Your Questions About Natural Pregnancy Magazine

Betty asks…

what’s a good pregnancy magazine? with reliable info? and fun!?

i want to get a subscription to a pregnancy magazine, but i can’t find any in stores around here (??) to look at… so i’m not sure which one is good? i want some good info about childbirth also, and i’m all for exercise & would prefer natural (nonmedicated) birth, so i don’t want the magazine to ignore that option (i want to know all about epidurals, also, just in case!).

also, do they only do 6 month subscriptions? or at least have stuff about childbirth & babies too?
one time a while back (a few years ago) i found a really great british one, but i can’t remember the name 🙁
(it was kinda odd for me at first, being american, different lingo & measurements, but i loved the info!! & the tone of the magazine was fun)
yeah, i have the “what to expect when you’re expecting” book & pregnancy journal as well as “what to expect the first year” and i have “your pregnancy week by week” “modern woman’s guide to motherhood” (i like to read! lol)
they are great
thanks everyone! i did sign up for a couple free subscriptions to american baby & baby talk, and Mothering looks so great! i got a free online sample issue & i think it’s the one!!!

Michelle answers:

I LOVE Mothering magazine. It is mostly natural, they have a lot of good info, and unlike the mainstream ones, do not have a pharmaceutical ad every other page.
Cookie was stupid..there were articles that focused on “looking SEXY your whole pregnancy” (like that is your top focus!!) and “bling for your baby” and dumb shit like that.
Good Luck with your cub! Lol

Joseph asks…

Clincal Trial: Natural pregnancy?!?

I was reading a study in a magazine from this odd study in India or something, I wish I could find you the link so you could laugh your asses off, but they suggested females can get pregnant without any contact from men/sperm, and without invitro.
I don’t remember what it said exactly but it had some crazy bio formulas or something, but I did not understand.
Is this a major hoax or no?!
I found it pretty funny, how could a girl make herself pregnant? Hahaha, those crazy folk…

Michelle answers:

I’ve heard the same thing. I tried to look for a link but couldn’t find one. They say that it’s possible for 2 eggs to fuse, but if you have a child with 100% of your DNA…isn’t that basically like a twin? What happens if your child commits a crime and they find your DNA (because it’s the same as hers) at the scene. And women don’t have both X and Y chromosomes, so you would only be able to have a female.. Yeah it seems really strange.

Maria asks…

Is there a hard-copy magazine which is comparable to Mothering Magazine?

Mothering Magazine just went from hard copy issues to an online format. I was just introduced to it and was about to order a subscription but they just announced this news. I’m sad! I am in Canada. I had gotten Today’s Parent late in my first pregnancy and while Carson was a newborn, but I never found anything to be useful or interesting to me.

Do you get magazine subscriptions, not necessarily just for parenting, but maybe for pregnancy and birth prep also?

For those unfamiliar, “Mothering” was a natural parenting magazine which also dealt with prenatal and postpartum issues…also topics such as breastfeeding, cloth diapering, attachment parenting, baby wearing, vaccinations, midwifery, and so on. Hopefully someone can suggest a magazine very similar to this! 🙂

Michelle answers:

You might enjoy “The Compleat Mother” a lot.

I like it more than “Mothering,” which was increasingly a re-hash of the six zillion cloth diaper articles on-line. Nothing new in there, it seemed. “Compleat Mother,” on the other hand, can sometimes be stunningly far off the beaten path, which makes for a much more interesting read. Even if you don’t plan on birthing alone in the woods or co-sleeping with all six of your kids, etc, it is certainly more interesting to read about doing such things than it is to read the mainstream magazine dross.

“Brain, Child” is not natural-parenting stuff, but also worth a look — http://www.brainchildmag.com/

Daniel asks…

Your Questions About Natural Remedies In Pregnancy

Chris asks…

Pregnancy and bacterial vaginosis.?

