Richard asks…
How would I fill out a FAFSA form without the parents’ information?
I am helping my 19 yr old niece with her FAFSA forms and her parents REFUSE to help her or give her any information. (loooong story) Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Michelle answers:
Depending on the circumstances, the student may make an appeal for independence. Contact the school’s financial aid office. They will be able to provide guidance in this situation.
If the school determines that your niece does not have an appealable situation there is still a way to obtain financial aid.
The new rules for 2009-2010 allow a student who’s parents REFUSE to provide information on the FAFSA but who are not eligible for an appeal for dependency to be eligible for unsubsidized loans. The student would only be eligible for $5500 this year. Again, you and the student should meet with the financial aid office to discuss.
Good luck.

Can I apply for FAFSA as a sophomore in college next year?
I didn’t apply for FAFSA aid this year (figured I wouldn’t get anything since my parents make about $110k a year), and I kind of regret doing so. My parents also felt uncomfortable about filling out all of the personal information. I was planning to file a FAFSA next year just incase, though, and I was wondering if you can file for a FAFSA as a college sophomore? Is the FAFSA a “by the year” thing or is it for four years?
Michelle answers:
Yes you apply by the year. When you and your parents do their taxes for 2008 you need to do your fafsa as well. (Feb/March of 2009). This will be effective for the 2009-2010 school year.
You will likely be offered Unsubsidized Stafford Loans.
Carol asks…
What do I do with my fafsa when my parents are in the process of getting divorced?
I don’t know what to fill out for the 2012-2013 FAFSA for my parents’ income status. They are in the process of getting divorced, and it will be finalized in six months. What should I do?
Michelle answers:
You have the option of married, divorced or SEPARATED. Perhaps one of those would fit… Don’t listen to the others, they are wrong and obviously have never actually READ a fafsa or they would know the options.
Ruth asks…
I submitted the wrong info about my parents income into FAFSA, can I make corrections?
I put the wrong info about my parents income on my FAFSA. I completed it today, I have to wait until its processed until I can make corrections. The deadline is the 15th. Will I get in trouble? Will I be able to make the correction in time?
Michelle answers:
Dont panic. When you filled out the FAFSA form it asked you to sign up for a pin # , o that you can later log in and make changes. Do it now. If for some reason it doesnt allow you to make them, there is a 800 or 888 number on that website form.
I would call them and tell them you need to make corrections before its processed.
Try logging in now and if no luck, call first thing Monday morning.Dont wait past monday.
