James asks…

Where do you find information on Home Schooling, based on the American curriculum?

My children attend school here in Canada, but I would like to supplement their education, by home schooling them with an American based curriculum. Any ideas on where to find this, or does anyone have any advice on home schooling?
As a side note, I do plan on spending many months travelling throughout the US for work and will bring my children with me. Also hope to move to the States and eventually enroll my kids in school there. Thanks!!

Michelle answers:

America doesn’t really have one curriculum. Each State is different, and even within the same state, each district is a little different.

In addition, most states do NOT require homeschoolers to follow exactly what the Public School does.

However, I’d be happy to suggest some homeschooling resources.

For math I like Horizons for K-6 and Teaching Textbooks for 7-12th.
Horizons, (note that the worksheet packets are not necessary, just the books):

Teaching TExtbooks:

For language arts there are many great things out there, too many to list. I suggest something with lots of literature once the children are reading well. Hewitt homeschooling has some great material.

For science I like the “Christian Kids Explore…” series. Though I don’t know if you are a Christian, and if you aren’t you might not like it too much.

For History I like “The Mystery of History”:

I also like to vary what I use; for example next year my studies will be based on a Unit Study called “Galloping the Globe”.

There are many wonderful programs available, I wish you luck in finding the best one for your family.

Your Questions About Fafsa

Mary asks…

How long is fafsa good for?

I have fafsa. I get $5,550 renewed each semester for school. But for how many semesters? Does it only cover a bachelors or can I go to school as long as I want & still get renewed everyyy semester?
As long as i re-apply every time they require it, will i still get it?

Michelle answers:

The FAFSA can be filled out every year, but depending on the type of aid you receive, you may be eligible for a certain dollar amount (such as in loans) or a time limit (such as Pell Grant, which only covers 4 years).

But you need to keep in mind that the higher up you go, the more loans and less of other types of aid become available to you. This is normally the case, and sometimes you can subsidize this with state aid and private aid.

Donald asks…

Any other financial aids or guaranteed scholarships besides fafsa?

I have already completed my fafsa, not eligable for cal grant because my gpa is a 2.5, and desperatly need more financial aid. I need more need based scholarships, my mother’s a single parent with a very low income.

Michelle answers:

Clarification: The FAFSA (Free Application For Student Aid) is just an application. FAFSA does not make any offers of financial aid. The inforfrom your FAFSA application is what the college/univ. Financial aid staff at the schools to which you have applied use to help them determine what amount and form (loans, scholarships, grants) of financial aid they will offer you.

1. If you have heard from the colleges/universities to which you have applied regarding the amount and type of financial aid they are offering you, I recommend you talk (via telephone or in-person) with the financial aid advisers at those schools and ask about any other financial aid options they can recommend.

2. For many scholarships for Fall 2011, for which you might be able to apply, the application deadlines have passed, unfortunately.

3. This is a link to a March 2011 article from the well-respected US News and World Report listing some scholarships with application deadlines that may not have passed:
http://www.usnews.com/education/blogs/the-scholarship-coach/2011/03/31/8-scholarships-for-procrastinators-and-overachievers

4. You may also be able to find some scholarships for which you can apply, and for which the application deadline has not passed, by using the Scholarship Search database of the well-respected College Board:
http://apps.collegeboard.com/cbsearch_ss/welcome.jsp
If you wish to save your search strategy and return to it later, you can register (for free) without worry of receiving a lot of spam messages.

5. Like my local public library, your public library may subscribe to a database that you can access from your home computer through the library web pages, with your valid library card: GrantSelect.
I suggest you telephone your local public library and ask if it subscribes to the GrantSelect database and how you can access it.

Keep in mind that many, many, many students are looking for and applying for scholarships and grants. Being awarded one, is getting more difficult. Also, sometimes the amounts awarded are smaller than expected (or desired.) There is only so much money in the form of financial aid to go around. The more people who apply and qualify often means smaller award amounts.

