Your Questions About Natural Pregnancy Test

Laura asks…

I am over week, have taken four pregnancy tests and all are showing up negative. Could I be pregnant?

I am now over a week late. I am never late; my periods are like clockwork. But, according to four pregnancy tests taken since I missed my period, I am not pregnant. I did take 2000mg of Zithromax for an infection a little over a week ago and am under a good bit of stress, but antiobiotics and stress have never affected my cycle before. I have two beautiful girls, both who were conceived the first month we tried. I also got a positive pregnancy test on both of them three to four days before I missed my period. My husband and I practice natural family planning. The hormones in birth control mess me up and the latex in condoms give me awful UTIs. Has anyone else been pregnant and received multiple negative pregnancy tests?

Michelle answers:

Did your NFP chart confirm ovulation at the regular time of your cycle? If you had illness and infection, even though they haven’t affected you in the past, you may have ovulated later than usual or even not at all. Antibiotics can definitely delay ovulation as well as confuse your NFP charting. You may have thought your cervical mucus dried up due to being post-ovulation, but that may have been due to the medicine and there might not have been any ovulation at all. Do you chart your temperatures as well? That would be a helpful cross-check at this point. But, like I said, if you had already confirmed ovulation before starting the medicine, then there are a couple of other scenarios.

First may be that yes, you are pregnant but you are not testing positive at home. Are you using first morning urine to test? I have a friend who didn’t test positive at home for over 2 weeks. Your doctor can definitely do a blood test and check for sure.

You may also have suffered from a LUFS cycle, which is a lutenized unruptured follicle cycle. The follicle gets very large but at the time of ovulation the egg does not burst out. However, the follicle still starts triggering progesterone and usually continues to produce progesterone for longer than your usual luteal (post-ovulation) phase. 18-21 days is the normal time from the LUFS to your next cycle, which is right where you are. Are you having any pain from your lower pelvis? A cyst is also possible, but if you aren’t having pain or any bloating/swelling then that is probably not as likely.

So the bottom line is, there is probably no rush on this unless it’s making you nuts. I would wait another 3-5 days and if you still haven’t gotten your period, do one last home pregnancy test and if it’s negative, contact your doctor and see if you need to come in for a blood test. Every woman has an off cycle, even a cycle with no ovulation, from time to time, so it’s not necessarily anything big to worry about. In the meantime, try to do some stress relief if you can! Hope everything resolves itself soon.

Maria asks…

How long should I wait to take a HPT after a miscarriage?

I have had one previous pregnancy that ended up fine. We were trying for our 2nd child for 9 months finally I had gotten pregnant then on 7/15/07 I had a natural miscarriage at 4 weeks along. On 7/24/07 my HCG levels were back down to 0 on August 5th I took a pregnancy test and it came out negative which I figured it would have but I haven’t gotten my period yet its been exactly 5 weeks so far I haven’t had any symptoms of getting my period and how long do you think it should take for my period to get back to normal or when should I take a HPT? Thank you all for the answers and advice and please no rude comments

Michelle answers:

I have miscarried too and you will probably not get pregnant OR have a period until you have a D&C. See, some of the placenta and other, sorry, dead cells are still in your uterous and need to be “cleaned” out. You really need to see your OB/GYN immediately. I don’t mean to scare you and you shouldn’t be, you just need to follow the next step so you can have many babies after. Hope this helps and good luck.

Michelle answers:

How late is your period? If it was me, I’d wait til it was 4-5 days late, then test. Sorry to hear about your MC, I really hope that this is your lucky month. Baby dust x
