Your Questions About Funbrain

Robert asks…

What’s the best way to teach basic math facts?

My daughter is going into 5th grade and I wanted to use this summer break to help her make some progress in her math facts. I have been quizzing her with flashcards a few times a day, but I need some ideas for some more variety. Anyone have any suggestions?

Michelle answers:

Besides just flashcards, you should try to make maths Fun for her so that she enjoys it & looks forward to it. She will also learn & retain more if she enjoys it. So you are absolutely right about bringing in variety.

Try to make it as interactive as possible – create problems together. Let her ask some Qs to which You will provide answers. Making up Qs helps the child understand the concept better. It also gives her relief & a sense of equality/achievement when she is not Always at the answering end. It will also provide you feedback as to the areas that may require more work.

During your household chores, or visits to the supermarket, etc., try to bring in maths problems that relate to daily life. This will bring in a practical application as well as relevance & won’t seem too boring or textual.

While baking a cake, teach her about proportions.
While shopping, teach her about discounts, etc.
While doing the laundry, measure the amount of detergent you are using, the total amount in the box & ask how long it will last or how many washes will you get out of one box.
Prepare a graph out of the daily weather forecast / temps, sun or moon rise/sunset timings, etc.
And so on.

Create crosswords using mathematical equations as clues. Solution to the clues will give her the answers to the crossword.

Use colors, toys, strings, pebbles, beads, etc. To make it more enjoyable. You can use these in place of mathematical symbols or any other way you like.

Thomas asks…

Where can I find info about classes and tutorials for elementary home school students?

We are looking into homeschooling, and would like information about classes/tutorials/activities available for homeschoolers K-4.

Michelle answers:

Are you asking for Kdg-4th grade or 4 yr old Kdg?

If your state has a virtual public school option, look into using K12 through the school district. Or, if you don’t want to go with a public school, you can use K12 on your own as an independent HS’er.

John asks…

Do you have any ideas for science and social studies curriculum for pre-k and k?

I’m hoping to find printables and good websites with free worksheets, coloring pages, etc. dealing with science and social studies. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to teach these topics and what I should start with? My children are 4 and 6 and my 6 y.o. is more like kindergarten/first grade. Any help would be appreciated.
I’ve been looking it up for awhile now. I’m hoping someone has personal experience with a website or something I’m missing.

Michelle answers:

I know this list is going to be very long, however social studies includes just about everything these day’s, and is a catch all name for multiple subjects.
These subjects can be done successfully in unit studies.

Hope these will be of some help to you.

This site does require a $20.00 yearly fee to have full use of all their printable materials, but it is well worth it.
You can check them out for free, but it is a lot of curriculum in one place.
