Your Questions About Food Network

Nancy asks…

Food network: box cake mix to taste homemade. ” The secret life of cake” episode a few years ago.

The food network hosted a show, ” The secret life of cake” They said how to make a box cake taste like it was homemade. It used eggs, butter, & a 3rd ingrediant that I don’t remember. I want to say OIL. You are sopposed to use these instead of the way the box says to do it. I know for sure the ingriant is NOT Pudding. It is not that kind of cake. I belive the mix was just plain yellow.

Michelle answers:

Maybe it was sour cream? I’m a cake decorator. All my cakes start with a box. I usually add 1 Cup of Flour, 1 Cup of Sugar, 1 Cup of Butter, 1 Cup Sour Cream, 3 eggs and 1/3 Cup water. The cakes always come out great. I know a lot of Cake Decorators and some bakery’s use this recipe. I know you said it had 3 ingredients. But maybe it had a little more. I hope I helped somewhat.

Lizzie asks…

Food Network vegetable pasta?

I watched the food network the other day and they had a recipe for roasted vegetables and bow-tie pasta. It looked really good but I don’t remember what spices they put on the vegetables. I looked all over there web-site but i can not find the recipe. Could anyone please give me suggestions on what to use.

Michelle answers:

Simply Roasted Pasta

Serves 2

Nothing could be simpler than “dry” roasting a bunch of asparagus in olive oil and sea salt, a few roma tomatoes and a head of garlic then mixing all these roasted vegetables with some cooked orecchini for a light and living Sunday Supper.
The “dry” roasting technique, which uses just a little olive oil and sea salt, concentrates the natural flavor of the vegetables.

For garlic addicts, puree the roasted garlic with a little hot chicken broth to coat the pasta and roasted vegetables. If you don’t want the all-round flavor of roasted garlic, then mash a few cloves of roasted garlic and toss them into the pasta as accents. You can also use the roasted cloves as a spread on bread and mix them into a salad dressing to accompany this pasta dish.

Roasting Asparagus (and other vegetables):
Wash bunch of asparagus and cut off the woody stem end. If you have time and want to create a luxurious dish, then you can peel the asparagus.

(If you are using other vegetables such as pencil-thin carrots, zucchini, green onions and bulb fennel also roast well, then cut them into roughly the same diameter as the asparagus.)

Preheat oven to 400 – 425°. Arrange the asparagus and other vegetables snuggly in one large (or 2 small) flat roasting pans (I prefer to use an oven-proof ceramic dish so the vegetables don’t stick and burn on the bottom.) Drizzle lightly with olive oil and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.

Roast the vegetables, turning often until they are cooked. This should take about 10 minutes, but some types of vegetables may take longer. When they are done, remove them from the oven and set aside until ready to use.

Roasting the Roma Tomatoes:
Preheat the oven to 450°. Line a flat baking sheet (with sides) with parchment paper or foil. Cut a very thin slice off the top of each tomato then cut it in half, lengthwise. Arrange the tomato halves on the baking sheet and roast them until the skins begin to shrivel and pull away (pop up) from the flesh.

Remove from the oven and pluck the skins off. Put the tomato flesh and cooking juices into a bowl, roughly chop (as necessary) and set aside until ready to use.

Roasting the Garlic:
Cut the very top end off the head of garlic, just enough to expose all of the cloves. Drizzle with olive oil. Wrap loosely in aluminum foil and roast in a 250 – 300° oven for about 30-40 minutes. The garlic is done when the cloves are as soft as mashed potatoes and a light golden brown. (Overcooking or cooking at too high a temperature will cause the garlic cloves caramelize and harden. Undercooking will leave them rasty and raw tasting. Garlic, when properly roasted, has a sweet and succulent flavor, nothing likes it aggressive raw character.)

When the garlic is done, remove from the oven and let it cool in the foil until ready to use. Using small fork or similar narrow tool (I found a fondue fork or crab fork is ideal for this job), remove the individual cloves from their skins. If you intend to use the cloves whole, then remove them carefully. If you will be pureeing them, then there is no need to be too careful.
Final Assembly:

Cook the orecchini, drain and return to the cooking pan.

Cut the roasted vegetables into bit size pieces and mix into the cooked pasta. Roughly cut up the tomatoes and add them to the pasta pan.

Puree (or mash) the roasted garlic with ¼ cup hot chicken broth and mix it into the pasta pan.Heat slowly, stirring continuously until it is thoroughly hot.

Serve in warm bouillabaisse bowls accompanied by a green salad dressed with a roasted garlic vinaigrette.

