Your Questions About Natural Ivf

Ruth asks…

*How* exactly could a women still get pregnant after a full hysterectomy?

I know there must be someone with some medical expertise who can explain just how you can still get pregnant and carry a child without either a uterus or ovaries.I made an offhand remark about the “Octomom” after reading how she “hates her children and wishes she hadn’t had them”,I simply stated that she probably should have been sterilized(had a full hysterectomy, which would be about the most effective form of sterilization). The folks I was discussing this with were saying far worse things than that, but my one remark got me labeled a Nazi, and a couple of folks started ranting about how she could have still got pregnant with no uterus and no ovaries.I know all kinds of weird things can happen with the human body, but no ovaries means no eggs,so a natural pregnancy would pretty much seem impossible. And even with IVF,where exactly would the embryo develop? Are there any known cases where a child developed in some other part of the body when no uterus, ovaries,or fallopian tubes are present?Someone please enlighten me,if it’s possible for this to happen, then I stand corrected.

Michelle answers:

Not possible. The people you were talking to were idiots. It IS possible to get pregnant, via IVF and hormone therapy, if you have no ovaries. The hormone therapy prepares the uterus for pregnancy and maintains the pregnancy for 3 months. The IVF supplies eggs from someone else and the fertilized egg implants in the uterus after docs put it there. After 3 months, the placenta is developed and produces all the hormones necessary to maintain the pregnancy so it isn’t even necessary for the mother to take artificial hormones.

It’s not possible to be pregnant without a uterus. Technically, there are a few very rare cases in which a woman has gotten pregnant and when the egg leaves the fallopian tube, goes out into the abdominal cavity and misses the path into the uterus, and then implants in the abdominal cavity on an organ. This is called an abdominal pregnancy. There have been some successful abdominal pregnancies, though they are rare and the woman needs special support to prevent miscarriage or bleeding to death, and she must have the baby surgically removed. No doctor would ever attempt to do IVF and then put the egg into the abdomen to see if it would grow there because it’s far too dangerous and completely unethical.

That’s a tricky one, not sure. Just wondering why you cannot have a baby if she can’t? I guess that is the decision you have come to, but I just thought that IVf lead to more health probles for mother and baby? Plus the cost wow

I recommend that you both see your doctor (together), explain the situation and then both get the relevant tests.