I have suffered with BV for almost two years now and I am becoming concerned about what effects this may have on my chances of pregnancy in the present or future. I have never been pregnant and have no children but would like at least one within the next 3-5 years. I have been given every medicine out there for BV and it keeps coming back. I have even tried natural remedies and nothing. I have been tested for everything under the sun and I am clean (so is my partner). I know the BV does strange things to my body during the month however I would like to know if it will effect my chances of conceiving in the future. I am healthy besides this. When I tell my doctor she is no help and neither are her colleagues because most do not know what even causes this. Are there any other women that have or are experiencing the same thing and have been successful in becoming pregnant?

Michelle answers:

Oh my god..finally..someone like me! LOL! I was a chronic sufferer of BV before this unplanned pregnancy. I am also clean as is my partner.

When it occurs have you previously had a lot of sex? I would always get it whenever my partner and I had sex everyday for 2 weeks or more. If we had sex less frequently I wouldn’t get it.

Someone once told me it is because the vagina is acidic and sperm is considered “basic” and will mess with the PH acidity levels in your vagina.

Once I got pregnant I got BV once more and it disappeared on its own. I have not gotten BV anymore in my 6-7 months of pregnancy even with frequent sex. It might be a pregnant thing.

My doc was not helpful prepregnancy with BV but did tell me to urinate and possibly even wash the area after sex and that seemed to help too.

This doesnt answer your question on conception but may help you in preventing it.

Mary asks…

What is causing a sudden increase in heart palpitations and dizziness during my second trimester of pregnancy?

I have had infrequent heart palpitations for years. Just recently, these have increased to more than once a day and have included dizzy spells (once, I actually fainted). I am in my second trimester of pregnancy, my first trimester was uneventful (no palpitations, even). I eat healthy, have gained 10-15 lbs., exercise (not too heavily), try to stay hydrated, have a low pulse and a slightly lower than average blood pressure. I am more interested in natural remedies, but I would appreciate any knowledgeable or experienced advice. I am also receiving care from a midwife, no doctor.

Michelle answers:

One of the girls in my class had the same problem. She fainted in the shower and her doctor said that it was really no big deal it was just her body’s way of dealing with her pregnancy. Her doctor said it was because her body was trying to produce enough blood for her and the baby. She told her to drink lots and lots of water. When I say lots, her doc told her to drink at least 10 bottles a day. I don’t really know if this will help or not but I hope it does.

Lizzie asks…

Anything safe for depression during pregnancy?

I am 18 weeks pregnant and wondering if anyone out there has ever taken antidepressants while pregnant. I have suffered from postpartum depression in the past (after my second child was born) and was put on antidepressants for it then. I came off and have been doing relatively well until I got pregnant for a fourth time. I got pregnant when my third baby was only six months old, so I am not sure if it is a postpartum depression or possibly just a combination of postpartum and being pregnant again so quickly. I am very unsure as to what I can take in terms of antidepressants or natural remedies. I have heard that if I take antidepressants while pregnant my baby will have to go through withdrawal once her or she is born and I don’t think I want to do that to my baby, but at the same time right now I feel like I am losing it. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks so much.

Michelle answers:

Youve got a lack of Iron. Later pregnancies are especially difficult and if its your fourth, you’ll need a lot of nutrition. Dont mess with your health. Think of the baby. The fact that you’re depressed shows that the body is defecient in something. And if you’re thinking of resorting to drugs to treat the mind, dont be silly! You need omega 3, Iron and calcium. B, C. Get one of those multi vites. Exercise is very very important. Watch the weight also. You should not have gained more that 7kg in the first 5 months and a maximum of 11 kg at the point of giving birth. Do it for the child.

Steven asks…

Worried about feeling unhinged and crazy during pregnancy.?