Roasted Garlic Vinaigrette: A vinaigrette made with roasted garlic has a surprisingly sweet flavor. It can be used as a dressing for salads, any steamed vegetables or plain asparagus served as a first course:

1. Mash 1-2 cloves of roasted garlic in a small bowl.
2. Gradually add 1 TBS balsamic vinegar.
3. After the vinegar and garlic have been blended thoroughly, gradually whisk in 3 TBS olive oil with a fork.
———–

Pasta & Roasted Vegetables
(serves 4)

1 lb linguine
1 cup chicken stock
10 lg cloves garlic, cut in half
2 tbsp balsamic vinegar
1 lb cherry tomatoes, cut in half
1 lb asparagus, cut into 2″ lengths
1/2 lb zucchini cut into 2″ pieces
1/2 lb summer squash cut into 2″ pieces
1 large red bell pepper, cut into chunks
8 med scallions, white parts only, cut into 2″ lengths
1 tbsp olive oil
salt and ground black pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 450 degrees.

In a small saucepan, combine garlic and stock. Bring to a boil; reduce heat to low and simmer, covered, for 15 to 20 minutes or until tender. Place in a blender or food processor along with vinegar, and puree until smooth. Return to the saucepan and keep warm over low heat.

In a large bowl, combine tomatoes, asparagus, zucchini, summer squash, bell peppers, and scallions. Drizzle oil over the top, season with salt and pepper and toss to coat well. Place on a baking sheet and roast, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes or until tender.

In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook linguine for 6 to 8 minutes, or until tender but firm. Drain and place in a large serving bowl. Toss with the roasted vegetables and garlic puree. Season with salt and pepper and serve immediately.

Michelle answers:

What browser are you? I think you may have install some malicious software that automatically set or change your browser setting, but I’m familiar with three browser that I can help you change the homepage:

Internet Explorer 9: Click on an icon that look like a screw thing at the upper right end of the browser, click on it and select Internet Option > General at the top but under the General tab there would a a text box where you can change the homepage, try put in a homepage you want to change to for example: www.microsoft.com and click OK, and it’s done!

Mozilla Firefox 3.6: Similar to IE9 but instead of the icon it’s in the Tools click it and select Option at the bottom of the drop down, then it will pop the similar window like IE9, with same General tab name and at the homepage’s text box put it www.microsoft.com, and click on OK, and it’s done!

Google Chrome 11: Now also similar to IE9 instead of a circle screw thing it’s a screw driver icon click it and click on Options and it will open a new tab on your browser (it will also auto switch to that tab too) at the Home Page: put in www.microsoft.com and it will take effect after you close the tab.

*** Refresh the page or restart the browser to see the effect.

Your Questions About Food Network

Michael asks…

Food Network playing with food What is this all about with starving children in the world?

I’m watching “The Food Network” and they are making a giant popcorn Mickey Mouse for a Guinness record. Why are we still playing with food with all the starving children in this country and others around the world. I don’t understand. The current record almost 17 feet high. Why do we have a current record???? They are trying to make a 20 ft Mickey.

When are we going to stop this BS? Are we so arrogant that we can waste food on this type of entertainment.

Its unexceptable when people are dying from starvation.
I understand we waste food everyday, food that could feed the world, its the arrogants that is upsetting about this show……. We are pigs and shows like this just show how much of pigs we are…

Michelle answers:

No one is going hungry in third-world countries because people waste food in the industrialized countries.

We throw away enough food in the US in one day to feed many nations for a year. Waste is tragic, but reducing it would not feed other people. Packaging up a giant Mickey’s head-worth of popcorn and shipping it to the hungry would not accomplish anything.

Our waste and their hunger are two separate issues that only superficially appear linked.

Sort of like the problem of inequal distribution of wealth would not be solved by just cutting the salaries of the wealthy.

Ruth asks…

Who are the women chefs on the food network show?

I was told I look like one of them…but I don’t watch the food network.
I have dark, curly hair… and its not rachel ray.
Thanks!

Michelle answers:

The female chefs that are on Food Network (with dark curly hair) include Giada De Laurentiis, Alex Guarnaschelli, Elie Krieger (short hair), and (not truly a chef but on the network) Nigella Lawson

If you search them at www.foodnetwork.com there are plenty of photos of each of them.

Linda asks…

Could I send a tape into Food Network?

They havent started their new season of The Next Food Network Star yet and I am not quite 18 soooo do you think I could?

I have wanted a cooking show basically all my life and I want it to be BY a teenager, directed mostly towards teenagers.

Michelle answers:

Check their web site. There is a place you can send to, but you really have to look for it because it’s well hidden… But it IS there, just keep looking.

Help with Algebra 2? Something like Funbrain.com?

