Your Questions About Natural Pregnancy After 50

Susan asks…

I used eucalyptus and peppermint in pregnancy?

My wife is 4 weeks pregnant. Yesterday she was having lower back pains and she asked me to massage her. We found online that massage with eucalyptus oil is good for back pain. We thought it’s natural so let’s do it. We have something called Olbas Oil at home. That’s a brand name. In it there’s 50% peppermint oil, 25% eucalyptus oil, and 25% cajeput oil. It can be used for colds and for massage. So I applied it to my wife on her lower back. She said it feels great. It causes a warmth. So I applied more and it ended up being quite a lot. After 10 minutes she said the burning sensation is too much and worried if this kind of heat is bad for pregnancy. She said the heat feeling was all over her torso. So we looked up eucalyptus oil and pregnancy. (Before we had only looked up back pain and eucalyptus oil.) We got scared to see that it is something to definitely stay away from in pregnancy. Ingesting, massaging, and inhaling are not recommended. From what I read, these “essential oils” can induce cramps, menstruation, and labour. Eucalyptus oil is also toxic. So there is concern that while the adult mother can handle the toxicity, the fetus can’t. We got really worried and my wife jumped into the shower and washed it all off. After the shower she felt much better.
She didn’t get any cramps, thank God. So we are not worried about the contraction-stimulating effects anymore, because it just didn’t happen and we will avoid the oil in the future. But we are worried about any effects that we can’t observe. What if there were some toxic side effects to the baby?

Michelle answers:

You are right that it is highly toxic. It’s toxic to babies and adults and not recommended for use in pregnancy. However it is mostly only a risk if it is ingested. There is a small risk from using it on the skin but it isn’t something you should let worry you. She washed it off and hopefully didn’t ingest any. The heat it caused wouldn’t be any kind of risk. Just keep an eye on her and if she feels fine then baby should be fine too. If however she does start to get cramps or feel ill then it’s best to speak to your GP. Even then period like cramps are normal in early pregnancy so you still shouldn’t panic.

Why don’t more women do a natural child birth?

My girlfriend is entering her third trimester and we have been doing months of research into the best delivery methods and found that going 100% natural is the best way to deliver the baby for both mom and the baby. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, which is part of the Department of Health and Human Services, over 25% of all U.S. births have been accomplished by Caesarean section, and roughly 50% of those where unnecessary. As well as Episiotomies are done about 90% of the time, and they are only necessary less than 1% of the time. Why are women subjecting their bodies to this kind of mutilation?

Also, women are told encouraged to stay away from drugs throughout the coarse of the pregnancy, but once the contractions start, there aren’t enough drugs we can pump into them. Research shows that within seconds of the mother receiving these drugs, the baby has them as well. These drugs have shown to cause depression of fetal breathing and decreased responsiveness in newborns. The babies are less alert and less vigorous in nursing, and these drugs have been detected in babies weeks after birth. Also, the women I’ve spoken to, or read about, who had the drugs and C-sections and/or other “current medical assistance” with their birth said it was the most painful event in their lives, and moms that had natural childbirths describe their experiences as “beautiful”, “memorable”, “incredible”, or some kind of positive comment. Let’s say that at the time of delivery you are 175lbs, and your baby is born at roughly 7lbs. You are 25 times the size of your baby. Any drug that is given to you is dozed for your size and body mass. That dosage is 25 times larger to your infant unborn baby while it is still inside of you!
I know the dosage is much smaller once it does get to the baby, but it is still an overdose to the child. I am not suggesting in taking away a womens right to decide, that’s up to her, she is the one who has to go through this experience. I am not trying to offend anyone, I’m only asking why aren’t more women getting educated on all the options, and just falling back on their doctor to pump them full of drugs and cut them open like a turkey and pull out the baby? (Sorry for the analogy). For countless centuries women did births naturally, when we did we as humans decide that nature didn’t work anymore? I understand that complications happen and thank god for doctors. I’m only asking here ladies, I’m not preaching anything.

Michelle answers:

Would you believe, one of the main reasons is peer pressure? None of their friends had natural birth, so they don’t want to be considered odd. Also, a lot of hospitals strongly discourage or don’t even allow natural birth so the baby has to be born in a birth center or at home. I had four natural births using the Bradley method and I don’t know anyone locally who had a completely natural birth. I had to really hunt for a doctor who was in favor of natural birth and supported my wishes. My babies were born in the birth center because the hospitals around here will not even admit you unless you agree to having the electronic fetal monitor. I never had it. I did not want it because of the risks involved. The electronic fetal monitor is statistically shown not to decrease the infant mortality rate, but it triples the c-sec rate. A feta scope is just as reliable and does not give false alarms.

