Your Questions About Natural Pregnancy Products

Donald asks…

Has ANYONE used these products while pregnant? Safe? Effective?

I am pregnant with #3 and with all my pregnancies i’ve had HORRIBLE unimaginable acne on my face and chest. I recently heard of an all natural product called Burt’s Bees and i just bought it. The active ingredient is Salicylic Acid which is derived from Willow bark. Has anyone used this? Is is effective? Safe?

Any/all info will be appreciated.

Michelle answers:

Salicylic Acid is the chemical doctors dont recommend. (same as pro-activ, stridex etc)

i have clearasil oil-free daily face wash, it doesnt work as good as most acne medicines, but it helps and has no salicylic acid.

Sandra asks…

honey and pregnancy?

i have been a chef for 20 years and today i heard the most rediculous thing.”sorry,i cant have honey ,i am pregnant”
WHAT!!!!!Honey is one of natures most natural products and full of goodness. How the hell can it be bad for you, unless of course MAN has added some CRAP to that aswell.

Michelle answers:

The reason that this is advised is because honey can contain the botulinum spore that in the proper environment may cause the deadly food poisoning botulism. Acid will inhibit the spore from growing and producing the botulism toxin. A baby’s immature digestive system is not yet acidic enough to inhibit the toxin from being produced, whereas the digestive system of an older baby and adults is. In other words, the baby’s digestive tract provides a nice warm, air-free, low-acid environment where botulinum spores just love to grow. When it grows it will produce the toxin. The toxin produced by the spore is the danger.

A pregnant mom can safely eat honey. Her digestive tract is acidic, and will prevent a botulinum spore from growing — no toxin will be produced. There is no danger to the fetus from the mom-to-be eating honey or honey-containing foods.

James asks…

Are there ANY treatments you can use for Athletes foot whilst pregnant??

I have really annoying athletes foot and i can’t find any “over the counter” treatments suitable for use in pregnancy. I’m seeing my midwife tomorrow, but i’ve been browsing the internet and can’t find ANYTHING that i can use on it. Even all the natural products advise against using during pregnancy. I have tried washing frequently and even using salt foot soaks, but nothing seems to be working.

PLEASE HELP!!!
tea tree oil isn’t meant to be used in pregnancy…..

Michelle answers:

You can use anti-fungal creams while pregnant. Also try this: Soak your foot in a solution of 1 tsp. Salt to 1 quart of water. Soak 2-4 times a day for 10 minutes. Dry the foot thoroughly with a hair dryer, then apply anti-fungal cream (Lotrimin or clotrimazole). You may have to use a combination of both creams in order to get on top of it. Make sure you are wearing open shoes (like sandals) that expose the foot to as much air as possible….no socks either.
My son had a severe case of it, and this is what the pediatrician told us to do. I have seen great improvement when we do this treatment strictly.