I have to make up my second semester of Algebra 2 for summer school, and I’m running out of time. I need to study some of the stuff ahead of time at home, and then go and pass pre-tests at summer school. Could anyone suggest a website to help me with 10th grade math? Funbrain.com is only for K-8. Your Questions About Facebook

Joseph asks…

On the new Facebook profiles, is it still possible to hide your tagged pics from others?

I have the old Facebook profile, but I’ve made it so that my tagged pictures aren’t posted on my wall and people can’t see them by going through my albums. I do this because I have LOTS of different people on Facebook (childhood friends, people from many different countries I grew up in, teachers, relatives, acquaintances).

On the new profile, your tagged pictures are shown at the top, below your school, birthday, and employer. Would this change make my tagged pictures visible? Are the privacy settings any different?

Michelle answers:

Hello! This recently has become a very common question, and for good reason. Fortunately, Facebook has taken this into consideration when designing the updated profile.

After deciding to switch to the new design, ALL of your privacy settings remain the same – including those associated with your photos. What this means in relation to the new feature of the five tagged photos being showcased on your profile page is that only those who you allow to view your tagged photos will be able to see them. If you have settings that prohibit certain people viewing tagged photos, the photos featured will instead be replaced by the album pictures that you allow to be public instead. In the case of your settings reflecting a choice of not allowing ANYONE to see your tag photos, the same scenario (album photos being featured) applies to EVERYONE.

In reference to your question about the privacy settings, Facebook has made it completely clear that their current user privacy preferences were unaffected in this change.

Hope this helps! 🙂

Donna asks…

How do you send your Facebook statuses to twitter?

I want to send my Facebook statuses to twitter but not the other way around. That is, I do not want my tweets going to my Facebook account but I want my Facebook statuses going to my twitter. Any help? Thanks.

Michelle answers:

I’m not sure if you can do that, but if you can I would check on Facebook or Twitter and see if they have a widget for it. It usually will work that ways. Also, try shortcuts. I hope this helps you out.

Charles asks…

How long does it take Facebook to delete a reported group?

There’s this group where people steal photos from other’s personal facebooks without permission and bash their appearances and personalities. I don’t see why this should be allowed because it breaks Facebook rules and it’s cyber bullying. I reported the group but I don’t know if Facebook will take the time to respond to the matter.

Has anyone ever reported something to Facebook? Did they delete it? How long did it take?

Michelle answers:

They won’t delete it. They know you are just being a cry baby about it.

Michael asks…

How to contact Facebook about innapropriate photos and comments?

Somebody I know just committed suicide because he was being bullied in school. One of his friends made a page on Facebook to honor him and people are making false accounts and posting racist, insulting comments. They’re also posting innapropriate photos and gory images of dead people, etc. Also they’re making references to Nazism and the Ku Klux Klan. A lot of people I know are really upset by this, and we’ve tried reporting the page and the people but Facebook isn’t doing anything. It’s really awful what people are writing. What can we do?

Michelle answers:

The administrator of the account can block and remove comments from anyone

Your Questions About Fox News

Nancy asks…

Can liberals create a propaganda tool similar to Fox News?

CNN, NPR and so on reports news from the liberal point of view but Fox News carefully selects news to bash liberals. We liberals should have a similar TV channel that chooses news only from the point of view of how it can hurt conservatives. Do you agree?

Michelle answers:

We could, but we don’t want to.

We prefer FACTS.

If you lay down with pigs you’ll just get dirty and the pigs will love it!

We’re better than that….

Michael asks…

Has Fox News Become So Powerful That It is Dictating the Agenda for the Republican Party?

Some people think that Fox News is just an arm of the Republican Party but I think that editorial board of Fox News is dictating the agenda for the Republicans. The TV network generates the agenda, not the party.

Michelle answers:

The media and our political party are both very corrupted. It seems that all they do is fight each other rather than helping us out

Daniel asks…

How does one start an analytical essay on Fox News and biased journalism?

I usually am stellar in writing essays, but journalism is just… not my thing.

I read the whole chapter on journalism,
I know of the techniques having been in a journalism class in high school,

This essay criticized journalistic bias, especially in Fox News. I have quotes, ideas of how I want my paper to be but the intro is just a blank piece in my head. Do I start out with how hard it is for media to be unbiased, or an

UGH!
*criticizes*

Michelle answers:

In your Journalistic approach you should convey the non-bias opinion and cite most of the time Fox news covered more different breaking news stories than all the other networks. However if you get liberal oriented you will make a complete donkey of yourself and can not be a complete journalist kind of like a Comedian with no punch line if you get what I mean, So by now you know what a Journalistic approach view all options, don’t let sympathy, money, or Charm influence any part of your opinion, and I guarantee you you will win the majority of the debates and Never let them see you sweat! Had to throw that in.

William asks…

Why does Fox News the only news organization that reports facts?

