Your Questions About Natural Pregnancy Test

Laura asks…

I am over week, have taken four pregnancy tests and all are showing up negative. Could I be pregnant?

I am now over a week late. I am never late; my periods are like clockwork. But, according to four pregnancy tests taken since I missed my period, I am not pregnant. I did take 2000mg of Zithromax for an infection a little over a week ago and am under a good bit of stress, but antiobiotics and stress have never affected my cycle before. I have two beautiful girls, both who were conceived the first month we tried. I also got a positive pregnancy test on both of them three to four days before I missed my period. My husband and I practice natural family planning. The hormones in birth control mess me up and the latex in condoms give me awful UTIs. Has anyone else been pregnant and received multiple negative pregnancy tests?

Michelle answers:

Did your NFP chart confirm ovulation at the regular time of your cycle? If you had illness and infection, even though they haven’t affected you in the past, you may have ovulated later than usual or even not at all. Antibiotics can definitely delay ovulation as well as confuse your NFP charting. You may have thought your cervical mucus dried up due to being post-ovulation, but that may have been due to the medicine and there might not have been any ovulation at all. Do you chart your temperatures as well? That would be a helpful cross-check at this point. But, like I said, if you had already confirmed ovulation before starting the medicine, then there are a couple of other scenarios.

First may be that yes, you are pregnant but you are not testing positive at home. Are you using first morning urine to test? I have a friend who didn’t test positive at home for over 2 weeks. Your doctor can definitely do a blood test and check for sure.

You may also have suffered from a LUFS cycle, which is a lutenized unruptured follicle cycle. The follicle gets very large but at the time of ovulation the egg does not burst out. However, the follicle still starts triggering progesterone and usually continues to produce progesterone for longer than your usual luteal (post-ovulation) phase. 18-21 days is the normal time from the LUFS to your next cycle, which is right where you are. Are you having any pain from your lower pelvis? A cyst is also possible, but if you aren’t having pain or any bloating/swelling then that is probably not as likely.

So the bottom line is, there is probably no rush on this unless it’s making you nuts. I would wait another 3-5 days and if you still haven’t gotten your period, do one last home pregnancy test and if it’s negative, contact your doctor and see if you need to come in for a blood test. Every woman has an off cycle, even a cycle with no ovulation, from time to time, so it’s not necessarily anything big to worry about. In the meantime, try to do some stress relief if you can! Hope everything resolves itself soon.

Maria asks…

How long should I wait to take a HPT after a miscarriage?

I have had one previous pregnancy that ended up fine. We were trying for our 2nd child for 9 months finally I had gotten pregnant then on 7/15/07 I had a natural miscarriage at 4 weeks along. On 7/24/07 my HCG levels were back down to 0 on August 5th I took a pregnancy test and it came out negative which I figured it would have but I haven’t gotten my period yet its been exactly 5 weeks so far I haven’t had any symptoms of getting my period and how long do you think it should take for my period to get back to normal or when should I take a HPT? Thank you all for the answers and advice and please no rude comments

Michelle answers:

I have miscarried too and you will probably not get pregnant OR have a period until you have a D&C. See, some of the placenta and other, sorry, dead cells are still in your uterous and need to be “cleaned” out. You really need to see your OB/GYN immediately. I don’t mean to scare you and you shouldn’t be, you just need to follow the next step so you can have many babies after. Hope this helps and good luck.

Robert asks…

How late is your period? If it was me, I’d wait til it was 4-5 days late, then test. Sorry to hear about your MC, I really hope that this is your lucky month. Baby dust x

Your Questions About The Oldest Natural Pregnancy

Mary asks…

VBAC after Csection, how long should you wait to get pregnant again?

So I had unscheduled csection little over a week ago and I just feel miserable about the whole thing, I can’t do much for myself, all I do is sleep and sit in the living room, feed the baby. Anyway I am really depressed, disappointed. Both me and my baby came out healthy and that’s the most important thing. Anyway, my question is with my next pregnancy, which I don’t plant to have for another 2 years or so, if say I get induced again, is it true I’ll have csection since I already had one? I read that if you get induced when you already went through a csection you have to have another csection. This makes me really sad and upset to be honest, because I really don’t want another csection. Also I was told if you go for VBAC my chances of having my uterus rupture is very high. This is another thing that terrifies me, and say if your uterus ruptures, can you have more children or you can’t? and can it be fixed? I plan to have more children, and I am thinking about going to a birth center but I was told if you wanna attempt a VBAC is it’s crucial you go to a hospital where they can help with emergency just in case it happens while giving birth? I am clueless since this was my first baby, I did everything I could to have a natural birth but things didn’t go my way and that frustrates me. I am helpless and crippled and I hate being dependent on others even if that’s my husband or mother… It’s only been a week and half since the birth of my baby and I hate not being able to do anything for myself, my recovery is going well but I still have a long way before I am back to my old self or able to do things like cleaning and cooking for my family. I was healthy, very active 25 year old and now I feel nothing like my old self and I don’t think I’ll feel that way ever again. I can’t even sleep on my side, I have to sleep on my back and even that when I wake up it feels as if my inside is falling out. My biggest fear is needing more csections or not being able to have more children in the future and this terrifies me… In another word c-section destroyed a dream for me. A dream of having a natural birth and I can’t get over it to be honest….

Michelle answers:

Inductions are more likely to lead to C-sections in any case. This is why if you are trying for a VBAC they don’t like to induce you unless necessary. They want your body to do most of the work to avoid a C-section.

As far as uterine rupture goes, the risk is actually very low but it also depends on the type of incision you got. I myself got a ‘bikini cut’ and the risk is low with those. But it is something the doctors and nurses will be prepared for either way since there is some risk.

I know how you feel, I really do. My son was an emergency section and the first few weeks were hell for me. I couldn’t do a lot as far as caring for him went and I hated that. We recently moved and my new doctor has given me the option of a VBAC and I’m going for it. My son will be around 2 1/2 when that time comes and I believe they like to have at least 2 years between babies if you’re going to try for a VBAC.

If this is something you wish to do with future children research it a bit. There are tons of support groups and blogs out there with women in our shoes.

John asks…

What do you think about this?

I am 20 years old and overweight. Other than that I am extremely healthy. I walk daily and eat the proper foods (meaning I follow the food pyramid guide). My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant now for two years and I have been checked three times to ensure than I can get pregnant. The doctors tell me nothing is wrong with me and I have been pregnant once before but lost the pregnancy at around 8 to 10 weeks without cause. It was a natural miss-carriage and only required an internal ultrasound rather than a D&C. I have yet to get pregnant since then. I was reading online and found that lack of vitamin D interferes with fertility do you think this could be the reason why we have not gotten pregnant? I have a vitamin d deficiency and am not taking supplements for it. At the time I was pregnant I was on the pills, but ran out a little before I miss-carried (I assume the vitamin d would have still been in my system so this, I think, is not what caused the miss-carriage).

Michelle answers:

Miscarriages that early are common. There’s no usually anything that you could do to prevent that. If you already know that you need vitamin D then you should be taking it. Take it whether you are trying to get pregnant or not. If you know you have this problem always keep an extra bottle of it around at all times so if you run out you can take the other one for a few days until you can pick up another one. As far as the food pyramid I hope you are following the current ones at http://www.mypyramid.gov/ and not the old ones. The original food pyramids are actually following the same diet guide lines they use to fatten up pigs.

Besides for the vitamin D, get an ovulation test kit to find out when you are actually fertile as well as if and when you are ovulating. Many things can effect your fertility, but first you should take take of these two things and then go from there. Chart your ovulation and cycles and if it turns out that you are only ovulating ever other month or few months then you can take that information to your doctor and go from there.

Good luck to you.

Michelle answers:

I didn’t even read all that…

It is doing the animal good, and it doesn’t hurt them. They’re sedated for a while during the surgery, and they’re given pain relievers later, which is why they’re droopy and act tired. It’s the owner’s choice. If you don’t like it, don’t do it. You’re not changing anything by posting this. By spaying a female dog, it prevents a lot of health issues, and it /saves/ the lives of future puppies. Puppies have no soul before they are born – they don’t exist. It is better for something to not exist than to suffer or experience life and then die shortly after. Most puppies born end up as either orphans or in shelters, where they are eventually put to sleep when not adopted – and mutts or bad breeding lines can result in early developmental problems and bad conformation, which later leads to severe pain for the dog and it will either die on its own or have to be put down. And by neutering male dogs, it obviously prevents puppies being born.

Guess what? My dog isn’t spayed! What about that!
My dog has excellent show and police dog lines. Her conformation is wonderful and she is built great. By breeding her, we end up with healthy puppies and we KNOW they are going to get good homes. Bad breeding can end up, as I said before, with very bad results. Most dogs out there should not be bred, for the welfare of the future puppies, and even the mom. And if someone doesn’t want to breed their dog, they have their own reasons. A lot of people don’t have the time to take care of them, clean up after them, and sell them. I see you have no idea how the real breeding business industry is – its close to a full-time job.