I am 20 weeks pregnant and have definately felt teary, sensitive and cranky so far, which dosent bother me because I can deal with that an apparantly it is ‘normal’. However this last week i have been feeling paranoid and really needy/insecure with my husband ( who is a beautiful big marshmallow very emotionally supportive) and I feel like Im thinking differently, like my mind has been affected by the hormones. Also a general joyless feeling and anxiety. I am terrified of being depressed as I struggled with this earlier in my life and overcome it. I dont want to take anti depressants again ( altho im not knocking them..they were what i needed at the time..i just dont want to put anything in my body now) but i am scared of basically myself ! As i said its just the last week ( which has been really stressful for me). Does anyone know any natural remedies or any advice? I dont want it to get worse but i dont want to be alarmist! thanks… 🙂

Michelle answers:

This is all so normal. Just keep in mind that what you’re feeling is pregnancy related, and will go away after you’ve had the baby (of course then, you might have to deal with post par tum depression… I never did though, so don’t get scared.) I have been having similar feelings this pregnancy, I keep having dreams that my husband is cheating on me, even though I know that would never happen, and just feeling really self conscious. I think the funniest time though, was when I started crying at the dinner table because I thought my nose was growing… You get weird during pregnancy, and later you’ll be able to laugh about it.

Good Luck:)

Your Questions About The Oldest Natural Pregnancy

Daniel asks…

With a Cerclage put in place does it hurt to go into natural labor?

Hi there I am a bit over 34 weeks into my pregnancy. My older children where all delivered around 33-34 weeks, and had to stay 1-2weeks in the NICU. I usualy go into preterm labor around 20-24 weeks. So I am extatic that this one will finaly get to come home after delivery. I still have to have a c-section cause with my last he was breech and a Er c-section was preformed. The Cerclage was put in place this time, and I had it done around 18 weeks.. I have a incompitent cervix and this will be my last pregnancy, since I have had on c-section previously. I am wondering IF I start contracting before my scheduled Surgery date will it Realy hurt down there where the cervix is? I have heard that it hurts like Heck. I AM SO SCARED. Please be honest.

Thank you.

Michelle answers:

It is imperativ that you go to labor and delivery immediately with any regular contractions. Your cervix can be torn if you do not. THAT is what can be painful. The cerclage shoudl be removed by your 37th week though so chances are slim of any dialtion going on that you are not aware of.

Donna asks…

5 positive tests 5 weeks after an early (Natural) miscarriage…?

I had a natural miscarriage (no d&c required) about 5 weeks ago tomorrow (Wednesday). and I still havent had a period. I took a hpt about a week and a half ago, and at it was negative, and then a few days later I took another one and it was a faint positive. I took three yesterday and they all turned out Clear Dark Positives. And also took another one today that is a dark positive. I figured that since I have all the symptoms again and that since the first one I took was negative and that every test since then has been positive and getting darker results that this is cause of a new pregnancy and not just old hormones from the miscarriage 5 weeks ago. I have read that your HCG levels go down within days… a week at most. and for me to have darker results each day, wouldnt that mean my HCG levels are going up, and that I may infact be pregnant again already!! Me and my husband are excited, but I dont have a doctors apt. till December 5th. So please if you relate to my story, even remotely close, or have gotten pregnant this soon after a m/c and had a successful pregnancy, please leave me stuff…. I am trying to stay positive, I really feel like I am pregnant again and that this one will be successful. Thank you!

Michelle answers:

How exciting! I had a natural miscarriage at six weeks pregnant. It was a little over 4 weeks ago and I’m still waiting for AF to come. I took a hpt last Monday, Nov. 3 and it was negative but since then I have had very, very light spotting and a little brown blood so I hope it’s implantation because it only lasted a few hours. I have also started having pregnancy symptoms, which I never had with my last pregnancy. My bbs have been very sore, runny nose, hungry most of the day, bleeding gums when I brush my teeth, elevated temp since last week, somewhat nauseous, and lots of cm. I am hoping to get a BFP. I am really trying to wait until the weekend to test. I know that when I take another test if it is positive, it won’t be left over hormones from the miscarriage.
It sounds like you are pregnant again. I hope the same is true for me. Good luck this time and please wish it for me also. If you would like someone to talk to, please email me.

Betty asks…

Would you recommend natural or epidural?