Best wishes

Nancy asks…

If you work full time and are receiving fafsa financial aid will it drasticly change the EFC?

If you work full time and are receiving fafsa financial aid will it drasticly change the EFC? If you weren’t working previously and started to recieve the benefits, will it drastically change the EFC?

Michelle answers:

Hi. If you begin working Full time, it will just depend on how much money you make that year before you file your tax returns. Your EFC will go up based on the fact that you have made more money. It will not change for the current school year though, just when you renew you FAFSA. Hope this helped!

Robert asks…

What are some other federal grants that I can receive for college besides FAFSA?

I applied for FAFSA but I live in North Carolina and I plan to attend Austin Community College in Texas.

I am afraid that I won’t have the money I need to make it through the year. I am a low-income student and I graduated in 2009. I live with my mom and she is broke. Who can help me?

Michelle answers:

The only “federal” aid available is through FAFSA. That is the application used to apply for all federal aid. Any other website claiming to offer federal aid is a scam and you should absolutely not ever list your social security number or other personal info on any of these websites. Your school itself may offer additional aid but community colleges usually do not offer much. Community colleges are hardly ever worth the out of state tuition. Either choose a different school that is able to give you more aid or stay in North Carolina to get lower tuition.

Your Questions About Facebook

Thomas asks…

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using facebook ?

I hear many people using facebook. So,I wanted to know whether it is good or bad to use facebook.
Thanks for all in advance for helping me.

Michelle answers:

Hi,

the advantages of using facebook are many, as are the disadvantages:

Advantages:

its free

you can keep a track of how your friends are and let them know how you are

you can organise events

you can message your friends and family easily and quickly

you can get ideas from people

you can find people new and interesting people

Disadvantages:

if you have the wrong settings, anyone can view your information and therefore know things like your address, telephone number etc.

If someone else gains access to your account you may be “facebook raped” which means that the person accessing your account may put up stuff that isn’t true for everyone to see, stuff about you being gay or hating someone you don’t are examples

some people are so addicted to facebook that they don’t talk to people in real life, their entire lives now consist around facebook.

Some people put their entire lives on facebook and end up regretting it, burglars have been known to use facebook as a way of telling when people will be out of their houses because so many people put up stuff like “going on holiday, see you all in a week” and if your profile is viewable by everyone, people then know that you will be out of the house for a week

so as you can see there are upsides and downsides to using facebook, it all depends on what you intend on using it for, hope this helped

Thanks,

Laura asks…

Facebook is blocked on my computer. I need a way to update my status. I do not have a mobile phone. Can you help? I am desperate.

Your Questions About Forever 21

Thomas asks…

Can I return a shirt to Forever 21 if I took the tags off?

I (stupidly) ripped the tags off of a Forever 21 t-shirt before deciding to keep it and now want to return it. I still have the tags, they’re just not attached, and I still have the reciept. Will they take it?

Michelle answers:

Tell them u accidentallyripped it off, show them the tags, show the rreceipt they will probably let u 🙂

Jenny asks…

What kind of clothing i can get at forever 21?

Whenever I go to forever 21 I have no idea what to get . Need some help and style tips please ! 🙂

Michelle answers:

Go online first and scope out what you like on the website. Then you can go into the store and look for the clothes from the website to try on, while also picking up the few things that you might see in the store that you like. That way you have a focus of what to look for when you go into the store, and you won’t get overwhelmed by all of the clothes.

Sharon asks…

Besides Forever 21 where can I find cute clothes for a teen girl that are affordable? What are good jean brands?

I love the style of forever 21, but almost everything I buy from there falls apart cause it’s so cheap.

I also want to buy new jeans. I had been into Citizens for Humanity but they’re too expensive. I’m 17, just 5’3 and really thin. I’d like jeans that somehow make me seem taller, lol.

where do you shop the most?

Michelle answers:

Skinny jeans can emphasize your long skinny legs.
And rue 21, kohls, aeropostal can sometimes have good sales

Mary asks…

What is the playlist for forever 21 august 2011?

i was at forever 21 a couple days ago and they played this song, i really liked it but i forgot the lyrics when i got home, so any help?

