Maria asks…
How do you feel about your children reading mature books in High school?
Well today for homework were supposed to pick a book off a list for a project.Well i decided to look up some of the books and heres a quote:
Recreational heterosexual and homosexual sex is an integral part of society. In this egalitarian society, everyone is treated equally. According to The World State, sex is a social activity rather than a means of reproduction and is encouraged from early childhood; the few women who can reproduce are conditioned to take birth control. The maxim “everyone belongs to everyone else” is repeated often, and the idea of a “family” is considered taboo; sexual competition and emotional, romantic relationships are rendered obsolete because they are no longer needed. Marriage, natural birth, parenthood, and pregnancy are considered too obscene to be mentioned in casual conversation. Thus, society has advanced to a new level of reproductive comprehension.
Personally i could take it because im not immature but im wondering how would you feel about your teen reading a book like this?
Hey the name of the book is
Brave New World
I just put that quote so you would know the kind of views and could understand what i was talking about.
It wasnt shocking at all to be honest because it basically true.
Michelle answers:
I would encourage it if the book is well written. I believe I’ve read the book you’re talking about. There’s a difference between reading a book that’s pornographic for the sake of being pornographic and reading a book that discusses how society handles sex (in this case it’s hypothetical). Let’s face it, pornography has become a cultural norm. (I.e. Most parents don’t seem to care if their kids have access to it.) The media is hypersexualized. There’s very little real discussion of the role of sex within society. That’s why I disagree with allowing access to pornography and I disagree with how the media presents things, while at the same time promoting reading these types of books. We need dialogue and discussion, not a follower mentality.
Once a child reaches the age of 12 or 13, it’s important to give them things that engage their critical thinking skills concerning ethics and society.

Charles asks…
What do people when they say our kids need better sex education?
When I was kid, we learned these things in sex ed in grade school I believe:
– Pregnancy is the natural result of having sex.
– You can get STDs from sex.
– Condoms, when used properly, greatly reduce the chance of becoming pregnant and diminish the chance of contracting certain STDs, and prevent others.
– Birth control pills, spermicides, etc. are available to lessen the chance of pregnancy.
– “Pulling out” is risky and stupid.
– There are morning after pills you can take.
– The only way to 100% guarantee you will not become pregnant is to not have sex or get yourself sterilized, or have a partner who has been sterilized.

So, my question is what else do people think kids need to learn in school? If that isn’t enough for a kid, then, IMO, that kid is a dumbass and I’m not sure additional education would even help. What else do the kids need? And if parents are worried that their kids are not getting enough sex education, why don’t they teach them themselves or buy them a book about it?
What I learned seemed enough. I never got knocked up like a moron, and all my male peers knew what condoms were.
Are they teaching kids differently today, or are kids just more stupid/lazy and don’t care?
@Twimmie
“I graduated in 2006 and all we learned was abstience is the only safe method to prevent pregnancy and stds,”
It is the safest method. No lies here. No one who practices abstinence gets pregnant. 😉
“we were taught pulling out is stuid and risky, condoms are very likey to break and will not prevent some stds,”
Pulling out is stupid and risky. Condoms can break and do not always prevent you from getting some STDs. While I disagree that condoms are “very likely” to break, they can.
“and we didn’t even cover other types of birth control. It’s no wonder I got pregnant at 15”
No one prevented you from picking up a book or using Google in case you weren’t sure about something. You were free to ask your parents about birth control. If they didn’t let you have it and you had sex anyway and got pregnant, that is still your fault. No one forced you to spread your legs, don’t blame others for your stupidity. Unless you were raped, its YOUR fault you got pregnant
I thought showing kids what it is like to have to care for a kid would help with stuff, but now that minors can get abortions without parental consent, it wouldn’t help since if they get pregnant they can just abort.
I guess I just don’t understand why parents are not teaching their children about sex if its such a big issue.
If I felt my kid wasn’t learning enough about math, I wouldn’t just let them continue learning nothing and bitch to the school about it. I’d teach them about math on my own time.
Michelle answers:
We are limited to what we can teach, and many parents don’t want their kids to participate in Sex Ed classes.
On the one hand we are told that we don’t have enough Sex Ed in School and at other times we have Parents complaning that there is too much.
Us teachers have to try and find a balance that suits everyone, which is really difficult.

Paul asks…
Question for people who oppose gay marriage for religious reasons..?
Here is a hypothetical scenario for you:
In a world far away from this one, called Khaosi, being gay is actually the norm, whereas heterosexuality is seen as “abnormal”. And by some people, it is even seen as “disgusting”..
Everybody is supposed to fall in love with people of the same gender. Natural, unplanned pregnancies are considered “barbaric” by the vast majority. Kids are created in laboratories instead, or women get inseminated, if indeed they want that. (Which most don’t.)
In Khaosi, the majority of the people are theists. They have a goddess called Adriliana, who they worship seven times a day. Adriliana has, supposedly, left them a book 5000 years ago, which she wrote herself before she burst into flames and ascended up into heaven, never to be heard from again.. This book, which is called The Adrilia, is NOT updated as time passes by. And no matter how absurd it might sound to you, some people actually take it 100 % literally and base their lives around it..
There has been debates in Khaosi lately, about whether or not straight people should be able to marry, and should be treated as regular human beings.. Straight people are in support of the idea, of course. And so are their friends, families and allies. Others have not yet decided where they stand on this issue.
But the followers of Adriliana, who are in the majority, are virulently opposed to the idea! Why..? Because in The Adrilia, Chapter 98, verse 976, it says this:
“Heterosexuals are wretched, immoral people, and they are to be treated as such. In the name of our one and only goddess Adriliana, they are NOT to be given any rights, and they deserve whatever persecution they get.”
Adriliana’s followers actually choose NOT to question this rule!! It is in the Adrilia, and that is enough for them. Even though no one has ANY evidence of Adriliana actually existing..
Some of the heterosexuals, and also people from the vast homosexual majority, are atheists. They don’t believe in Adriliana, or in any other gods for that matter, and they cannot for the life of them fathom why the Adrilia should be accepted in society, and even used as a tool to discriminate others solely based on religion!
So now I just want to ask:
Can you? Can YOU understand it?! If you were a heterosexual person living in Khaosi, would you put up with this?!?!? No matter if you believed in Adriliana or not, can you seriously say you would think people should follow the Adrilia blindly, and use it to deny you your basic human rights?! Why? Why not? Please explain to me….
Michelle answers:
Marriage is about love, and love was Jesus primary message. I think it would be cruel of God to make a person homosexual so they fall in love with someone of the same sex, and then say that if they deny that love, they will burn in Hell.
No, God doesn’t care who another person marries, as long as there is love.
And to you guys who are against same-sex marriage? If its legalized, it doesn’t mean you are required to marry someone of the same gender.
