Chris asks…
How to use fafsa money for school?
Im starting college next week and I need to buy some books. But I dont know how to buy the books with the fafsa money. The books are really expensive. Also is there places where I can buy the books cheaper than at school?
Michelle answers:
There is no such thing as FAFSA money. The FAFSA is just a federal form that is used by schools to base any financial aid. The money comes from each individual school, or state grants, loans etc.
Did you get an award letter (print or online) for financial aid from your college? They probably have a place on their website for your account, with a page for financial aid.
You can buy books used at the college book stores, or if you have time, online. Ecampus, amazon, etc.
If you have financial aid at your school you will buy the books in their bookstore and the money will probably just come out of an account, not actual cash you will have.
James asks…
What do I do about the FAFSA if my household income changes?
If my father lost his job, he wouldn’t be able to pay the expected family contribution towards my tuition. There doesn’t seem to be a way to inform of job loss on the FAFSA either. What would be done in a situation like that?
Michelle answers:
Fafsa goes off the previous years income, so there is no reason to “go back and correct it” as others are suggesting. This would not help you. If your dad does have a recent job layoff, you will still have to fill out a fafsa (using his 2008 income info off his taxes). Then I would contact your schools fin aid office and tell them you have unusual circumstances you need to discuss. Take a copy of dads layoff letter with you. They will ask for more paperwork.
Sometimes doing this makes a big difference in how much aid you get, sometimes it doesn’t. (like if you have another parent in the household who makes a great deal of money and hasn’t been laid off).
Charles asks…
I misspelled my name in my fafsa application would that be problem for my college?
I misspelled my name, I have too and so I left the dash out and placed a space, and i did not notice until the deadline for the fafsa application deadline passed for my college. Also in my college application it appears with a dash. Unlike my fafsa application. Thanks for taking the time to help me.
Michelle answers:
Usually on your FAFSA account you have the option to make corrections. If not then call your financial aid office.
Daniel asks…
How can you tell if my FAFSA is approved?
I filled out the fafsa so I can go to school, when I check the status it just says processed. Does that mean its approved? How will I know if its approved or denied? I just filled it out a few days ago..not sure how long its supposed to tak eiether.
Michelle answers:
Your FAFSA is neither approved nor denied, it is simply processed. After being processed it’s sent to the schools you’ve listed and they decide based on your EFC number from your FAFSA if and how much aid you receive. A processed FAFSA does not mean you will be getting aid, it just means it does not appear that there is any missing information that needs to be corrected.
