Your Questions About Fafsa

Thomas asks…

What should I do with my FAFSA application if my parents have not yet filed a tax return?

We have just migrated to the U.S 2 years ago and have never filed a tax return or any kind of similar documents. However, we are going to file one soon. What should I do with my FAFSA in this case ?

Michelle answers:

Follow the instructions on the application. Either wait to file until they do their taxes or estimate it based on their other financial documents and correct it once they file. Make sure you qualify for aid before stressing about how to fill out the application though. Www.fafsa.ed.gov

Mark asks…

What happens if you miss the fafsa deadline?

So tomorrow is the deadline for the fafsa, but when i went to fill it out today i had to change my pin #. Then when i logged back in it said it would take 3 days before i can use my new pin, which means i will miss the fafsa deadline. So what exactly does that mean? Can i still apply for scholorships and grants if my fafsa is late? Can i still sign up for classes? Or am i completely screwed? Please help!

Michelle answers:

It means you don’t get your money unless you talk to the federal aid reps at the college you’ve chosen and ask them for an extension which they may give for you.

Laura asks…

How do you fill out the student financial part of the fafsa?

I’m trying to put in my own student financial information into the fafsa, however, my parents want to fill out their information at a later time. As of now, it forces me to enter parental information first. Is there a way to put my own information first and have them fill out their information later?

Michelle answers:

Lol, put in random information and move on to the next section. You can always go back and change the answers before you submit it.

William asks…

Is there any other way to receive financial aid rather than FAFSA?

I do not know if my FAFSA will be accepted, and if it does not, I would like to know if there are any other options to look at for aid. Thank you.

Michelle answers:

There are 4 major places to find financial aid
1) The FAFSA – which you already completed
2) State aid – depending on which state you live in there may be both need based and non-need based financial aid that you may qualify for. The financial aid office at the school(s) you are looking at can give you information on the state financial aid.
3) The third source is institutional financial aid. This would be need based aid provided by your university, or merit based aid based on your test scores/academic achievements. It is very important to meet with a financial aid officer at your school. Some scholarships have separate applications.
4) The last source is outside scholarships (provided by 3rd party organizations). There are numerous search engines online. Check with your employers, your parents employers, friends employers, etc.