Michelle answers:

Go back to Forever 21.. And ask them what’s the playlist

Ruth asks…

What are good websites for a 5yr old boy to go to?

I’m looking for a child friendly website for my 5yr old boy to play on. Any suggestions?

Michelle answers:

My son really liked Nickjr.com and playhousedisney.com
if you want it to be educational, try funbrain.com
it has a lot of math, and phonics games for all ages.

Sandy asks…

What are some good books, or even a series of books, for a 7 year old boy to enjoy?

We have been reading Goosebumps but we are looking for something different now. Maybe something funny or even adventurous. Thanks.

Michelle answers:

I remember reading many of Roald Dahl’s books at that age – they’re a bit old, but they’re very imaginative and I think they’re just right for a 7-year-old. My personal favorites from his books were Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, The Witches, The BFG, and Matilda.

I also recommend the Captain Underpants series by Dav Pilkey. As a warning, there are examples of bad grammar/spelling in the comic books featured inside the novels, but they’re excellent books anyway and are great for a boy that age.

The Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osbourne is another good choice. The newer Merlin Missions books are fitting for his age, although some of the older books might be a bit below his level. Also, the research guides also written by Osbourne regarding topics featured in the books are educational and good reads.

The Hank Zipzer series by Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver were also ones I read when I was 7. I still pick them up sometimes to read – they’re very well-written. And I read the Encyclopedia Brown series by Donald J. Sobol when I was that age as well, so both of those are good choices too.

I recall reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney when I was maybe 8 or 9 years old online at funbrain.com, so that might also be a good choice. It’s a very funny novel.

The Animorphs series by K.A Applegate might be a little above his reading level (I’m not sure; I’ve never read it myself although I’ve heard good things about it) but at any rate you can help him with any words he doesn’t know or anything. The same goes for A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket, the Percy Jackson and the Olympians Series by Rick Riordan, and the Harry Potter series by J.K Rowlilng – I’ve read all three series I mentioned previously, and they’re very good, although probably a bit above his reading level.

Good luck!

Your Questions About Fox News

George asks…

How much roughly does Fox News pay in fines for airing propaganda and false information?

I know that Republican Mac Thornberry from Texas was pushing to neutralize the Smith-Mundt Act of 1948 that had been passed to protect U.S. audiences from our own government’s misinformation campaigns which is funneled from the Republicans in Washington directly to Fox News.

EXAMPLE of FOX NEWS Propaganda techniques

1. Panic Mongering. This goes one step beyond simple fear mongering. With panic mongering, there is never a break from the fear. The idea is to terrify and terrorize the audience during every waking moment.

2. Character Assassination/Ad Hominem. Fox does not like to waste time debating the idea. Instead, they prefer a quicker route to dispensing with their opponents: go after the person’s credibility, motives, intelligence, character, or, if necessary, sanity.

3. Projection/Flipping. This one is frustrating for the viewer who is trying to actually follow the argument. It involves taking whatever underhanded tactic you’re using and then accusing your opponent of doing it to you first.

4. Rewriting History. This is another way of saying that propagandists make the facts fit their worldview. The Downing Street Memos on the Iraq war were a classic example of this on a massive scale, but it happens daily and over smaller issues as well.

5. Scapegoating/Othering. This works best when people feel insecure or scared. It’s technically a form of both fear mongering and diversion, but it is so pervasive that it deserves its own category.

6. Conflating Violence With Power and Opposition to Violence With Weakness.

7. Bullying. This is a favorite technique of several Fox commentators. That it continues to be employed demonstrates that it seems to have some efficacy. Bullying and yelling works best on people who come to the conversation with a lack of confidence, either in themselves or their grasp of the subject being discussed.

8. Confusion. As with the preceding technique, this one works best on an audience that is less confident and self-possessed. The idea is to deliberately confuse the argument, but insist that the logic is airtight and imply that anyone who disagrees is either too dumb or too fanatical to follow along.

