Your Questions About Natural Pregnancy Induction

Lizzie asks…

Mommies, did your doctor strip your membranes when you were pregnant?

I know this isn’t really in the correct section, but I asked in Pregnancy and only got two answers. I always get better answers here, hope you don’t mind. TIA!!

I’m 40 weeks today…YAY!!!!!!!! So, it’s finally here, but unfortunately baby’s not lol!! I have a doctor’s appointment today and I have a feeling the doc will try to schedule me for induction if I haven’t delivered by next week, especially since it’s so close to Christmas. I was induced with my first pregnancy (to fit the doctor’s schedule) and I REALLY don’t want to be induced this time. I know two or three people that had their membranes stripped and went in to labor the same day. I’ve been doing some research and it seems to be a more natural way to induce if your body is ready. At my appointment last week I was 1cm dilated and my cervix was soft but still thick and she could feel baby’s head. She didn’t give me percentages of effacement or a station or anything like that so sorry, I can’t give that info. It’s not a TON of progress, but it’s still something.

So, did your doctor strip your membranes? Were you dilated? Effaced?
Did it work for you?
If so, how long after they were striped did you go into labor?

Michelle answers:

I didn’t have my membranes stripped. I went into labor 5 days after my due date. My friend had hers stripped a couple days before her due date but was still 9 days late. It works for some people though. I would personally never do it unless I was very overdue, but I would definitely try that before being induced. Don’t let them induce you unless they absolutely have to. Too many inductions are done out of convenience, as you found out with your last baby. A normal pregnancy is 37-42 weeks so they should let you go that long as long as nothing is wrong with you or baby.

Betty asks…

Help!? I’m scared crazy!?

My due date was 11/11/11 (to bad it didn’t happen). Well I went in for an appointment that day and my doctor told me that she had already scheduled a day for me to be induced;in one week. This Friday at 7:00 am. First I was super excited, I’ve had an easy pregnancy besides the fact I’m carrying a baby in my tummy that is predicted to be well over 9 lbs. (that’s why i have to be educed). And my goal scene day one was to go all natural, no epidural and no pain killers what so ever. Also it’s really important that I’m not strapped down to the bed and have the freedom of movement and walking around. I go in at 7:00am tomorrow and really not sure of the procedure or what to expect. I know on the paper she gave me she said IV INDUCTION, so what is that? Am I going to be able to walk around? Will it be tolerable to have no epidural? I heard that getting induced is like 100 times more painful then going in naturally? Is the labor really going to go faster because of the induction?

Help me, I’m paranoid and freaked out;my stomach is curling! :/

Michelle answers:

The IV is for fluids. I, too, was induced because my baby was small, and i wasn’t growing. Theres nothing to be afraid of. You will def want the epidural! They say your baby is 9 pounds but usually they are wrong. Could be more, could be less. Who knows. If your pain tolerance is high then you MIGHT be able to go all natural. But i would esp, being induced those are usually very long labors. You can walk around until you get the epidural ( if you get it). Being induced is not painful. It just lasts longer. Usually when you get induced, they break your water for you, so prepare for a long labor.

My suggestion is you should get the epidural. And you will def want the pain killers after wards, The epidural is nothing to be scared about. Just be still, and it’ll be over within seconds. And it is well worth it. IF you do get the epidural don’t ask how they do it until after you get it lol.
P.S the medicine they give you to get labor going is done vaginally NOT thru an IV. IVs are for fluids!
Just try to calm down, every thing will be fine. 🙂

Good luck 🙂

Steven asks…

Need to induce labor at 36 weeks 3 days, please what can I do?

Please don’t be negative I know my body and I have really done everything in my power to carry this baby up to now. Was in hospital at 34 weeks with chickenpox. I am very uncomfortable and in pain and I have a family as well as 9 little newborn puppies to look after. I am at the end of the rope! My first pregnancy I carried till 34 weeks, I was induced in hospital and had a painful natural birth but my baby was born healthy at 2869g. My gynie said that this baby has matured enough and he expects it any time from 36 weeks. What can I do, have tried sex, Castor oil and nipple stimulation. I get contractions but nothing further, don’t want another hospital induction and must go to gynie again tomorrow. Scared, and I know my baby is ready.

Michelle answers:

If you have tried all of that, I would say your baby is not ready. I would wait untill 38 weeks to be sure your baby’s lungs are mature, because if they are not, you will be even more stressed out, besides, having the baby inside is much easier than once it is born! You will not sleep for the next 4 weeks!

I suggest you go to your appointment and talk to your ob, because if you haven’t dialated at all from those methods, I think your laborer is still far off, even with pitocin, if your body is not ready you will just end up a satistic of a failed indution unnecesarry c-section. . But then again you gointo labor on your own tomorrow.

Michelle answers:

I can honestly say that my baby is now 3 weeks old i carried him 40.5 weeks, and at 34 weeks i started trying all the things you did, and nothing worked….NOTHING i completely understand how you are feeling, but honestly i would tell your DOC how much pain you are in, cause i did and thats how i got scheduled to be induced at 40.6 weeks but i guess the thought of the induction scared my baby out that night! So really good luck, but i just wanted to tell you the honest truth, if the baby does not want to come then theres nothing you can do about it! But if you go into the office crying saying you cant sleep and have not ate in days, and that you are really depressed then they CAN do and induction no matter what they say, my doc said no at first, the i did this, and suddenly his answer changed! Good luck!