All other news organizations report opinion and not facts while Fox News reports facts. Just listen how all the other organizations report how great Obama is when if you sit and think about what Obama is doing that he is a complete idiot. Fox states the facts that he is doing more harm to the country but no other organization will report this.

Fox news attacks and takes down anyone who disagrees with them

Your Questions About Firefox

Ruth asks…

How do I set my Firefox 3 address bar to go directly to a site, rather than going through google?

My laptop is running the same version of Firefox and when I type queries into the address bar, it goes straight to a website, yet when I do such on my desktop, it will run through Google.
I tried tweaking the about:config settings, but that didn’t help.

Michelle answers:

Not sure, if this what u meant u may try the reffered blog link

for starter, by default, if u type a query in firefox address bar, it uses google’s “i am feeling lucky” feature to go to a website, but u can disable this by using about:config. At about:config, in the filter box, type keywords.url, only one entry will show up. Double click on that entry and u will get a popup marked, ‘enter a string’. Copy the string value and paste it in a notepad for if latter on u decide to use it. Delet the string value from the popup window press ok and restart firefox. See if its working as u wanted! U can follow original authors website also.

Joseph asks…

How can you tell which firefox window is hogging up the cpu?

Firefox browser often starts consuming 100% of the processor time slowing down the computer. Closing windows until you find the right window helps. Is there any way to tell which window it is that is using up the cpu?

Michelle answers:

Maybe you should try reinstalling Firefox

Alternatively you could download and run the free ‘Process Lasso’ which throttles back any process which is trying to hog all the CPU resource. It also keeps a log of its actions so you should be able to see which process was the culprit.

How do I uninstall firefox 11 and go back to firefox 10?

I tried a system restore but that didnt work. Firefox 11 dosent work with roboform which I need to use daily.

How do I download firefox 10 and get rid of version 11?

Michelle answers:

Hi,
Go to the Roboform site & check for any updates.

The procedure, if needed, is to back-up your profile first…
Go to, http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/10.0.2/win32/en-US/
if this suits your specs & D/L it.
Then un-install Firefox v11.
(Your “stuff” will not be touched.)

Run the installer.
It will automagically pick up your profile.

Easy peasy.

& a System Restore will not help.

At White House, Biden’s Expletive Caught on Open Mic

By DAVID M. HERSZENHORN

Beyond the ebullient atmosphere, shout-outs and cheers at the White House signing ceremony of the health-care bill, there’s another moment that is being rewound and played again and again: Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s overheard, overly effusive aside to President Obama.

At the end of his introduction of the president, Mr. Biden, who is well known for ad-libbing to the point of getting him in a little trouble, turned to Mr. Obama, embraced him and elaborated on the historic nature of the day.

“Mr. President, this is a big … deal,” he said, adding an adjective between big and deal, that begins with ‘f.’

Accurate as he may have been, Mr. Biden was also on an open microphone. And his remarks sent the media flock abuzzing.

For whatever reason, Fox News is claiming boasting rights that it was the first to report Mr. Biden’s use of the expletive on air.

http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/03/23/at-white-house-bidens-expletive-caught-on-open-mic/?hp

Michelle answers:

Yes, I love it!…I kept hearing about this & wondering what the big deal was & then I realized, I must have been in shock cause suddenly I was like OMG This IS a big (expressive word) DEAL!!!!! I think I have been trying so hard to explain to my rich but ignorant republican friends why they should not take the guns out & that their ignorant friends are wrong, even though they have done well in business doesn’t mean they are right about the negative info. They are giving them. So YES, it is a BIG (oh, I want to say it so bad, thank you Joe for saying it for us all) DEAL…..thanks for helping me to help my ignorant but actually nice rep. Friends, who I am going to explain this too.

Steven asks…

Why is the Obama admin violating the 1st amendment’s freedom of the press by shutting out fox news?

From the pool interview? The first amendment provided freedom of the press so that opposing views cannot be shut out and shut down by the government, yet Obama is doing just that. Even his top advisor David Axelrod is saying that Fox is “not a real news organization”…. which is completely ridiculous. Why is Obama spitting on the constitution like this?

Seems like all totalitarian regimes follow the same patterns, one of the first things they do is shut down any press that is not friendly to them….

http://www.thefoxnation.com/politics/2009/10/23/wh-tries-ban-fox-news-pool-interview
oh yeah, how many interviews has Obama done on Fox?
In fact, they have been shut out of the process, never before has an administration excluded a major network from a pool interview like this…. it’s absurd! What if Bush had excluded MSNBC from a pool interview, you liberals would go NUTS!!!

Michelle answers:

For the same reason it shuts anyone out and attacks if they disagree. Anyone who doesn’t see that is not paying attention.