And for reference to others – here is a quote from one of her questions (freaking out about her dog being pregnant.) “thanks for the help! By the way, im only an 12 year old girl asking for my pregnant dog!! Hhe thanks again!!”
You’re just a kid. You don’t know everything.

Maria asks…

Just found out I’m 35 weeks pregnant?

I’m a 18 year old college student. I was on contraception for 2 years (the pill) and forgot it sometimes and obviously about 8 months ago my boyfriend got me pregnant as I’ve just found out I’m 35 weeks pregnant. He is very excited although it was a shock to us both, he says it was the best Christmas present ever but I’m still adjusting to the idea. I’ll be 35 weeks and 5 days now, found out last week when I went to my doctor complaining of stomach pains, movements in my abdomen and back ache. Funny thing is i’m not even showing apart from a little bump but I just thought I was putting on weight due to the pill! The doctor examined me and asked if I had my period recently and I told him I hadn’t had it for a while but I thought it was just the pill. He asked me to do a pregnancy test and it came up positive, he said I would be around 18 weeks after feeling around my stomach and checking the baby’s heartbeat and sent me for a scan that afternoon, I felt devastated, I’m only 18 and the first thought that popped into my mind when the test came up positive was abortion which I feel guilty about now. When I went to the hospital, I met the midwife and she told me I’m 35 weeks! Was also told I’m having a baby girl when I asked the sex. I’m very scared about labor and birth now, my midwife told me to phone her whenever I needed to ask anything as I’ve got a lot to learn for the next few weeks, also I’m going to antenatal classes starting in 2 days. I just don’t know what to do with myself, I don’t feel that I want this baby but in a way I love this baby and would do anything to protect her. I have happy moments but I have sad ones too. My family say that they will support me but they are also very shocked and trying to adjust to the idea. I want to look forward to my baby’s arrival but I’m so scared. I always said I would want a natural home birth for my first baby but I don’t know if my midwife would let me do this as I’ve found out so late in my pregnancy, I’m going to see her again tomorrow but I don’t like he idea of having my daughter in hospital. I also don’t like the idea of a stranger handing her to me, I want to be the first to hold her. Is this possible? Also, how can I look forward to motherhood? I want to be excited like my boyfriend but I’m finding it hard although I love my daughter already. Has anyone else found out about being pregnant later on in pregnancy?

Michelle answers:

Did you know there is a show I did not know I was pregnant. I found out I was pregnant when I was fours but I was TTC for three years, so I test after one day late. But my sister found out she was pregnant when she was 25 weeks. At first the doctor said she was having twins because she was alright showning but then they said it was because she was already 25 weeks along.

Michelle answers:

Mine alwayz goes
Page cannot be displayed it took to long to load
ALOT!
But its better than Explorer!

Paul asks…

FireFoX????????

I always hear that Fire fox is better than Internet Explorer and its faster safer ect….But what are the bad things about firefox?

Michelle answers:

I really don’t know of any bad things, since it’s open source. The only complaints I have are that cut and paste could be done a little better; and it should allow shortcuts like Internet Explorer. I really don’t like bookmarks.

On the plus side of things, it allows Java and Javascript.

Microsoft tried to set the standard for both programming languages, but Sun Microsystems wouldn’t put up with any of that, so Microsoft purposely crippled all future versions of it’s browser – and as a result – Internet Explorer will no longer enable Java or JavaScript. Also, Dynamic HTML is disabled. That was supposed to be one of the next steps, in the evolution of the internet.

Microsoft and it’s monoploy have done more to cripple the internet, than all of the spammers, virus writers, adware / malware writers, software pirates, and hackers combined.

Your Questions About Natural Pregnancy Induction

Steven asks…

Is there a safe way to induce labor at home?

At my 38 week appointment yesterday I was 1cm dilated and 90% effaced. My blood pressure has been high on and off throughout my pregnancy and now my doctor is starting to talk about inducing labor. I have another appointment tomorrow morning and he will likely schedule the induction.

I understand that it could be SO much worse than an induction and I am willing to have it if necessary, but I would prefer to avoid it as I feel natural labor is less stressful for the baby than forced medical induction.
So, have any of you have an luck with any “natural” ways to induce? Like sex, nipple stimulation, walking, etc?
Thanks for any information.

Michelle answers:

Some people say that the “Nipple Stimulation” works….

Mandy asks…

A question for moms who have been induced…?

So I am 40 weeks 1 day pregnant with my first. I have not dilated or effaced AT ALL, and I have not had ONE contraction. The baby has come down, and my doctor can feel his head, but that is all. My birth plan, since before we conceived, has always been to give birth at what is called ‘The Alternative Birthing Center’. It is basically all of the good things of a home birth, only it is at a hospital. So if, god forbid, anything were to go wrong the baby would be safe, but I would not be hooked up to monitors or IVs, I would be able to walk around, labor in the shower, tub, push in any position that I want. Bottom line, very little, if any, medical interventions are used at the birthing center. It is completely 100% natural. At this point I am nervous that I will not go into labor by myself and will have to be induced. This means I will no longer qualify to give birth at the birthing center, which I am okay with, as long as my son comes out healthy and happy.

My problem is I have done TONS of research on natural child birth, and know pretty much all I can know about it, with out actually being a doctor of course. I have not, however, looked into modern birth practices, which I will be doing that after posting this question. I was hoping to read the induction stories of other moms. I just have never seen pregnancy and birth as a medical condition needing a medical procedure, and it all scares me.

My question is for moms who have been induced (I have quite a few…):

– Were you able to labor with out any pain medication?
– If you did end up needing an epidural did it slow your labor tremendously?
– Did you end up with a c-section?
– Were you still able to successfully breastfeed?
– Just any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you so very much for your help.
Thank you everyone! All of your answers and advice are stellar! I don’t want to have to choose best answer :o( I have done a bit more research, and I do feel better now. I also think that due to my long cycles, yeah 33 days on average, that really my due date should probably have been this Friday (April 16th) and NOT this past Monday (April 12). So, we are feeling good, and hubby is takin’ me out to dinner tonight, woohoo! Thank you again so very much!!!

Michelle answers:

– Were you able to labor with out any pain medication? No, It was the most tremendous pain ever and the contracts came so hard and back to back that I couldn’t deal and I was only about 2cm dilated. I feel that I am a person who has a pretty high pain tolerance and was totally taken aback about how painful it was for me
– If you did end up needing an epidural did it slow your labor tremendously? I did get my epidural right away at the 2cm point and I actually seemed to speed up my dilation. From what I have read in recent studies epidurals actually help speed up the process for some woman because of the pain relief the body relaxes and does its work. I also had break through pain and when that happened I actually shrunk form 10cm back to 7cm. So for me pain relief really did help me dilate
– Did you end up with a c-section? No
– Were you still able to successfully breastfeed? Yes and no, my son was large and on the second night because my milk had not come in they recommend i give him a bottle. Unfortunately it was free flow nipple and learned very quickly that the bottle took much less work then the breast so he wouldn’t nurse. But i did pump and feed him breast milk in a bottle
– Just any advice would be greatly appreciated- I would say if you can avoid induction then do, When they give you a due date it can go up to the 42 week mark because it isn’t an exact science. If you and your baby are in no danger then you should insist on waiting the full 42 weeks. Our babies know when they are ready to be born and if they are not in distress then they still have some growing to do. I can only imagine how many babies would be better off to wait the extra 2 weeks if woman would stop allowing medical intervention. I was told because my water had ruptured a little bit I didn’t have a choice, however since it didn’t fully break I now know that I could have waited some and my son very well may have come at his own time. For me induction was an awful experience and I would like to never do it again. I also feel that the nurse had much more control then I wanted. I think it is ridiculous that a woman is being made to push for hours on end to deliver a baby. The contractions are doing their job by moving the baby down the birth canal and when its time to push your body knows and will do it. Even with an epidural there came a time that I couldn’t not push my body took over and with about 4 uncontrollable pushes my baby arrived. I feel that the almost 3 hours of pushing before hand where very wasteful of my energy and actually caused injury to me which I still suffer pain from to this day and our son is almost 2 1/2. I say good for you for doing your research and taking control of your experience. Best of luck to you!!!!

Maria asks…

Should I just go for the C-section?

I know this is really only something I and my OB can decide but I would like some opinions. I really wanted to go all natural but I don’t know if it is even worth trying.

Reasons:
This is my second child. My first was born at 21 weeks gestation and died shortly after birth due to placental abruption.
They will not have me go past about 36 weeks so as to not put any additional pressure on my placenta. This means induction which %40 of all inductions end in c-sectons anyway.
This baby also has a umbilical cord that is attached to the side of the placenta instead of the middle so he will likely be growth restricted and lower in birth weight.

