Your Questions About Firefox

Nancy asks…

How do I make my Firefox to open faster?

I have a problem with my Mozilla Firefox internet explorer. Whenever I click on it sometimes around 8 minutes or so, it will open. And trust me, I delete all the unnecessary files or folders on my drive so not to make the computer slow.

And sometimes the firefox won’t open (clicked twice or thrice) unless I switch the computer off completely than on it again. Is there something that i could make my firefox open more faster?

Michelle answers:

Use a windows feature called prefetching…

This puts the program in a memory cache so it loads faster

basically what you do is right click the shortcut for firefox, click properties, then add some text to the shortcut directory…

Does seem to help…

How do I know a particular Firefox add on is a malware or not?

Is there any way to confirm whether a particular add on for Firefox is a malware or not? How to figure out that? I want to install adblock Plus and noscript add ons but before that can anybody please help me clarify my doubt?

Michelle answers:

Mozilla (Firefox’s creators) review most add-ons, and will remove them immediately if there’s any threat to privacy or security. You’ll see on the add-on’s page if it hasn’t been reviewed, and both Ad-Block and Noscript have been reviewed. I use Ad-Block myself, and it hasn’t done anything suspicious in the entire time I’ve used it.

David asks…

Is there a good way to make some website shortcuts open in firefox and some in IE when Firefox is my default?

I’d like to keep Firefox as my default, but there are certain sites (such as Microsoft Partner) that only run on IE. If I could make a shortcut on my desktop for each of the sites like this and have it use IE when I click instead of Firefox, that would be perfect – or if I could make it ask which browser I want. Thanks.

Michelle answers:

There is an add-on for Firefox here: http://ieview.mozdev.org/ called IEview. Once installed in Firefox, it places an icon on the status bar. If you left-click on that icon, it switches the rendering engine of the current page to IE. You can set options for individual sites to “always view this page in IE.” The only problem I’ve had is for sites that require a log-in, if you’re logged in through Firefox, if you switch to IE, you’ll go to a log-in page. If you log in in IE, Yahoo, for example, will log you out of Firefox. It’s not perfect, but better (for me) than filling up my desktop with shortcuts.

How do I import bookmarks from mozilla firefox to the yahoo bookmarks?

When I have my firefox browser open and I click on import, the only option that is there is to import from Explorer. I don’t get it.

Michelle answers:

Import means to bring in. When you are clicking Import in Firefox you are trying to bring in bookmarks, Internet Explorer is the only other thing on your computer with bookmarks so it tries to Import them from there.

To get your Firefox bookmarks into your Yahoo! Bookmarks you need to first EXport them. At the top of a Firefox window click Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks, then click the “Import and Backup” button at the top of the new window followed by “Export HTML…” Save the file to your desktop so it’s easy to find.

Next log in to your Yahoo! Bookmarks at http://bookmarks.yahoo.com Once you’re in click the “Tools” link at top right then click the “Import Bookmarks” link. You’ve already done Step 1 so go to Step 2 and browse for the bookmarks.html file you just saved to your desktop. After that, in Step 3 select the Y! Bookmarks folder in which you wish to save all your bookmarks (if any), then click the Import button.

When the upload is done all of your Firefox bookmarks will now be in your Yahoo! Bookmarks.