TTC #1 with PCOS.. Any assurance?

My boyfriend and I have been together for four years, and we are trying to conceive our first. Last year around January I was told that I had PCOS, but I brushed it off thinking it was just a fancy name for whatever insignificant thing it was that has caused me to go 9 months without a period. I was prescribed provera for 10 days and then told to start Desogen, which was my birth control pill I had taken up until July 09. Ive had a period every month, not exactly like clockwork but they were anywhere from 28 days apart to the last which was 46 days. Last month I almost swore I was pregnant, I felt ill just thinking about food, my period was late, I felt bloated, dizzy and tired. Then I started experiencing what I thought was implantation bleeding as it was just brown discharge which isnt normal for me, so I scheduled an apt where I took a pregnancy test and it was negative. I had taken 2 prior to the apt with morning urine and of course they were negative so I was really hoping that it was just too soon. The brown discharge lasted for about 6 days with only very slight traces of actual blood. Ive been taking b6 b12 and folic acid. Ive spent rediculous amounts of money on ovulation tests , a bbt thermometer and pregnancy tests. I know that I need to slow down and calm myself, but ever since reading up on pcos, ive been frantic, afraid that I wont be able to concieve. I figured out that when you have pcos sometimes you do not ovulate, which is why I spent 50 bucks on a pack of o.p.k’s. Well, the morning after I purchased them, I tested my urine and it came back positive, well i was ECSTATIC! I nearly fainted. I did my research and according to my findings, women with pcos often get false positives from the opks! I was pissed for the lack of a better word.

I have an apt thursday with an ob/gyn and Im nervous. Ive been going to the same doc since I was 16. I dont know what to say or ask. I know that clomid and metformin are often prescribed for women who cannot ovulate. They told me on the phone that they would run some tests to see what the problem is. I informed them that the clinic i was using told me I had pcos. What kind of test will they run? Is it possible that they could prescribe me either of these medicines on my first visit? I dont want to spend most of my pregnancy in a doctors office is why I am asking. I am very interested in natural pregnancies but the chances of myself conceiving without a little help look a little slim. Does anyone have any info that will ease my spastic behavior? Thanks!

Michelle answers:

Hello Dear,

I can understand that you would be very anxious under those circumstances, really wanting to conceive, and being nervous with what you have been reading about PCOS.

I have a very close friend who conceived two beautiful children through the use of gonadotrophins. She has PCOS. I hope that I can offer some suggestions that might help calm your nerves about your doctor’s visit, based on her experience, and also my own experience with infertility.

First of all, I can think of some things that are really in your favor for conceiving:

1) You have a good sense of what the problem is in why you are not getting pregnant. For many people they don’t know why they aren’t conceiving and because of that it’s very difficult to come up with solutions to help them.

2) There are some very effective medical treatments for PCOS. The published ovulation rate for women with PCOS on Clomid is 46%, 76% when combined with metformin and 95% with gonadoptrophins! There are other treatments as well, if these don’t work.

3) You are taking action by becoming informed and doing things like taking your b vitamins and folic acid (smart choices!) Your own passion to find ways to be effective in conceiving will help you be a good team with your doctors in finding the best treatment for you.

Now, a few words about your appointment…

1) I’m not sure what tests they will give you, but I’m guessing it will probably be blood tests to measure your levels of LH and FSH to see if you are ovulating.

2) I don’t think that they will prescribe any medicines for you on your first visit because they will probably want to wait to see the results of your tests.

3) I’m hearing you don’t want to spend most of your pregnancy at the doctor’s office and that is very understandable. You may need to go frequently until you conceive, but once you are pregnant and through the first trimester, your visits will likely slow down, as long as everything is on track.

4) What to ask the doctor? My suggestion would be to get clear about what you want. It sounds like you really want to conceive. And I think your best chance to do that is through medical treatment, because although some people do conceive naturally with PCOS, it is much much harder. So, if it were me, I would be clear that I want to get a treatment for PCOS as soon as possible to help me conceive. That would be what I would tell my doctor.

I hope that there may have been something about any of this that might help calm your nerves. Overcoming infertility is definitely a journey. When you finally hold your baby in your arms and look into their eyes, they will know that they were really really wanted.

This comes with a huge hug…