9. Populism. This is especially popular in election years. The speakers identifies themselves as one of “the people” and the target of their ire as an enemy of the people. The opponent is always “elitist” or a “bureaucrat” or a “government insider” or some other category that is not the people.

10. Invoking the Christian God. This is similar to othering and populism. With morality politics, the idea is to declare yourself and your allies as patriots, Christians and “real Americans” (those are inseparable categories in this line of thinking) and anyone who challenges them as not. Basically, God loves Fox and Republicans and America. And hates taxes and anyone who doesn’t love those other three things.

11. Saturation. There are three components to effective saturation: being repetitive, being ubiquitous and being consistent. The message must be repeated cover and over, it must be everywhere and it must be shared across commentators: e.g. “Saddam has WMD.”

12. Disparaging Education. There is an emerging and disturbing lack of reverence for education and intellectualism in many mainstream media discourses. In fact, in some circles (e.g. Fox), higher education is often disparaged as elitist.

http://truth-out.org/news/item/1964:fourteen-propaganda-techniques-foxnews-uses-to-brainwash-americans

Michelle answers:

Quite a few lawsuits against FOX currently! Many of them are substantial and could be the End of FOX News. They have a grand pit of lawyers however so who knows but I think all of the lying and the propaganda and sensationalism and poor, poor journalism is catching up to them finally.

What they might be forced to do is change the name and retract the term ‘NEWS’ because that’s where they get intro trouble because so much of it is pure bullsh*t.

At the end of the day though most people no longer take them seriously. I think it’s almost a given now not to ever trust in the information from FOX because it’s simply a joke.

Donald asks…

How come Everything FOX NEWS accuses Obama of turns out not to be True?

The fox news network has charged The Obama Admin with many things over the years, from Accusing him of being responsible for various deaths.. To Corruption, many of these things turned into invesitgations like ” Fast and Furious”, only problem is everything they accuse him of never turns out to be true, and the Fox News acts like the fact that their conspiracies were proven wrong doesn’t matter.. This network said for 4 years that Eric Holder will be behind bars, the part that is always left out of their Hate stories for Eric Holder is that it was a Bush program .. Which was designed and set in play by the Bush admin.. Why do they always leave out that part

Now the network is doing it again with Benghazi… Should this matter? Or should cable networks be allowed to convict someone on National tv and not have to clear up all the misinformation they spread?

Michelle answers:

They said his wife looks like a creepy uncle with gender confusion, they were on point with that one

Lisa asks…

Why do liberal’s have a sick obsession with the Palin family and fox news?

It seems like every other liberal question is either about fox news or the Palin family. The other day they were bitc_hing about Sara’s Alaska show. Now they are bitc-hing about Crystal on dancing with the stars. Tomorrow it will be fox. These people need to get a life.

Michelle answers:

Palin has potential to be our next president, and I really hope that doesn’t happen, Insha’Allah.
Because of this, I watch what she does that has an affect on the political climate in America out of pure curiosity. I could care less about her personal life or her family’s personal life.
As for Fox, I think they’re presenting lies and slanted views to the people. I occasionally watch them just to see what the other side is saying. It is not an obsession, it is pure curiosity.

Laura asks…

On Fox News they said the government should not fund Planned Parenthood and all the services it offers?

They also admitted that Planned Parenthood offers other services besides abortions ( only 3% is abortions which are paid by the clients) They do checks for Women’s cancers and high blood pressure etc.
The fox news guy suggested you can get these checks at Walgreen’s?

My question is which Walgreen’s does the Pap Smears?

Michelle answers:

Fox News? Wow. Go Watch the movie ” Out Foxed ” fox news is the worst place to get news.

Your Questions About Facebook Login

Michael asks…

Facebook just wont load
is anyone else having problems loading it or going on it?

Michelle answers:

When I saw your question I checked face book and it works just fine here. I am in the southeastern USA.

