Your Questions About All Natural Pregnancy Products

James asks…

Using DEET in pregnancy? (Mozzy repellents when abroad)?

Hi all

Has anyone used DEET based products whilst pregnant whilst abroad? I need to use some repellent as I am travelling to a tropical climate and I am mozzie bait! The advice out there is varied.

I have Mosiguard which is a natural spray and usually serves me well however in the evening I usually use Bens 100 which is over 90% DEET.

Both are pump sprays so are not like when you spray an aerosol and breathe them in. But I have read mixed reviews about using DEET when pregnant. I’ll be using it from 11 weeks but would love to hear what other people have used and also what advice they were given?

I have an appointment with my GP and midwife so will be bringing it up then but would love to hear from others!

Also using sun lotion with in-built mozzie repellent? Should I be concerned?

I will of course try and cover up as much as possible, I am not due to be in malarial areas and do not need to take pills however it is a tropical place (Thailand)! Preventing the bites is also important rather than getting bitten by mozzies and other critters..

Please help!

Michelle answers:

Preventative measures in Thailand for mosquito bites:

– Keep a fan blowing on you as much as possible. Drives mosquitoes nuts and they won’t bite.
– Live as high up as you can go. The higher you are the fewer mosquitoes there will be.
– Get yourself a mosquito “tennis racket”. Thais use them a lot to swat mosquitoes, not play tennis. They electrocute the little buggers but are harmless to you. Available everywhere in Thailand. Good Thailand souvenir.
– Citronella works fine, but needs to be re-applied more often. DEET is probably the best, and you don’t need a solution stronger than 30%. You’ll have to do your homework about the risks.

I’ve lived in Thailand for 5 years, and haven’t heard of one case of malaria. Dengue fever is a slightly higher risk, but there’s no vaccination. Just prevention. A greater risk is from lack of hygiene. Bad-germ prevention is more important than mosquito bite prevention.

You don’t have to go nuts with the suncream. I use a UV umbrella when I’m outside, that is, an umbrella which has a sort of gray lining. Some umbrellas have that in Thailand, some don’t. No need to mix suncream and mosquito repellent. Suncream is mostly for the face, the other is mostly for the foot/ankle area if that’s exposed.

Betty asks…

What was/is the hardest part of pregnancy?

I’m not pregnant yet but my husband and I plan on trying soon and i’m started to get scared already. I’ve read about getting varicose veins and spider veins(which I already have some of) and other things like that.

Also the idea of the actual birth scares the hell out of me! Honestly, I know everyone’s experience is different, but how bad is it…with an epidural? I’m very petite and my sister in law always jokes that she doubts my body can even handle a natural birth and such I don’t know I’m just scared…probably sounds dumb. I know the end product makes it all worth it…but just looking for insight.

Thanks in advance

Still waiting on my first.

To be honest I am really zen about birth so far. I just prefer not to think about it. It also helps to have moms around you that hate negative stories and would rather tell you positive things.

Chris asks…

Does anything make stretch marks go away?

I’m convinced that my thighs and buttox are fat because I have these stretch marks that I got during pregnancy. I lost all of my weight but my legs just look so gross that I want to hide them in pants!

Now that it’s summer, I’m like… gee what do I do? Suffer in pants or just show off my hideous marks?

They started about a year ago. How long does it take for them to fade on their own? Some of them are turning white, but I can still see where the skin is a different texture.

Is there a product or a natural remedy that helps with this?

Michelle answers:

Your stretch marks appear if you rapidly lose the weight from your pregnancy. But don’t worry, your stretch marks should gradually become less noticeable. Here are a couple tips that will help you reduce the appearance:
-It helps to massage the stretch marks in a circular motion when you shower or take a bath so that it can stimulate circulation.

-Massage your stretch marks with cocoa butter and with vitamin E oil after you shower/bathe.

-Eat foods or drink juices that are very high in vitamin C and E.

-Soybean, brown rice, bell peppers, and other foods that are high in zinc help support fibers in your skin.

-Drink a lot of water. Your stretch marks may be turning white because you lack the right amount of water.

Hope this helps! Good luck

Hair Question At 7Weeks?

Hello everyone thank you for helping answer my question the best you can all answers are appreciated
I’m 7weeks and 2days pregnant,my hair is fading from a dye job I had done 2weeks ago,it was vegan dye and there was no harsh chemicals involved, well my hair is currently blue, purple, and black,i am rinsing the color out but I had planned to use a color remover to erase all color an be natural blonde again the product is called Colour B4 im curious if it could effect my pregnancy enough to hurt the baby,I will be asking my doctor and hair dresser next time I see them but I’m curious if any other moms have messed with their hair during pregnancy

Michelle answers:

You can use normal hair dye- it’s actually best to have a hair dresser do it with good ventilation.
It’s the fumes that are bad- not it actually being in your hair.

YES- your hair will start to do crazy things like change texture and become different- mine went to normal to oily then to super dry at 25 weeks. My hair color came out really fast the first month due to how greasy my hair was but it did slow up. Now my skin is driving me nuts!!
