David asks…

what are some fun activities for a ninth grade algebra family fun night?

I am a student teacher at a school for ninth graders from low income families. Parents and children can be uninvolved in their education enough as it is, so the math department is having a family fun night close to Halloween. I already have a couple of ideas for activities, like having a jar of Halloween candy and having people estimate how many pieces are in the jar. I was just wondering if anyone had some other really great, affordable activities to get these kiddos excited about math!

Michelle answers:

You could try these sites :
www.onlinemathlearning.com/grade-9.html
cemc2.math.uwaterloo.ca/wired_math/english/grade9/index.html
olc.spsd.sk.ca/de/PD/MathSites.htm
www.funbrain.com/cgi-bin/getskill.cgi?A1=gba&A2=9&A7=0
wiredmath.ca/

You could have them Create their own algebraic equations pertaining to social activities, relationships, emotions, daily chores, etc. Eg. Loneliness/2 = good companionship .
Or for some household chores – how if every member chips in, the workload will decrease proportionately, ….
You can give them some prompts [love, happiness, friendship, buying groceries, films rented every week, books read by family every week, ….] & then let each group come up with equations. After the first round, the group that wins gets to ask their Own prompt & so on.

Here are some fun facts about math. You can use these to liven up the gathering too, especially the tricks :
http://www.google.co.in/search?client=opera&rls=en&q=fun+facts+about+math&sourceid=opera&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&channel=suggest

Have each group come up with ideas of Where/when/how, in their daily life, they make use of maths. Sometimes without actually realising it! Eg. Recipes [proportion], budget, knitting/crochet, weighing scale, calories, while buying bed/table linen [area or length & breadth], telling time, framing a picture, & so on.

Hope these help
Have fun 🙂

I get bored on the computer often! Help me out please!

Michelle answers:

A good website for kids to play on is funbrain.com

Steven asks…

Does anyone know of any good game websites?

I am trying to find some good game websites that my school has not already blocked.
Almost everything with “game” in it is blocked. They have also blocked the most poopular websites such as addictingames, miniclip, yahoo, yahookids. They block everything!
And what’s a proxy?

Michelle answers:

Www.addictinggame.com , www.miniclip.com , www.funbrain.com , www.bumarcade.com and www.mostfungames.com .

If that fails just put in the word “games” in google.