Steven asks…

Logging in to facebook…How do u hide the email adress that pops up when u type in a letter?

Some one went on facebook on my laptop so now when I’m logging in and i type (for example) n, nattalia@homtail.com pops up.
I really need to know how i can get rid of this and it is urgent. Anyone know how to sort of reset the facebook login??!!! THANK YOU. x

Michelle answers:

Go to internet explorer properties (Internet options) in control panel. If you r using windows 7 there will be delete browsing history and cookies. Click on that. If windows XP, You should open the properties menu. Then On the General Tab( when you go 2 properties General Tab is where u r), there will be browsing history separatedly given. In that click on Delete. Then, your saved password also will be gone. If u have more doubts email to me with your operating system details.

Michelle answers:

Problem with your wireless connectivity not with your Facebook. Make sure that it is working properly, restarting your computer and try again.

William asks…

Does online history and login information save to each account on a macbook pro?

Like lets say i logged in Facebook using my account on a macbook and i chose for facebook to remember my login and password. If i login using a different user account on the same macbook, will it still have my online information saved? Would it still show the same online history as well?

Michelle answers:

“Does online history and login information save to each account?” If you mean “each logged-in user’s account”, the answer is ‘Yes’.

Your Questions About Food Network

Chris asks…

How did Alton Brown, Giada De Laurentiis, Ina Garten etc. get on Food Network?

Were they just well-known and Food Network found them? Did they do some kind of audition? How did it happen?

Michelle answers:

Alton Brown was in television production and went to culinary school
Ina Garten bought a cooking store on Long Island, the store was called Barefoot Contessa
and Giada is Italian, beautiful and went to Le Cordon Bleu culinary school and was a food stylist.

Laura asks…

So who doesn’t want Emeril Lagasse to go? As of Dec. 11 he will no longer be on food network?

I honestly don’t want to see him go he’s a great cook with great ideas he’s basically all the food network has got as far as I have seen. I would rather see him on than what’s her face…sorta homemade crap…I’m sorry honestly if you like Emeril you’ll tell me what you think…

Michelle answers:

Well, as much as i love the guy. Maybe he is trying to lighten his load. He is still going to do the essence show.

Here is his letter
Dear Friends,

Thank you for visiting our site and sending your well wishes and thoughts about ‘Emeril Live’. It is true that we will not continue production of ‘Emeril Live’ after the next filming in December, but I am looking forward to continuing a long working relationship with them for years to come. Emeril Live will continue to air on the Food Network for about two more years, with premiere episodes throughout 2008, and I will continue to host ‘Essence of Emeril’ next year. We are also looking into some specials and other new development opportunities.

‘Emeril Live’ has been a wonderful experience over the past ten years, and I’d just like to say how deeply appreciative I am to all the unbelievable staff – many who have been with the show since the beginning. I’d also like to thank the loyal viewers and fans, and the many talented guests who have appeared on the show through the years. It’s been such an incredible ride…but there is much more to come. I have lots of new ideas cooking…so please stay tuned!!

Emeril Lagasse

Daniel asks…

Have you used hops in any food recipes?

I have conducted a searched and found this interesting recipe on Food Network‘s site, Salmon with Hops Bearnaise over Cauliflower Puree. So I was wondering how common their [hops] use in recipes is with beer lovers and cooks in general.
Mac N Cheese.
LOL, you wild man. At what phase of preparation do you add them?
Pellets or cones?
Thanks.

Michelle answers:

Yes…with macaroni and cheese.

Carol asks…

What, if anything, is the difference between “mouth feel” and texture in regards to food?

They have to be at least nearly the same thing, yet the two terms appear independently on some food network shows. The easy answer is that they are synonymous, but any subtle differentiation would be welcome.

Michelle answers:

Perhaps mouth feel would pertain to heaviness or lightness on the tongue which is a bit different than texture. (Just a theory) 😉

Your Questions About Firefox

Donald asks…

How can I put google icon on desktop with firefox as my search engine?