I have read that usually they let you try to labor normally but if the baby shows sings of distress than they do a c-section. The baby can have trouble getting enough oxygen and in rare cases the umbilical cord can pull away from the placenta during labor leaving him without any oxygen until they can rush the c-section. But now I am thinking I don’t even want to risk having problems when laboring. I am thinking I am just going to ask for a planned c-section. We do want more kids but after what we have been through we care more about getting through this pregnancy than worrying about the future and how c-sections effect future pregnancies. What is your opinion?
My pregnancy is considered high risk and I am currently seeing a Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist. She is generally not one to push the c-section and she said I do not HAVE to go early if I insists on going longer we can do that but I have already held one child as he took his last breath…. I can’t do that again. I am going to do what they recommend and let them take this baby early. March of Dimes had done a study that shows before 36 weeks there are more risks and problem but as of right now there are no known long term risks of problems for those infants born after 36 weeks. My doctor really hasn’t even suggested a c-section as of yet but I just am trying to decide if I just want to ask for one.

Michelle answers:

Its what you feel most comfortable with. But if i were in your situation, i would be leaning toward a planned c-section. Mainly because if something did go wrong in the labour, or they realized that they would need to do an emergency c-section, you’re going to lose some valuble minutes while they are prepping to do the c-section. Not only that but the emergency of it is probably going to add stress and anxiety to yourself and your husband. Which neither of you need at that point.
Where as with the planned c-section, you’re going to know what to expect (for the most part) when you’re being brought into surgery, which will make both of you plenty more stress free. Hope this helps. I’m having a planned c-section due to medical issues as well. Tough decision, but decided it was a better decision than risking a bad out come and stressful situation by chancing labour.
Good Luck!!!!

Joseph asks…

OBGYN trying to convince me to have a c-section. Not as cut and dry as you’d think…?

Without getting to into detail, I’m 38.5 weeks. I see a midwife, but since I am doing a VBAC it’s policy to meet with an OBGYN at 38 weeks to make sure the VBAC is still the plan. That is the only time this OBGYN is seen.

At that appointment, the OBGYN stressed many times that if I make it to 40 weeks and haven’t gone into labour, that I would need to meet with an OB again to schedule a c-section.

I’m quite annoyed by this. I am having a healthy pregnancy, the baby is healthy. I had a c-section last time because the baby was stuck at 9cms for 2 hours through no fault except the epidural (because I couldn’t get up and walk around or get into different positions).

The hospital I’m delivering at is VBAC friendly, but yeesh, once you get to 40 weeks it’s like they view you as a time bomb. Why is that? Why are doctors so eager to bully women into repeat c-sections if there are no issues with health with you or the baby? What makes 40 weeks the sudden “magical number” when you’ve had a c-section when any other woman will be left alone until 42 weeks?

I just want to go into labour naturally. Everything natural was taken away from me with my previous labour, right straight from the induction to delivery. And this time around, I can’t be induced. So…Why don`t they just allow a natural trial of labour instead of poking their noses into things?

My scar has healed perfectly inside and out. I’m an excellent candidate for a VBAC. So if I’m a perfect candidate UP TO 40 weeks, should I not be just as good after 40 weeks, too Like, seriously, what changes?

Also, the region I live in within Canada does not allow me to find another obstetrician. There are 4 OBs in my area that work on a rotational basis, so I get to see who I get to see. It’s pretty horrible.
Ehh…they say inducing after a previous c-section increases the risk of uterine rupture. They certainly would not use the cervical gel again like last time since you can’t control it, but I have been hearing conflicting arguments on pitocin. Some say a very small dose is okay, some say NO WAY at all. There’s another method which they don’t like to discuss called the Foley catheter. Not sure if you’re familiar, but it’s essentially a balloon that they put in your cervix and slowly fill with saline to artificially force your cervix to dilate…until it gets the message that it should be dilating on its own. But…yeah. every day is stressful watching out for labour because I *really* don’t want to get into an argument over my delivery with anyone, much less a doctor.
C-sections should only be used for necessary emergencies, and not out of convenience! Even if the baby does get “large”, that is no reason to not allow a trial of labour. As long as the baby is fine and the mom is fine, what’s the harm being done?

The midwife, unfortunately, doesn’t have a leg to stand on. I’m being told that after 40 weeks, care is automatically transferred to some random OBGYN and the midwife will have no further dealings with me, except for post partum care. She thinks it’s crazy, too, but I’m basically going to be left fighting a battle alone.
Lori: do you live in a rural area in Canada? 1 hour away from me, in the nearest city, you have the option of looking for another OBGYN if you’re unsatisfied. NOT in my region, like I said. If I want to dive an hour away for my delivery (not happening), then sure, I can choose whoever I want. But throughout Canada, it varies. so really, just because you’re a nurse does not make you the authority on what is standard procedure in one jurisdiction over another.

Michelle answers:

Yeah, how is that any different than if you went into labor the day before, right? Lol

so just curious, why can’t you be induced this time? Personal or medical reasons?

Your Questions About The Oldest Natural Pregnancy

William asks…

52 Days no Period! Not good at the whole prenancy thing!?

Hello Everyone..

I’m a 30 year old female and never had the desire to have children since I was a child myself. But since Dec.’08, my husband and I made plans to have a child of our own. After research on conception and ovulation with the works. (lets face it, I am an expert on how not to get pregnant.. no idea how some people could actually get pregnant by accident with all the contraception out there, but that’s another story) So we stripped off the condoms and began unprotected sex.

I’ve always had a 32 day cycle prior to all this and my period has always come like clockwork and right on time..except since I lost my virginity, it tends to skip the month I lost every year since. So I’ve been use to it, it was like.. my period was rebooting that month or something.

Well back to trying to make a baby. It was December when we tried (A LOT) and come January.. no period. We were ecstatic, scared all of the naturals. I waited after the day of when my period usually starts. Negative! and every day after that… ALL NEGATIVE.. but no period.

I scheduled an appointment at a regular doctor on February 6th, and would you know it, I started spotting or something. 6 days later, I felt a twinge of pain on my right side and my period came that morning. And lasted until the 21st. The longest period of my life! A lot of tissue came out..sorry for being too graphic, but it was like Diarhhea spats of tissue falling out of my vagina.

I made a note after that to schedule an appointment with my OBGYN. I put it off sorry to say until recently. My period was suppose to come on the 16th of March. Nothing! Now I’m at 52 days since my last period. 52! My OB and I went over all this and she states that I might have miscarried. I argued a bit because 25 pregnancy test and all were negative. I used my Clearblue monitor and it stated that I never truly peaked during that last period… and I never peaked in this one either. I was High the whole time after the 9th day. I’ve taken 5 pregnancy test so far (not panicking that much anymore)

When she swooped me, she said there was a hint of red and I might be about to begin my period. She gave me a regular pee cup test, not a blood one. That was Mar. 30th at my OBGYN. So yesterday, I wiped myself and saw a hint of blood. Like.. red gooey mucous.. maybe a dot worth. My husband stated that he had some blood on him when he took a shower (I know gross but sorry) I put on a pad and set up banners and scheduled a parade for my periods homecoming. Today…nothing. No period.. no show. Just me left alone with a party hat and negative pregger test #7. Has anything similiar happened to anybody else. Or any suggestions. She wants me to return in 2 weeks if my period doesn’t begin to “induce my period” She also put me on Prenate DHA vitamins. I was taking Fertilaid supplement until a week ago. Goodness.. this all just doesn’t seem natural at all!

Michelle answers:

I have the same issue with missing periods and then having an extremely long one.. My Dr. Told me the that I was having “chemical pregnancies” that’s when your body senses that the baby is not healthy and automatically miscarries, this leads to a period that is about a week to two late and then a very heavy long period… I asked her why it didnt show on a preg test and she says that soemtimes preg tests dont come out pos that early.. Which I believe cuz I didnt get a pos preg test with my daughter till I was about 6 weeks along.. This happened to me twice.. Before I was told this I thought I was just not concieveing at the my periods were being weird.. So I was on clomid to help with ovulation but now with their latest findings they have me on all kinds of vitamins and and other things to help keep a pregnancy.. I hate it cuz I concieved my daughter the same month we started trying and now we have been trying for baby #2 for two years.. Frustrating!!! Best of luck to you!

Linda asks…

Are you good at giving names if you see the person? Here’s two of my characters, could you help me name them?

I know I know this has nothing to do with pregnancy or parenting or baby names but I as people search this topic maybe you are good at naming these two people?
I did my best to describe their characters if you’re going to use that.

ADDITONAL DETAILS: He’s based on this guy http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/9614/hesbasedoff.png but he’s not emo.

