Your Questions About Natural Pregnancy Induction

Sandra asks…

lost plug. no bloody show and no discharge?

a day after my last Dr. appointment I took a shower and noticed discharge when i dried myself. i couldn’t tell if it was colored due to the color of the towel.. was this my mucous plug or just regular discharge? i’m 38 weeks pregnant and for the whole pregnancy have not had any type of discharge that’s why i think it’s my plug. oh and since this appointment i haven’t had much contractions or BH like i did before the visit. just the normal back ache and contractions during the night. nothing but regular BH during the day.. I’m trying to have a VBAC and have been trying natural methods to get my body ready for when he comes…

thanks for all your responses..

ALSO PLEASE DO NOT TELL ME NOT TO TRY NATURAL LABOR INDUCTION. if you’re not personally living in my shoes please don’t tell me why you wouldn’t do something that i’m doing.. i just need to know if i’m the only one out there who’s experiencing what i am with the lost plug but no discharge. that’s all….

Thanks

Michelle answers:

Ok was it a lot cause when i lost mine it was the size of a table spoon (but it is different for everyone) also if it was only a small amount it could be breaking away
next time try if your using a coloured towel get something white and take it off it and have a good look at it if its pinky in colour or creamy with a bit of blood or even slightly brown well then it would be your plug

well i wish you all the best in your vbac and i hope it all goes to plan for u

Ruth asks…

I don’t know what else to do?

People say that stimulating your nipples can help induce labor? Would pumping milk during pregnancy be considered a stimulant or can I harm myself or the baby by doing this? Im 41 weeks pregnant and the doctor is planning to induce me this wednesday, I really just want to have a natural labor without induction, also, my doctor sweeped my membranes yesterday and all I had since then was cramping and no contractions. I’ve tried everything and nothing worked, can someone please give me some advice, anything would help at the moment.

Michelle answers:

Have sex, go walking, laugh, scream, do anything that causes you to have an extreme emotion(hell do your taxes) nipple stimulation isn’t a bad idea.

Chris asks…

Dr. stripped my membranes..NOW WHAT?!!!!!! Nurses? Dr.’s?

The Dr. stripped my membranes yesterday and I have been losing my mucus plug (clear snotlike) all day. I’m 2 cm and 50% effaced. I’ve been having lots of braxton hicks. Some painful, but not breath taking. Does this mean that the stripping is working? What should I look for next…contractions…..bloody show? How soon?

This is my second pregnancy. First one was an elective induction. Not sure what natural labor feels like or what do look for next. Help if you can

Michelle answers:

Hi! I am now 31 weeks pregnant with my second child and I understand how your feeling. First of all, the above answerers are right that active labor will start to pick up when your body is ready for it. Unless you are having any problems like continual bleeding or something uncommon, then you’ll have to wait it out.

I know it sounds horrible and probably isn’t the answer your looking for because I was totally ready to have my daughter the first time around. I felt miserable having to wait around with all the intense pressure, feeling exhausted, and just generally sick and waiting for her to come out! Its the worst and also your hormones and emotional state is affected by it so you’ll keep tormenting yourself with questions about is this normal and NO I don’t really feel it’s normal!!! But trust me it is and when your baby is ready (he/she will be here VERY soon) then your next step will be to focus on recovery and overcome the new mother syndrome that will definitely follow. So my best advice to you is to try and keep yourself as comfortable as possible and busy yourself with whatever you can (a book or watching TV). It will happen soon!!!! Also try to rest as much as possible and save your energy for when you’ll really need it. Take care of yourself and God bless you and your little one.

Jenny asks…

31 weeks pregnant, having pains, dr talking about inducing, please I NEED advice.?

I am just getting over a UTI, went to the hospital while trying to get over the UTI had contractions they gave me a shot to stop the contractions. I have been having pains, or tightening feelings in my stomach. They dont feel like the conrtactions I was having in the hospital, are they Braxton Hicks or…what could they be? My doctor is talking about inducing me at 38 weeks because my blood pressure is steadily rising and i have a high risk of developing toxima (spelling?). Should her lungs be developed well enough to deliver then. (My doctor said he would keep and eye on her and run some tests before any plans were set in stone, but just on average are the lungs mature at that time). Is Induction more painful than natural labor? And my baby weighed 3.1 lbs at 28 weeks, how much weight do babies normally gain per week on average from now until full term (40 weeks)? Also one last question, my baby has had her head down the entire pregnancy, when does the doctor start checking the babies position, like when does it matter that her head is down? And with inductions I keep hearing that alot of them end in c-section, is that true????

Michelle answers:

38 weeks is full term, usually a baby’s lungs are mature by 36 weeks and sometimes earlier. Average weight of a fetus at 28 weeks is about 2lbs 4oz, so I wouldn’t worry about low birth weight if you deliver at 38 weeks. What you described does sound like braxton hicks contractions, they are normal. My doctor told me that they start to think about the baby’s position for birth around 37 weeks because they should move head down naturally at 37-38 weeks to prepare for birth (so far my son is still transverse, so I made sure to ask) The research I’ve done basically indicated that Pitocin (the drug they use to induce labor) causes the uterus to contract harder than it would naturally, speeding up the labor process but also making it more painful. So, most women who are given Pitocin end up requesting an epidural. The epidural ends up slowing the labor back down and making it much harder to push effectively because you don’t have as much feeling or muscle control, and that increases your chances for needing a c-section. Pitocin can also make you contract so hard that the baby and umbilical cord get squished with each contraction, and that can lead to needing a c-section. I don’t mean to scare you, I just want to pass along the info i gathered since you asked. It sounds like your blood pressure is enough of a concern that it is worth the extra c-section risk to make sure you and the baby are okay. Best of luck 🙂