I have firefox as my search engine. I want to put a google icon on my desktop. How can I do this?

Michelle answers:

I presume that you want a Google (Chrome, maybe?) icon on your desktop which loads up Firefox. (By the way, Firefox is a Web browser not search engine but don’t worry)

1) Find an icon online. It has to be an icon with a .ico file extension.

2) Download it and save it somewhere accessible on your computer.

2) Go to your desktop, right click the Firefox icon and click ‘Properties’ at the bottom.

3) Click ‘Change Icon’ then ‘Browse’.

4) Find your icon, select it and click OK.

5) Click ‘Apply’ then ‘OK’.

6) The icon should have changed.

If you want to get the old one back it should be in a directory similar to this:
C:Program FilesMozilla Firefoxfirefox.exe

Susan asks…

Firefox closes whenever I start up my computer?

This is something that’s been bothering me for about a week. Whenever I freshly start up my computer, and for about a minute afterward, any Firefox window I open will close in about 5-15 seconds. There are no problems after my computers been on for a couple minutes, only in that brief window of time directly after I start it up. What could be causing this?

Michelle answers:

If you are trying to start Firefox before your computer has finished booting up, then this is what will happen. Wait until your computer has finished booting up before you open Firefox.

Robert asks…

How to make Firefox store a different password?

I’m using the latest version of Firefox and when I was prompted to save a password on a particular site, I accidentally saved the wrong one. How can I change it in Firefox?

Michelle answers:

Go to Tools > Options, and select the Security tab. Under Passwords, click on the “Saved Passwords” button. Scroll down to the site for which you saved the wrong password, select it, and click the “Remove” button. That will erase the old (wrong) password, and you should be able to return to the site, log in again, and have Firefox save the correct password this time.

Jenny asks…

How do I get Firefox to save my tabs?

I have the latest version of Firefox. It asks me if I want to save my tabs every time I close it, and I always say yes, but it never saves them. Does anyone know why? Thanks for the help!

Michelle answers:

Try this instead:

1. Click the Tools->Options menu item.
2. Click the Main page.
3. Set the “When Firefox starts” list box to “Show my Windows and tabs from last time”.
4. Click OK.

Hope that helps.

Your Questions About Fedex

Sandy asks…

What does delivery exception mean having to do with fedex?

I ordered an iPad and I got an update saying the package was in transit, now it says delivery exception. What does this mean? Earlier today, I saw a fedex truck pass by my house. I called up fedex and they said everything was fine. HELP!

Michelle answers:

It means they asked Apple to grant them until 8pm tonight to delivery us our new pads because they are overextended on orders. I just spoke to a FEDEX rep and that’s what they confirmed. We must just sit and wait. 🙁

David asks…

How can I receive stuff from different countries through FedEx?

My relative from a different country will send me a book, and needs my address. I was wondering, what way can I receive the book through fedex? What address would I have to give? my home?

Michelle answers:

Forget FedEx, UPS, DHL, etc., because they will cost more than the cost of the book and then some. What in the world is wrong with the postal service? OK, it may not work in the good ol’ U.S. Of A., but it works in the rest of the world — even Russia.

I have been shipping a product around the world using only the regular postal service for many years, simply because it is numerous times cheaper. I may have one item lost a year, and I believe the recipient is probably lying about not receiving it, even then, just to get another one. THAT is the only downside, because regular post has no tracking number. Would this book need one? Heck, even registered mail is far, far cheaper.

George asks…

Can fedex drivers date the people that they deliver to?

A fedex driver comes to our building daily…..we flirt all the time. I am wondering….can fedex drivers date people at a business they are delivering to?

Michelle answers:

I would assume so since you are not a direct customer. To make sure I would reccomend calling FedEx. 1800 GO-FEDEX(463 3339) option 1. They can tell you for sure

Thomas asks…

I’m ordering an Irish Dance wig for a dance tournament. The place that I’m buying it from says that it ships the merchandise in Priority Mail or FedEx. How long will that take to ship (in days)?