DESCRIPTION: He has black hair in a straggly haircut which is based off this picture. He has full lips and big shining eyes that are black (probably).
PERSONALITY: He’s a sweet, kind orphan who was adopted when he was eight and lived on the streets until then so he‘s pretty street smart. He is an excellent fighter and fights with both magic and swords. As a kid he was always timid and cute and still is sometimes but he’s hardened and shows less of his soft side now. He acts awkward in different situations.
NAME REQUIRMENTS: I need a first name and a last name for this one. His first name can be just about anything, but it can’t be too well known it can be in another language just not English. I need a cute story for his last name because the princess gave it too him. Keep in mind that she was like six when she named him so think like a six year old. An example is like he likes a certain food so she names him after that, or the colour of his eyes (onyx. Actually I might use that if I have too), or how he acts around her. Yeah.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS: Her first name is Soran but she’s known as Anne. She’s fifteen-sixteen years old.

DESCRIPTION: She has light blond hair (like bleached almost but is natural) and penetrating silver eyes that are very rarely dilated.
PERSONALITY: She’s a kind hearted, soft spoken person unless she feels very strongly about something in which case she will fight for it. She used to be a princess before she forgot it and it shows in her manners and how she speaks and acts.
NAME REQUIRMENTS: Could someone pick a last name that would be also a good name for a country and that could be shortened into a not too abnormal last name?

NOTE: Please try to make the guy’s name! I know girls are sooo much easier, but keep in mind I just want her last name. And his last name has to (welll doesn’t have to but it would be nice) have a back story. Thank you sooo much if you helped me out!
*smiles weirdly* telling me to crack open a baby name book isn’t actually helping, ya know? the reason I posted this question is so that I wouldn’t HAVE to.

In-laws pressuring me to induce?

My in-laws are starting to get crazy (well, they’ve always been control freaks) about my pregnancy, and I’d love some input on how to respond to them.

I am 41 weeks and 1 day pregnant with our first baby. I’ve taken lots of childbirth classes and done a lot of research throughout the pregnancy, and apparently it is perfectly normal for first pregnancies to go an average of ten days past the due date. Although tired and really ready for it to be over already, I am not worried at all and don’t feel like a freak of nature. I’ve tried acupuncture, herbs, walking and sex to get it move along, but nothing’s worked. This leads me to believe that the baby is just not yet totally ready.

My blood pressure is stellar, and this morning my non-stress test showed a healthy, active baby with a great heartbeat and activity level. I have ample amniotic fluid, and my placenta has a little bit of calcification but just looks like an “at-term” placenta.

I am also 100% effaced and 1.5 cm dilated, with baby at 0 station, and have been for almost three weeks. Everything is going along just fine!

That said, my parents-in-law have been calling everyday worried as hell, despite the fact that we keep telling them that everything is normal and perfect. They keep asking when I’m going to decide to get induced, because “This is just getting crazy” and “We’re beginning to wonder if you’re actually pregnant” and “This is too much”. Plus, my mother-in-law is freaking out about Thanksgiving and knows that if the baby is only a few days old, we won’t be going over there for the holiday. They want me to induce RIGHT NOW to relieve THEIR anxiety and make sure that we can come over for Thanksgiving.

In short, they are control freaks and are beginning to convey that they think there is something wrong with me for NOT taking this into my own hands and inducing immediately. It’s insulting.

We have a doula and have been planning on a natural birth, have a wonderful doctor who is totally supportive of natural birth, and if there is no medical reason for intervention, we want to avoid it. If the baby is not here by 42 weeks, we will induce – but not before then since everything is just fine.

How do we get my in-laws to stop stressing US out and making me feel like I’m doing something “wrong”?

Thanks in advance.

Michelle answers:

Tell them that it is yours and your husband’s decision not to rush anything. You want and hope that the baby will come naturally and your the one who has been pregnant for 41 weeks! Geez. If you have the patience to endure it a little longer, go you!

I got induced and ended up having an emergency C section because the pitocin was way too much for my baby’s little heart. My son and I both almost died that morning and I don’t recomend anyone getting induced.

I’d also tell her that there are many risks inducing labor. And unless the doctor and only the doctor tells you to induce you don’t want to hear anymore of it.

I hope all goes well and your baby decides to come soon.

Joseph asks…

Bio-hormone therapy for back pain…?

I am a 32 year old female with a long history of back/spine problems and consequently, moderate to severe chronic pain.

When I became pregnant in Aug of 08 I was terrified of how the pregnancy was going to affect my pain and mostly expected to be on bed rest in the later months. I was pleasantly surprised, however, when I was in my third trimester and felt better than I had in quite a few years! I continued to feel much less pain in my back (low neck, upper thoracic between shoulder blade and spine and low left lumber areas mostly) for the remainder of my pregnancy. According to the research I’ve done, it seems this mas likely due to the natural hormones created/released by the body during this time (i.e. relaxin). A chiropractor I was seeing during the end of my preg. and for a short while after delivery, told me there is a form of alternative treatment called “bio hormone therapy” which uses synthetics of these hormones that are created in the body during pregnancy. My question is, how do I find more information on this and find a health professional in my area that can help me? (I live in CT, USA)
“dave” – Thanks for the answer but I think I failed to give an accurate picture of my situation. I left out a lot because my question didn’t really warrant the knowledge. I have been to every kind of doctor there is – and many of each (orthopedic surgeons, Rhumatologists, Spine specialists, chiropractors, physical therapists, physiatrists, accupuncturists… you get the picture. The chiropractor that was treating me was NOT out to get my money and it’s sad that that was your immediate reaction to my question. I was the one who asked him about why my pain was less severe/more manageable during the last months of my pregnancy and he confirmed my thoughts that it may have had something to do with the body’s natural chemical production (in preparation for labor). He also said that he was no expert but that I should look into the bio hormone treatments as a possibility. FYI, just because someone doesn’t have 8 years+ of school and an MD after their name, they can still be quite knowle
… knowledgeable from experience and self-study. In fact I have been to some “doctors” that know much less than I about scoliosis and the potential resulting conditions, etc, simply because I have been dealing with these issues for over 13 years now and I do quite a lot of research myself. The majority of what a new doc knows is what he/she was taught in books. In most cases I’d take the experience of 20-30 years in practice, doing self-study out of a genuine interest in the human body’s functions and mysteries, over the fresh out f college hot-shot A-student doc any day.

Michelle answers:

The consensus with these is that they really don’t do anything:

“The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned that claims about compounded BHRT products are unsupported by medical evidence, unlike claims about manufactured, FDA-approved products. The chief medical editor of Endocrine Today called compounded BHRT a “marketing concept” with no scientific backing, and the FDA warned that pharmacies use these terms to imply that the drugs are natural and have the same effects as endogenous hormones.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bioidentical_hormone_replacement_therapy

Chiropractors have little if any medical knowledge and certainly know nothing about hormones. If you have suffered for a long time with back pain/spine problems then you should ensure you have been examined by a properly qualified back specialist (i.e. NOT a chiropractor).

There are plenty of people out there that will happily take your money in exchange for nonsense, ‘bio-hormones’ has nothing to recommend it except the sites marketing it.

Your Questions About Natural Pregnancy Book

John asks…

Question about prenatal vitamins ?

ok, so ive tried taking the all natural ones from walmart, one a days, the ones the doc prescribed, and Flintstones. and they all make me extremely sick. my diet isnt as good as it should be either. since ive become pregnant, the taste of fruits make me gag. i had a professional nutritionist come over for a few hours, and she showed me how to make “yummy” shakes out of fruits and veggies…every combo ive tried makes me gag. ive also become EXTREMELY lactose intolerant during this pregnancy…i tried drinking milk last week..and it made me sooooo sick. im not supposed to eat red meats right now, or salty items because im having weird blood pressure patterns, and my doc does not want to put me on medication for it until necessary. the doctor said that i should be fine with this diet until im 20wks, then i need to try the prenatals again. well im 20 wks now…and no change. everything makes me sick. can this hurt my baby? im very worried about it. i feel him kick and move around, so i know hes ok…but im worried about his growth/health. anyone have this problem? please dont say “go to the doc” because i have, and she sorta brushes me off, or tells me to “refer to you baby books” or some crap.

Michelle answers:

Bottom line, the baby will take from you what the baby needs. This can be a problem if you don’t have enough to share because the baby will take ALL that it needs, and you will be left with a deficiency. I couldn’t do the vitamins either, I gave up around week 8. I tried the Flintstones too, but they were obnoxious! I remember them tasting so much better when I was a kid..YUCK!

The two things you are going to have a problem with are calcium and iron. Forget all that omega 3 stuff, yeah some doctor some where did a test…whatever, our grandparents didn’t know what omega 3 was and our parents still turned out fine. Come to think of it our grandparents didn’t know not to drink or smoke either, and our parents are fine!

For the calcium I chewed Tums, Berry flavor, like they were candy, and for the iron I had some extra spinach and other leafy greens, because I hate liver! Anyway, those are going to be your 2 major problems, so I hope you like Tums and Spinach, GOOD LUCK!

Susan asks…

Did I have a blighted ovum or missed miscarriage?

