Your Questions About Natural Remedies In Pregnancy

Chris asks…

Pregnancy and bacterial vaginosis.?

I have suffered with BV for almost two years now and I am becoming concerned about what effects this may have on my chances of pregnancy in the present or future. I have never been pregnant and have no children but would like at least one within the next 3-5 years. I have been given every medicine out there for BV and it keeps coming back. I have even tried natural remedies and nothing. I have been tested for everything under the sun and I am clean (so is my partner). I know the BV does strange things to my body during the month however I would like to know if it will effect my chances of conceiving in the future. I am healthy besides this. When I tell my doctor she is no help and neither are her colleagues because most do not know what even causes this. Are there any other women that have or are experiencing the same thing and have been successful in becoming pregnant?

Michelle answers:

Oh my god..finally..someone like me! LOL! I was a chronic sufferer of BV before this unplanned pregnancy. I am also clean as is my partner.

When it occurs have you previously had a lot of sex? I would always get it whenever my partner and I had sex everyday for 2 weeks or more. If we had sex less frequently I wouldn’t get it.

Someone once told me it is because the vagina is acidic and sperm is considered “basic” and will mess with the PH acidity levels in your vagina.

Once I got pregnant I got BV once more and it disappeared on its own. I have not gotten BV anymore in my 6-7 months of pregnancy even with frequent sex. It might be a pregnant thing.

My doc was not helpful prepregnancy with BV but did tell me to urinate and possibly even wash the area after sex and that seemed to help too.

This doesnt answer your question on conception but may help you in preventing it.

What is causing a sudden increase in heart palpitations and dizziness during my second trimester of pregnancy?

I have had infrequent heart palpitations for years. Just recently, these have increased to more than once a day and have included dizzy spells (once, I actually fainted). I am in my second trimester of pregnancy, my first trimester was uneventful (no palpitations, even). I eat healthy, have gained 10-15 lbs., exercise (not too heavily), try to stay hydrated, have a low pulse and a slightly lower than average blood pressure. I am more interested in natural remedies, but I would appreciate any knowledgeable or experienced advice. I am also receiving care from a midwife, no doctor.

Michelle answers:

One of the girls in my class had the same problem. She fainted in the shower and her doctor said that it was really no big deal it was just her body’s way of dealing with her pregnancy. Her doctor said it was because her body was trying to produce enough blood for her and the baby. She told her to drink lots and lots of water. When I say lots, her doc told her to drink at least 10 bottles a day. I don’t really know if this will help or not but I hope it does.

Lizzie asks…

Anything safe for depression during pregnancy?

I am 18 weeks pregnant and wondering if anyone out there has ever taken antidepressants while pregnant. I have suffered from postpartum depression in the past (after my second child was born) and was put on antidepressants for it then. I came off and have been doing relatively well until I got pregnant for a fourth time. I got pregnant when my third baby was only six months old, so I am not sure if it is a postpartum depression or possibly just a combination of postpartum and being pregnant again so quickly. I am very unsure as to what I can take in terms of antidepressants or natural remedies. I have heard that if I take antidepressants while pregnant my baby will have to go through withdrawal once her or she is born and I don’t think I want to do that to my baby, but at the same time right now I feel like I am losing it. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks so much.

Michelle answers:

Youve got a lack of Iron. Later pregnancies are especially difficult and if its your fourth, you’ll need a lot of nutrition. Dont mess with your health. Think of the baby. The fact that you’re depressed shows that the body is defecient in something. And if you’re thinking of resorting to drugs to treat the mind, dont be silly! You need omega 3, Iron and calcium. B, C. Get one of those multi vites. Exercise is very very important. Watch the weight also. You should not have gained more that 7kg in the first 5 months and a maximum of 11 kg at the point of giving birth. Do it for the child.

Worried about feeling unhinged and crazy during pregnancy.?

I am 20 weeks pregnant and have definately felt teary, sensitive and cranky so far, which dosent bother me because I can deal with that an apparantly it is ‘normal’. However this last week i have been feeling paranoid and really needy/insecure with my husband ( who is a beautiful big marshmallow very emotionally supportive) and I feel like Im thinking differently, like my mind has been affected by the hormones. Also a general joyless feeling and anxiety. I am terrified of being depressed as I struggled with this earlier in my life and overcome it. I dont want to take anti depressants again ( altho im not knocking them..they were what i needed at the time..i just dont want to put anything in my body now) but i am scared of basically myself ! As i said its just the last week ( which has been really stressful for me). Does anyone know any natural remedies or any advice? I dont want it to get worse but i dont want to be alarmist! thanks… 🙂

Michelle answers:

This is all so normal. Just keep in mind that what you’re feeling is pregnancy related, and will go away after you’ve had the baby (of course then, you might have to deal with post par tum depression… I never did though, so don’t get scared.) I have been having similar feelings this pregnancy, I keep having dreams that my husband is cheating on me, even though I know that would never happen, and just feeling really self conscious. I think the funniest time though, was when I started crying at the dinner table because I thought my nose was growing… You get weird during pregnancy, and later you’ll be able to laugh about it.

Good Luck:)
