Does a college student have to send in a FAFSA application?
I’m in college and need financial aid to afford it. But I am not sure whether I have to send in a FAFSA application or can I just take out a private student loan to pay for my college. The money I get from the FAFSA doesn’t cover all of my college expenses anyways, and I need to apply for an additional loan through a private loaner regardless. So is it okay for me to only apply for a private loan and to not even bother with a FAFSA? If anybody has any information on this topic please post an answer. Thank you.
Michelle answers:
Well you don’t ever HAVE to apply for FAFSA. It is just an option. But in my opinion any free money hel is welcomed!!
You should apply and then take the loan with what ever else you need.
Good luck

How long does it take the University of Houston to send out fafsa awards?
I submitted mine in February 15th. All my friends have received theirs, im scared that I won’t receive mine. My efc was 0. On the UH fafsa section on my account it says “No financial aid data available”. What does that mean? When should I expect to receive my fafsa award.
I’m really nervous thank you!
Michelle answers:
First, have you received an acceptance offer for enrollment from the Univ. Of Houston already?
Once you have been notified of acceptance as a student by the univ., you will be notified of your financial aid offer (not your FAFSA awards – FAFSA – Free Application for Federal Student Aid – is only an application for consideration of student financial aid.)
Sometimes schools will give the notice of a student’s financial aid awards at the same time as the acceptance notice. With other schools it will be within about 2-3 weeks after the acceptance for admittance notice is sent.
I could not find any dates for sending out the acceptance notices or notices of financial aid awards on the Univ. Of Houston web pages. Sorry I can’t give you an actual date.
Best wishes

Do I have to apply for FAFSA again if im going to start school a semester late?
I applied for FAFSA for the 2010-2011 school year but the thing is that I didn’t end up going to school for the first semester. So I was wondering if I had to do the application for FAFSA all over again.
Michelle answers:
So i take it you’ll be starting school in the spring of 2011? If so, no you aren’t required to complete a new application because you’ve already completed the 2010-2011 application. What you’ll want to do is make the school aware of the fact that you have completed your application but won’t be starting school until the spring (if this is the case). You WILL need to re-apply for FAFSA every year though, but in this instance you have already completed the application and will be unable to submit a new one until January 2011 and that application is for the 2011-2012 school year..
Betty asks…
How do you fill out your FAFSA if your family isn’t speaking to you?
If you lived with your grandparents for the last few years of high school because your situation with your parents was extremely unhealthy, how would you go about filling out your FAFSA for college if you have no contact with your legal guardians? Would you be able to use your grandparents’ financial information since they were supporting you? Also, what if your parents/grandparents are gay/lesbian? The FAFSA application asks you to list your mother/stepmother and father/stepfather. Help?
Michelle answers:
They want the information from your legal guardians. You would have to work with FAFSA to get them to consider your grandparents as guardians if there are no legal papers. Whether or not you could do this would depend on how long you have lived with them. They will not take into consideration Gay/lesbian lifestyle. If your legal guardians or parents are gay or lesbian it is fine.