Hi all, wonder if anyone can shed any light as I am confused!
About 3 months ago I was 11 weeks pregnant and experienced very light bleeding. I had an ultrasound and all that could be seen was a gestational sac, which just looked like a big black teardrop shape. There was no fetal pole or heartbeat to be found. I was booked in for a D& C and, on my notes, the doctor wrote ‘missed miscarriage’ – so that is what I believed I had.
Obviously I was devastated, but now I am 7 weeks pregnant again and extremely happy. I am very anxious about the chance of miscarrying again so I had a scan at 6 weeks and saw a very clear, strong heartbeat which was wonderful.
I have, I’m afraid, been obsessing a bit and looking at the internet to see what my chances are of carrying my baby to term. I have come across the term ‘blighted ovum’ – where a baby is conceived but there is something genetically wrong and, within the first trimester, it stops developing and either a natural miscarriage occurs or its seen on an ultrasound and a D&C is performed.
Now my question is this, and I hope you understand! Did I have a blighted ovum? Could there ever have been a fetus that died and was reabsorbed or broke apart? The Doctor said the sac looked about 8 weeks gestation. But it was clearly empty, me and my hubby could see that. Our dates were accurate as well, there was no way of confusing 8 weeks with 11 weeks.
What is the difference between blighted ovum and missed miscarriage? Does a blighted ovum turn into a missed miscarriage if the pregnancy and its symptoms continue but the fetus has died? Can I ever know whether anything developed?
Plus, and this is the biggie, if a heartbeat is seen at 6 weeks – can that baby then go on to be a blighted ovum?
Help! It’s all very confusing and we really weren’t informed that much in hospital.
Obviously seeking reassurance as this baby is very much wanted.
Thank you X

Michelle answers:

A blighted ovum is a type of pregnancy loss which happens in very early pregnancy. Your midwife or doctor might also refer to it as an anembryonic pregnancy, but it is more likely they will call it a silent or missed miscarriage. After conception, the fertilised egg (ovum) implants in your uterus (womb), but for some reason a baby does not develop. It can happen to anyone. It usually happens accidentally, and most women go on to have a successful pregnancy next time. This pregnancy can not possibly turn into a blighted ovum as thy would be no baby there to see and you have seen yours. A missed miscarriage is a baby who has developed so far and at some stage has died in the womb. This happened to me in March I was 8 weeks pregnant. I was not aware as the placenta kept producing hormones. It is devastating I know what you are going through now as I am now 10 weeks pregnant and so terrified of losing this baby. I look on the internet check my symptons every day and it is really worrying love. Just remember that when you have seen the heartbeat the baby has a good fighting chance and the odds are in your favor. Me and you was unfortunate last time but that does not mean we will be this time thats what I tell myself but I know it is hard to relax and you may worry all the way through this pregnancy but I think I will start to relax as time progresses and believe you will to. I wish you a happy pregnancy xxxx

Jenny asks…

Help with birthing classes?

My midwife has been harping on me to take childbirth classes with my husband. I would like a natural childbirth if possible, but am having a hard time choosing between Lamaze, Hypnobirthing or Bradley Method. This is my first pregnancy and I have little clue as to what’s going to happen during labor, but I thought a logical solution to my dilemma would to just buy a few different childbirth books read them all and then sort of utilize elements from each method during my childbirth…and then take the basic childbirth class at the hospital. (my midwife has told me to take this class in conjunction with another birthing method class)

So I guess my question is, are the birthing classes (such as Lamaze or Hypnobirthing) completely necessary if I do extensive research on my own? If you took any of these classes were they useful? Any other advice is appriciated!

Michelle answers:

I have decided not to take any classes, but my mother-in-law is somewhat of a birth coach and will be present during my labor and delivery. She and I have been working with the Bradley method (as she has the most experience with this type of birth) and I feel pretty prepared. My sister-in-law took a class with her husband though, and they both said they found it extremely beneficial. Sometimes I think it’s just about *feeling* informed and ready though, ya know? It’s important to be comfortable, and the more knowledgable you are, the easier it is to relax and go through with an easy labor. So if you feel that taking a class will help you to feel more prepared, then go for it…but I do think it’s entirely possible this day and age for a woman to completely educate herself and get through it just fine.

Carol asks…

a head start on preparing for birth of children ?

I really want to be a mother some day. so I guess the idea of giving birth has really fascinated me and scared me at the same time… what I’m most concerned about is (1) having a healthy birth for my child and me, and then (2) how I can best minimize the pain of birth. So I’ve been doing some research online.

Here’s some things I’ve already decided on:
>>I want a natural birth, if possible. because thats the way women were created to give birth.
>>I don’t want an epidural, because of possible side affects (longer labor, complications) …I think I want some kind of pain killer, but i’m not sure what would be the safest.
>>I think I want an upright birth position where my husband could sit/hold me from behind.
>>I also would like a trusted female friend who has given birth herself, to help me through my pregnancy and be there for the birth as extra support.
>>I want to be as educated as I can: take a class, read books, a learn relaxation techniques, etc.
(I understand that it may not happen the way I want.)

I am a kinda scared of the whole idea of birth, because, as of now, I don’t have a very high pain tolerance. my fear is that the time is going to come and I’m going to be absolutely terrified, and I’ve heard that fear tenses up the muscles and can make birth harder/more painful. So I don’t want that.

Important information: I’m 19 right now, and I’m not planning on having children for at least 5 years.
The reason why I’m researching birth right now is so that I can get used to the main ideas of what happens, so that when I am pregnant and taking a class/reading up and preparing, everything won’t be so surprising- I would have the idea of “okay, I’ve heard about this before, no need to freak out.”

Idk, so basically, instead of just 9 months to get ready, I’m taking 5 years. I’m not freaking out about it now, because 5 years is awhile. but I figured its good to start thinking about it now.

What do you ladies think of starting so early?? and the decisions I’ve already made??
Any other advice you might have for me??
thanks, everyone 🙂

Michelle answers:

Its good that your already thinking about what will happen when you have children. Theres nothing wrong with wanting children, but knowing it’s better to wait (very sensdible). Baby sitting for friends with children/ babies can help give you some idea about what your letting yourself in for. Watch videos of births, these can give you some idea of what it is really like. I had my first child when I was your age. Up until then I’d never experienced what real pain was like. Labour is extremely painful, there are often complications and a lot of women don’t get the birth they planned for. It is common for women to want a completely natural birth and then find that the pain is to much for them and they sensibly ask for a epidural. I’m pregnant with my third baby and I’m planning and really wanting a natural birth, this may or may not happen, labour is so unpredicatble that you can not tell. Good Luck

Your Questions About The Oldest Natural Pregnancy

David asks…

I’m due to have my 2nd baby in 5 weeks and starting to freak out about labour!?

My first baby (who is now 28 months old) was in the posterior position, spine to spine, and took 46 hours to get him out – after 36 hours I ended up having pethadine and gas – and that slowed everything down and so I was pushing for three hours (9pound baby boy)! I didnt tear, just grazed a little bit. So it wasnt an easy labour lol

This time round, I’ve decided to go to the birth centre to have a natural labour, no drugs unless medically advised

But now, i’m starting to remember all the little details that i thought i forgot! I know its natural and normal to be scared, but I wish it was like my first pregnancy when i didnt know what was coming

Anyone else feel ‘scared’ about going into labour again?

Michelle answers:

Crickey that didnt sound like the easiest of labour’s in the slightest..

But I always say is what you go through is difficult, but what you get at the end is the best bit… I had a rough labour, although it was only 12hours, I had pre-eclampsia and my daughter would not come down any further into the birthing canal.

I ended up with forcepts after having all the drugs I could and trying to bring her naturally, I had the epidural in the end because I could have the gas and air or pethadine, but my daughter turned right at the very last minute so it had to be forcepts, and I can assure you it wasn’t easy and was very painful. But is hasn’t turned me off at all. Me and my husband are trying again for the 2nd in september,

Although i’m not pregnant yet, I am scared about going into labour again, only because I don’t want the same thing to happen again.

Going to the birth centre is a good idea, as long as they have everything you need in an emergency.

Hope this helped… And good luck. Hope everything goes ok.

Charles asks…

I am 18 days late… could I be pregnant?

I am 33 years old mother of 3 a 15 year old daughter, an 11 year old son and a 2 year old daughter. I have used ept tests tpo find out I was pregnant with the 3 of them. And in the first try they have been correct a + sign. My first two children were natural and the little girl was c section (bridged). I stoped putting the once a month birth control shop on November of 2007. Doctors orders. To stop shot for a while and use the pill. Well I didn’t get them till like the end of January. My husband and I were intement without protection on the 15th of January 08. Around Febuary 5th I had clear discharge with a thin vein of blood so I figured I was going to start my period soon but nothing yet. I made me a 99¢ Store pregnancy test on the 17th of Febuary and it was negative. I then made me an ept on the 22nd of Febuary and it also was negative. I’ve been having lots of clear discharge, lots of gas, mood swings, a lot of running to the bathroom, my breast look fuller, my pants fit me tight
on my waist. My 2 year old is VERY fussy. I don’t have insurance to go see a doctor. I called a Parenthood Clinic around my area and asked how much they charge for a blood pregnancy test and they said $90 woooow. Any advise or familiar stories???????
Serious coments only please!!!
The two tests I have done with the first morning urine.

