Your Questions About Natural Pregnancy Products

Daniel asks…

products during pregnany?

i decided thanks to all ur lovely feedback to use johnsons baby shampoo and baby soap (while im pregnant) my normal cleanser but no scrub or toner cos they both contain salacylic acid. instead decided to use cucumber juice as a toner and make my own natural scrub. and coco butter as a body lotion. NO DEODRANT can someone advise me on a conditioner that s safe and natural during pregnancy. has anyone heard of LUSH. they make alot of products. that are natural. they are probably safe?

Michelle answers:

Check out this website: www.cosmeticsdatabase.com

Someone posted in over in Newborn & Baby yesterday and it is awesome. It rates products on a safe scale of 0-9. I use the Johnsons products on my son and FREAKED out to find the are a 6 on the scale. They contain pthalates and parabens, which are dangerous chemicals. There has been a bunch of stuff in the news lately about them. So it is nice to find some safe products not only for you, but for your baby when they are born!

Good organic products to use during pregnancy?

I’ve found some decent shampoo and conditioner (Giovanni) and some natural almond soap that I use instead of bodywash and facewash but does anyone know of any other organic products that are actually good and don’t smell terrible? I’m having a hard time finding things that don’t smell like patchoulli or leave my hair looking like a broomstick.
I have heard of Weleda products but never tried them.
Thanks for the suggestions. I have tried Jason’s products. I have also tried burt’s bees and like some of their products (lotions, lip balm) but their hair products and soaps are not very good, in my opinion.
Also, their belly butter has a lot of vitamin A, as does Weleda’s belly cream. Not sure why they didn’t leave this out, as it seems to be quite controversial.
dcsavak- thanks for the skinorganics suggestion. never heard of them but I will check it out.

Michelle answers:

Weleda is good, and so are Jason and Tom’s of Maine. I love Burt’s Bees, and the smell is much milder than most natural stuff. For skin care, I love Skin Organics (www.skinorganics.com). Cheaper than department store stuff and far better.

Products of conception after natural miscarriage?

We got pregnant straight on our first month of ttc, started to spot on 5-6 week and finally was diagnosed with a missed miscarriage around 10th week of my pregnancy. I opted to take nature it course and finally miscarried on 31 jan 2011.I had to go to A&E coz of massive bleeding. They did u/s next day to say that womb is empty. But i am still showing + on HPT almost 10 days after miscarriage and very very nausea ed all the time long. no high temperature though. GP says I have no infection and sent me back with pack of antibiotics. I m still wondering if i do retain products of conception yet? If yes, what are the symptoms should I look for ?Since it is very hard to get line up again for u/s and see a doctor what should i do to confirm things?

Michelle answers:

It can take a little while for your HCG hormones to reach Zero. So the + is not surprising. This site explains the biology of it all. It helped me understand my bleeding/cycles after my miscarriages. Even though the ultrasound found nothing in your uterus, there still could be microscopic bits that just take a cycle to really flush out. They do a number on your hormone levels too.
I’m very sorry! Takes a bit of time to get over the heartache.

How careful should you be with your beauty routine during pregnancy?

HI all! I am freaking out a little bit here and could use some advice! A friend of mine recommended Arbonne products to me for use during pregnancy because they are advertised as being made from “all natural products.” I have been using a couple of different face creams from Arbonne because I thought it was safe. However, it just came to my attention that these products both contain retinal acetate and retinal palmitate. What amount, I am not sure. There are a lot of ingredients listed on a web page I found while researching. Oh my gosh!! I am in a panic! I know retinoids are to be avoided and I thought I was doing that, but come to find out these ingredients fall under that category. Have I done harm to my baby? I am 10 weeks pregnant. I only used the creams on my face. I have only been using them for a couple of weeks, and I didn’t use them every day. I used them every other day. Obviously now, I have stopped using them altogether. Please advise!! Thanks so much!!

Michelle answers:

There is no evidence that face creams effect an unborn baby. Your baby is fine.