Michelle answers:

Sound like you might be. Have you taken the test in the morning? If not I would try that. If you don’t want to pay for the blood tests I would just wait another week or two tests with more hpts, and if stillnothing then you might just have to go. Good luck!!

Michael asks…

How do u deal with being soo exhausted and having a toddler?

We just found out we finally got prego after months of trying!!! I used an EPT so I found out a few days before I would have missed my period. But even though I’m like 4 weeks tomorrow I am already sooo exhausted I can’t even stand it. We have a 21 month old who is an amazingly well behaved child (thank god), and she does do really great at playing alone for a while. I’m a SAHM and I really have no idea how I’m going to get through the day everyday this exhausted. I swear last pregnancy I was NOT like this. In the last 2 days I’ve taken 3 naps during the day!!! And that was after going to bed early and sleeping in (I have an AMAZING hubby!) My 21 month old only take 1 35 minute nap in the afternoon. So even if I sleep with her; that is not enough! What can I do? Obviously caffine is OUT! And to top it off we have a huge event we’re hosting next Sunday and I am worried not only how I’ll stay awake through it; but I’m worried about being sick the whole time. In my frist pregnancy at about the 5-6 week mark I literally locked myself in our bedroom in the dark for 4 days and did’nt do anything but sip water, throw up, and sleep. I’m so affraid something like that will happen again. I can not miss our event next week; what can I do? Are there any safe natural foods that will boost energy? And also anything that will stop nusea?

Michelle answers:

Oh, honey. This was exactly how I was feeling my first trimester of this pregnancy. I got a lot of my energy back at around 13 weeks, but I know, it is so hard! Especially with another kid to chase around. My little girl just turned three.

One thing I did was toddler proof our family room really well, got out the baby gates, and gated my little girl in with toys and a kids movie. Then I’d lay on the couch right there in the same room and kind of doze. She watched a lot more Disney movies than usual, but it got us both through the day.

As for the nausea, my doctor prescribed me Zofran (generic: Odansetron) and it’s really wonderful. I wasn’t throwing up much, just nauseated all day every day. Now that I am well into my 2nd trimester (19 weeks), I haven’t needed it for weeks.

Another thing that my mom mentioned was that extreme exhaustion can be cause by low iron. I never had it checked, but you may want to ask your doctor. I know you may not have had your first appointment yet, but if you have legitimate concerns or questions, don’t hesitate to call him before your appointment.

Good Luck!

What do I do if I get girl pregnant and not married?
Hi my name is Steven and I got this girl pregnant nine months ago and I found out ne month into her pregnancy. We did have a DNA test three months into her pregnancy and I found out that it was my baby. We are not married at all. She is now nine months pregnant and the doctor said last week that she is due any day. she went into labor 3 hours ago and said to me that her water broke and that blood is starting to come out. I took her to the hospital and they are taking care of her now. they said she is ready to have the baby now and is fully dilated. She said she is going to have a natural painful childbirth with no drugs at all. What do I do now? I need answers quick. I am 16 years old today and she is 18 year old.

Michelle answers:

Well these days its really not a big deal if your not married, BUT you will need to step up and take care of the child… You are a little young I’m not sure if she could get into trouble since you are 16 and she is 18 but that is something that you are going to have to look into… Babies are truly wonderful you will fall in love the moment you meet them.. And to be honest with you if she will let you into the delivery room it would probably mean alot to her that you were there to share that moment with her… I was glad that I had my husband there….Congrats and good luck, everyhthing will be fine, just take each day as it comes……..

P.s. Im 24 I have a daughter that is 14 months old and I have another one on the way and I just got married two weeks ago we did it backwards as well 😉

Your Questions About Natural Pregnancy Induction

Paul asks…

Having trouble bonding with my daughter, has anyone else been through this? Long question?

With my son (first born) i loved him the minute he was born, natural birth, 8 hours from start to finish, everything about it was perfect. He was healthy and no problems. He is now almost 20 months old and he in my eyes is the most perfect boy ever, i look at him and i cant help but smile. even when he really gets to me he will do something totally cute the next minute and il totally forget about what hes done to pi** me off.

I got pregnant with my daughter (now 4 months) when my son was only 6 months old, she was not planned and we were only using condoms. As soon as i knew i was pregnant i had a gut feeling something wasnt right, throughout the whole pregnancy i felt great. All the scans showed that she was fine, no downs syndrome, nothing wrong. then i went for my midwife appointment at 36 weeks and my belly was only measuring 34 weeks so i was sent for a scan. She in fact was on the small side, she was only just measuring the acceptable limit (any smaller and i would have to have been hospitalized and monitored for the rest of my pregnancy) she was measuring 33 weeks and 4lb 5oz.

So i got referrered to hospital and had to go for scans and to have her heartbeat monitored every 2nd day (3 times a week). Found out my placenta was failing and i had low amniotic fluid which was causing her poor growth. then at 38 weeks 6 days while i was hooked up to all the machines a doctor came in and said to me “ok, we can do your induction this morning”. I knew i was going to be induced but i didnt know they just spring it on you like that. I went home and got my bags and went back to hospital and they started the induction. I hated it. I was in labour for 36 hours before i asked for an epidural, it was an epidural and get pumped full of drugs to help me contract or get a c section. My hormones (you know the feel good ones when you have a natural spontaneous birth) never turned up, i never felt that excitment that you feel when alol of a sudden you realise your in labour.

Anyway she was born 7lb 6oz. i got to hold her, then the midiwfe gave her a check and turns out they thought she didnt have an anus, well she ended up having one but it comes out her vagina, or they share the same hole, if you get me. She spent a night in the NICU and then we spent an extra 4 nights in hospital. She has had one operation so far and she has a colostomy bag, she is scheduled for her next one in the next 3 months. We named her Lyla roase elizabeth, i didnt particularly like the name, its pretty. But not what i wanted to name her, the whole pregnancy i had been calling her alfie, but no one (mum, dad, partners parents, grandparents) liked the name so partner refused to let me name her alfie rose elizabeth (he told me this while i was in labour, before that i was 100% sure her name would be alife) so he decided that lyla was a good name and we can call her that. I look at her and i see an alfie, weird i know because its aparently a ‘boys’ name, she suits lyla, but she is so an alfie that its not funny. When she was 3 weeks old i told my fiance i wanted to change her name because i didnt think lyla was the right name for her, he told me not to be stupid and that its a good name.

I breastfeed her and i play with her heaps but i just dont have the bond that i have with my son. I have been tested for post natal depression twice once at 6 weeks when i told my midwife my feelings, then again at 3 months to be re evaluated. Turns out i dont have it, just having problems bonding. I hardly ever have just 1 on 1 time with my daughter which may be part of the problem. She smiles at me, i can make her laugh and its great. But i dont get that warm fuzzy feeling i get with my son. I have even thought about switching to formula because i dont seem to be bonding, but then i thought if i stop breastfeeding i will loose what little bond i have.

Just wondering if anyone else felt like this and if it ever got better? Or any tips on what i can do, i so badly want the special bond that i have with my son, with my daughter

Michelle answers:

I think your issues have less to do with your daughter than with your relationships. First the baby was unplanned, then the doctors didn’t communicate very well about her condition and your induction, THEN your ‘partner’ DECIDED on a name that you didn’t agree with AND then he belittled your opinion about changing her name. This is on top of all the stress that any mother would have about the baby’s condition. It’s like you’ve lost control and it all stems from her birth which you have associated with negativity.

First off I think you should change your relationship status with your ‘Fiancee’. Why? Because obviously he doesn’t think much about you or your partnership if he feels that he can dictate some VERY important decision in YOUR life. I don’t care how much a man loves you…a child will always be about the mother.

I would also discuss your feelings about the induction and the pregnancy with your midwife or doctor. Try taking more control of the issue that was about you. Your daughter’s problems are hers but you had some problems with her birth and you need to acknowledge them.

Next I would join a support group of other mothers with babies/kids with a similar condition. This will not only help you deal with her issues but they will also always be there FOR YOU…be it relationships or doctors. I had very similar problems when my daughter was born with hospital stays, fetal monitoring, oxygen therapy, placental failure, and low birth weight (she was 4.5lbs at 39 weeks). I fought tooth and nail with every dang doctor in the city because I wasn’t getting a RIGHT answer. It made it so much harder because I had gotten pregnant with Isis just 7 weeks after I lost her older sister (37 weeks stillbirth) Violet. We had an emergency c-section 2 hours after I petitioned a senior doctor to examine me…after being told that she was too small and they wanted to wait 4 more weeks before considering a c-section.

I think I probably would have been the same way as you if I had ever actually safely and normally delivered a baby before Isis. But as it is we are connected at the hip. We still co-sleep at 24 months and take all of our naps together- I’d never let her leave the house without me if I could manage it. We are just at opposite sides of the spectrum- you don’t feel bonded and I can’t be without her.

Good luck my dear..

Lizzie asks…

RePost: Should I just go for the C-section? looking for some more responses?

Additional Details

Wow, so much info in that question i don’t know where to start! First, sorry about your first baby. That’s an awful thing to go through…. Well, all the problems that can happen during labour aren’t necessarily going to happen to you! They probably won’t 🙂 and if your baby is going to have a low birth weight anyway, i would think it would be better off for him/her to stay inside as long as possible. As for the birth, if it was me i would ask for a c-section but not early. But that’s me, i tried labour after being induced and i couldn’t do it. You could try doing it naturally if that’s what you wanted to do, and if it doesn’t go according to plan, you can have a c-section then?

Donald asks…

What natural induction method worked for you during pregnancy ?

We’ve all heard them all, sex, castor oil, tea, spice food, you name it.
Anyone ever tried these and then gone into labor? If so how many weeks were you?
What did you do? How long until it worked?
I don’t remember asking for any ” LOL” remarks.
Obviously, I know they don’t always work, and can’t be proven to be other than coincidence, and I don’t care. I was asking for stories by those who have tried it and it worked. I’m getting piton induced on my duedate anyway. I was just curious.
Thumbs down to you 😉
Pitocin*

Michelle answers:

Black Cohash. It’s an herb that midwives use that can start labor if you’re ready. I tried it and within eight to ten hrs of taking it I was contracting irregularly for several hours but my water broke. I don’t know if it actually caused it or if it’s a coincident. I also know they use nipple stimulation. If you roll your nipple around with your finger it causes your brain to release the hormone that causes your uterus to contract. Having sex works bc the ejaculate has prostiglandins in it that ripens the cervix and prepares it for labor. None of these will work, however, unless u are ready to go! Do not try these unless you are at least 39 wks

Carol asks…

Im getting induced tomorrow and very nervous?

I just want to hear other people experiences. This is my third pregnancy. The other 2 were all natural but since i have gestational diabetes im being induced tomorrow. What are the contractions like? Ive heard they are worse then a natural labor. Has anyone experienced natural labor and then had an induction too?

Michelle answers:

Okay so I’m a guy and don’t do the baby thing but I have two sisters who do and one of them has done both.

Her first baby was induced and she thought the contractions were harder but what it really was was once they got going they came faster. Try to not be nervous and think of it as though it is just natural chidlbirth. Remember to breathe and relax inbetween too and good luck to you and the new little one!

John asks…

Repost: Have you ever seen/heard of an anesthesiologist give an epidural during the middle of a contraction?

I’m watching some birth stories and one woman was in the middle of a contraction when the anesthesiologist stuck her during the contraction. I’ve been there myself with my oldest child. It’s HARD to hold still when you’re in that much pain. How is it so hard to wait until the contraction is over, you know?

On another note I’ve always wondered why most doctors feel like labor and delivery must be treated like a “sickness” rather than a natural process that is to unfold as it comes. I understand with high risk pregnancies or complications the purpose of medical interventions during labor and delivery. However, most pregnancies are normal and don’t *need* things like pitocin or c-sections or to be strapped to a bed and told not to move around to help labor pick up. Most doctors want to stick a woman with pitocin as soon as she walks in the door in labor and I just don’t see why.

Anyhow, what are your thoughts and feelings on such things? Do you think the hospitals lean way too much towards unnecessary interventions for normal, healthy pregnancies/labors?
I also just wanted to add that I’ve done labor and delivery both ways (medical interventions, that weren’t necessary but because it was my first child I didn’t know better, and without the unneeded interventions with my second child.) I’ve been in both situations, so I was wondering about you other moms. I plan on a birth center for my 3rd baby who I am currently carrying.

Michelle answers:

Doctors are trained to deal with illness, not normal life processes. OBs in particular are trained as surgeons, so they tend to view every labor as a possible surgery — and watch for signs that it will become one. Malpractice issues also play a role — doctors cannot be sued for doing ‘too much’, but CAN be sued for not doing enough.

One might also suggest that the more interventions the woman has, the more money the hospital (and the doctor) recieve. So they have a financial motivation for encouraging such things. Pitocin and c-sections also make life easier for the doctor … Like most of us they would rather NOT have to work at 2 a.m., so if giving pitocin (or doing a c-section) means that they can make it home for dinner by 6 p.m., that is very appealing.

(When I was pregnant there were basically 2 options for OBs in my community — a group practice of about 8 doctors, and one doctor working on his own. In the group practice women saw all the doctors, and were tended during labor by whichever doc happened to be on call that day. The on-call doctor spent 24 straight hours working in the hospital, delivering babies, seeing OB/GYN related cases in the ER, etc. I had several friends who opted for the solo-practice doc, thinking they’d get more ‘personal’ service. But, as it turned out EVERY person I knew who used the solo-practice doc had a c-section, while only a tiny handful of those who used the group did. It’s pretty obvious that Dr. Solo had a strong motivation to do c-sections .. He could work them around his office hours and his time at home. The group docs had no such motivation — they were at the hospital anyway, so had no reason to rush things.

Mary asks…

Rat pregnant, milk replacement (10 points)?

I have a pregnant rat (About 2 1/2 weeks along) and I am making an emergency kit available in case she doesn’t produce milk. However, I am on a budget because this was an ‘oops’ pregnancy. I went on vacation and a friend let the male and female rats play together. I have several questions.

1)What is the best milk replacement for baby rats?

2)What temperature?

3)How often do I feed them and how much? I own a 1cc needle-less syringe from previous Baytril needs.

4)I own a glass cage (ten gallon) what can I use as bedding. The bedding I have now is too gritty (All natural, corn made bedding.) and would hurt the babies I believe. I can use old shirts, cloth, ect. Would that suffice?

5)Any special care I need to give? Please explain in detail.

Michelle answers:

It’s very hard to save baby rats, so hopefully the mom does fine and you won’t have to worry about it. Worst case scenario.. KMR (Kitten Milk Replacer), Fresh Goat’s Milk, Enfamil (without iron), Esbilac (puppy formula) or Soyalac human formula can be used to feed orphaned rats. They will need to be fed every 2 hours. After each feeding you will have to massage and stimulate their bottoms with a warm damp cloth to encourage them to urinate and pass solid waste.

Betty asks…

What may be the symbolic meanings of those 9 forms of Mother Goddess Durga ?

Nine forms which we worship on 9 nights are:
1. Shaila Puthri, 2. Brahmacharini , 3.Chandraghanta, 4.Kooshmanda, 5.Skandamaatha, 6.Kaathyayini, 7.Kaalaraathri, 8.Mahaagowri, & 9.Siddhidaarhtri.

Are these 9 forms symbolically explain those nine type of changes; which are natural changes of a female like 1.child,2.infant,3.menses circle,4. pregnancy, 5.childbirth, 6.happy housewife, 7 menopause, 8.free from menses circle and, 9. blessing old mother???

Michelle answers:

The 9 Appellations of Durga – While I agree with your symbolic meaning mentioned above, I also understand that the nine nights have the following symbolic meanings too –

Nava – that also means ‘new’ – denotes ‘nine’ the number to which sages attach special significance. Hence, we have Nava-ratri (9 nights), Nava-graha (9 planets), and Nava-Durga (9 appellations)…. All the nine names of goddess are narrated in ‘Devi Kavacha’ of the ‘Chandipatha’ scripture.

(1) Shailaputri – Shailaputri literally means the daughter (putri) of the mountains (shaila). Variously known as Sati Bhavani, Parvati or Hemavati, the daughter of Hemavana – the king of the Himalayas, she is the first among Navadurgas. Her worship takes place on the first day of Navaratri – the nine divine nights. The embodiment of the power of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, she rides a bull and carries a trident and a lotus in her two hands.
(2) Bharmacharini- The is worshipped on the second day of Navaratri and is the second form of Mother Goddess. Bharmacharini means one who practices devout austerity. She enlightens us in the magnificent embodiment of Durga with great powers and divine grace. She holds a rosary in her right hand and a water utensil in her left hand. She is blissful and endows happiness, peace, prosperity and grace upon all devotees who worship her. Filled with bliss and happiness, she is the way to emancipation – Moksha.
(3) Chandra Ghanta – The third facet of Goddess Durga is ‘Chandraghanta’, who is worshipped on the third day of Navaratri, for peace, tranquility and prosperity in life. She has a ‘chandra’ or half moon in her forehead in the shape of a ‘ghanta’ or bell. That is why she is called ‘Chandraghanta’. She is charming, has a golden bright complexion and rides a lion. She has ten hands, three eyes and holds weapons in her hands. She is the apostle of bravery and possesses great strength to fight in the battle against demons.
(4) Kushmanda – Kushmanda is the fourth form of the mother goddess and is worshipped on the fourth day of Navaratri. The meaning of the name ‘Ku-shm-anda’ is as follows: ‘Ku’ = a little; ‘ushma’ = ‘warmth’; ‘anda’ = ‘the cosmic egg’. So she is considered the creator of the universe. The universe was no more than a void full of darkness, until her light spreads in all directions like rays from the sun. Often she is depicted as having eight or ten hands. She holds weapons, glitter, rosary, etc., in her hands, and she rides a lion.
(5) Skanda Mata – The fifth aspect of the Mother Durga is known as ‘Skanda Mata’ – the mother of Skanda or Lord Kartikeya, who was chosen by gods as their commander in chief in the war against the demons. She is worshipped on the fifth day of Navaratri. She is accompanied by the Lord Skanda in his infant form. Skanda Mata has four arms and three eyes, holds the infant Skanda in her right upper arm and a lotus in her right hand which is slightly raised upwards. The left arm is in pose to grant boons with grace and in left lower hand which is raised also holds a lotus. She has a bright complexion and often depicted as seated on a lotus.
(6) Katyayani – The sixth form of Mother Durga is known as ‘Katyayani’, who is worshipped on the six day of Navaratri. The legend behind her name goes thus: Once upon a time, there was a great sage called Kata, who had a son named Katya. Kata was very famous and renowned in the lineage of saints. He underwent long austerities and penance in order to receive the grace of the Mother Goddess. He wished to have a daughter in the form of a goddess. According to his wish and desire the Mother Goddess granted his request. Katyayani was born to Kata as an avatar of Durga.
(7) Kaal Ratri – This is the seventh form of Mother Durga and is worshipped on the seventh day of Navaratri. She has a dark complexion, disheveled hair and a fearlessness posture. A necklace flashing lightning adorns her neck. She has three eyes that shine bright and terrible flames emanate from her breath. Her vehicle is the donkey. Her raised right hand always seems to grant boons to all worshippers and all her right lower hand is in the pose of allaying fears. Her left upper hand holds a thorn-like weapon, made of iron and there is a dragger in the lower left hand. She is black like Goddess Kali and holds a sparkling sword in her right hand battle all evil. Her gesture of protection assures us of freedom from fear and troubles. So she is also known as ‘Shubhamkari’ – one who does good.
(8) Maha Gauri – She is worshipped on the eighth day of Navaratri. Her power is unfailing and instantly fruitful. As a result of her worship, all sins of past, present and future get washed away and devotees get purified in all aspects of life. Maha Gauri is intelligent, peaceful and calm. Due to her long austerities in the deep forests of the Himalayas, she developed a dark complexion. When Lord Shiva cleaned her with the wwater of the Ganges, her body regained its beauty and she came to be known as Maha Gauri, which mean extremely white. She wears white clothes, has four arms, and rides on a bull. Her right hand is in the pose of allaying fear and her right lower hand holds a trident. The left upper hand holds a ‘damaru’ (a small rattle drum) and the lower one is in the pose of granting boons to her devotees.
(9) Siddhidatri – Siddhidatri is the ninth form of Goddess. She is worshipped on the ninth day of Navaratri. Siddhidatri has supernatural healing powers. She has four arms and she is always in a blissful happy enchanting pose. She rides on the lion as her vehicle. She blesses all Gods, saints, yogis, tantrics and all devotees as a manifestation of the Mother Goddess. In ‘Devi Bhagvata Purana’ it is mentioned that Lord Shiva worshipped her and was blessed with all Siddhis (supernatural powers). By her blessings his half body became female and other half body male in the avatar of Ardhnarishvara.-

Your Questions About Natural Pregnancy Test

Robert asks…

Pregnancy after miscarriage?

I had a complete, natural miscarriage on february 9th. I had a positive pregnancy test 2 days ago (march 15th) plus mild symptoms. If i miscarried 4-5 weeks ago, about how far along would think I am?
i also havent had a period since my miscarriage either.
I have already made an OBGYN appointment. They tried to schedule me for when i was to be 10 weeks along bc apparently my doctor doesnt like to see second pregnancy patients until they are far enough along to hear the heartbeat. I negotiated with them to see me sooner due to the miscarriage but the soonest they gave me was at 8 weeks. When i got my HCG levels tested for the miscarriage he said the numbers were dropping tremendously and that within a couple weeks (max) they would be back down to zero. So i cant imagine the HCG levels detected on this new pregnancy test would be left over from the last failed pregnancy as i dont imagine they’d even be high enough to be detected. Maybe i should call the ob and demand to be seen sooner to have another blood test drawn? If he insists to wait, would my family doctor do the test?

Michelle answers:

I would say you would be about 3 1/2 or 4 weeks..the best way to tell is go to your OBGYN and when they do an ultrasound they can give you an estimate on how far along you are just make sure they know about the miscarriage and how you haven’t had a period since when ever your last one was.

David asks…

Very odd pregnancy test question but very important, please answer!!?

About a year and a half ago I got a false positive pregnancy test, about 5 days ago I got a faint one and today I got a faint one but a negative in between and I’m 7 days late for spotting and 5 days late for a regular flow and some how I just know I won’t be getting it, I guess maybe because I don’t have PMS maybe but I know I won’t get my period.. Could I have gotten false positives again? Will it show up positive on a blood test if those were positive? I’m getting blood test done tomorrow but I’m wondering. My fiance and I want a baby and we’ve tried for a good while and basically gave up after last month because of my fiance joined the military because he won’t leave for basic until june and doesn’t want to be gone while a baby is born, that said we still don’t use protect because we’ve never gotten pregnant and I am not supposed to be able to naturally due to scarring inside of me. I know its not stress because I’m finally stress free with everything working out perfectly lately. I want to be excited but I don’t want to be let down again either. And right now my fiance isn’t being supportive, he just wants me to forget it and says the negative was right and I need to get over it. I’m not entirely sure what I’m supposed to think right now, can anyone help me?

**I’m not nor was I ever on regular hormone drugs, I don’t like that stuff so I was taking natural supplements and quit.
I should have been more clear, I had a faint one 5 days ago, a negative yesterday, and a faint one today.

Michelle answers:

I’ve gotten a false postive before too, but the chance of it happening to you again let alone twice within the same day are very slim. You may have just tested to soon in between them which was cause for the negative. I’d wait another day or two and then test first thing int he morning.

Sandy asks…

No period for 2 weeks. Pregnancy symptoms. Negative test? (semi-long)?

So, We’ve been trying to conceive and so far, I don’t think we are having any luck 🙁
I hope I’m just being cynical, haha.

My period is now 15 days late. I tested a few weeks ago at the doctors office (which was obviously too early because it would have not even been a week after conception) and I also tested 2 days ago. Both were negative .
The test from 2 days ago, I might have messed up. I read the instructions and it said to not get urine in the result window, and I accidentally did. The negative line was VERY faint.
I hope it’s a false neg.

Anyways, I thought my period had finally regulated because it was regular for about 5 months (a 32 day cycle). Then this month, I don’t know what’s going on. I’ve been eating healthy, and I haven’t been stressed at all. I don’t have thyroid problems or PCOS.

The first day of my last period was on November 3rd.
I’m having similar symptoms of pregnancy: random waves of Nausea with occasional vomiting (It’s worse in the morning), fatigue, Headaches, Dizziness, back pain, and occasional irritability. I have had a lot of watery discharge (sorry if thats tmi) My breasts looks swollen and I’ve noticed a few blue veins in my areolas that I don’t believe were there before. I haven’t had ANY bleeding. I think I may have had very light brown spotting, but I only seen it once and it was 4 days after my missed period. Idk if it would show that late if it WERE implantation bleeding.

I think I’m going to test again in a week.

If I’m not pregnant, what natural ways could I help keep my cycle regular? I know eating healthy helps. What about taking a prenatal vitamin instead of a regular vitamin? Are there any foods that boost fertility?

How would I tell my gynecologist I’d be interested in taking Clomid or something?
All information is greatly appreciated <3
I'm just waiting until after Christmas, because if it's negative, I'm gonna be quite depressed. I don't wanna ruin my or my fiance's holiday spirit.

Michelle answers:

If you have regular cycles usually you do not need clomid. Clomid makes you ovulate, it sounds like you are ovulating.

If you are 15 days late you do not need to wait AT ALL to take another test. If you think the other one was wrong take another one today. (doesnt have to be in the morning at this point ANY time in the day would show a positive). Take one today!

No period for 2 weeks. Pregnancy symptoms. Negative test?

So, We’ve been trying to conceive and so far, I don’t think we are having any luck 🙁
I hope I’m just being cynical, haha.

My period is now 14 days late. I tested a few weeks ago at the doctors office (which was obviously too early because it would have not even been a week after conception) and I also tested 2 days ago. Both were negative