I am 15. I know I know I’m a terrible person being pregnant and young.. Blah.. blah..blah..blah.. I’m not here to be trash talked. I want to know mothers feelings on natural birth or a birth with a epidural. I know all the risks about an epidural. But I just want to have the experience of a natural birth but I feel at my age I should get a epidural. I know If I was older I would want a home
pregnancy but I’m not and I want everything to go well just in case. But could someone tell me how they felt when they had there natural birth. I know everyone’s different. But I am making a birth plan and I want to know my options. And I don’t trust asking my mid wife because they will just say I should have natural because it’s safer for the baby and try to lead me on. I want to know the straight truth about natural birth and the good and bad. And I was wondering if size matters in this situation? Because being 15 I am small, and I was wondering if that could complicate or make labor and birth and bad experience for me. Feel free to tell me about your birth even if it was with a epidural! 🙂 thanks ladies!
Oh and I am 31 weeks with a baby girl!:)

Michelle answers:

I was 16 when I had my oldest son. I was 110 pounds before pregnancy and was in labor for almost 30 hours. My son was almost 8 pounds. I pushed for 45 minutes and did not have an epidural. I have given birth 4 times naturally without pain medication. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t have a beautiful birthing experience without an epidural. It is what i chose to do every time and have no regrets at all. I didn’t put myself or my baby at even the smallest risk and have no lasting side effects. My sister and sister in law both have back pain they did not have before their epidurals. I won’t lie, natural childbirth is painful. But it is nothing that can not be endured. I mean if it were that horrendous, women wouldn’t choose to have more than one baby. And they did it for all those years before epidurals were even thought about. I 100% recommend natural childbirth.

FYI: I never chose natural childbirth to “prove” anything. It was not about that at all. First of all, epidurals DO carry risks and the DO sometimes have side effects. Those are not risks that I was willing to take. Not having an epidural reduces your chances of tearing (which I never did)

Site explaining the pros and cons of epidurals.

And in 4 natural childbirths, not one of them are a blur. I remember everything crystal clear and felt GREAT afterward. I was always up taking a shower a few hours after giving birth. Do I think I am superwoman because I had natural childbirth and women that do get them are weak..nope. But natural was the best choice for me and I know from experience that you can have a wonderful birthing experience even when you don’t choose the epidural.

Ken asks…

should i be scared of labour?

i had a difficult pregnancy at 17 yr old, all i wanted was a natural birth but went into early labour at 7 1/2 month the reason why is unknown, my wters broke an then had cotractions for the next 11hrs, in the end she was delivered by emergency section, im now 19yrs and 16wk pregnant and terrified about going into labour its giving me nightmares, its ruining my pregnancy, will i have nother bad experience?

Michelle answers:

Just look at it this way: You are an experienced mommy now. You have the distinct advantage of knowing what to expect and , therefore, how to prepare. Your body has also been through labor and delivery, even if not the way you dreamed it would be. No pregnancy is the same but you have already had a hard labor and can use that to find ways to make it better. There is nothing saying that you will have the same experience.

Good luck, dear!

Your Questions About Natural Ivf Success Rates

Chris asks…

my fallopian tubes are damaged by hydrosalpinx. can my tubes heals/recover with the help of herbal medicines?

i was given IVF option for to conceive a child, but its expensive & the success rates is low. I want to turn to herbal medicines & know if there are chances for the natural pregnancy ?

Michelle answers:

Yes your tubes can recover, read this

David asks…

IUI without clomid?!!?

My Dh has 95% abnormal morphology but very good sperm count and everything else is good, but the dr said his morphology is very low.. dr recommended ART, we are considering IUI

first question: do i have 2 take clomid or injections knowing i have no problems?! i have already took HmG and HcG for 3 months without IUI –natural way- i have put so much weight after that -which i can’t take it off-, i don’t want to take them anymore!!

we had no problem with my 2 year old DD, but when ttc this time we coincidentally discovered that dh have a problem, we tried oral treatments but indeed his tests are getting worst..

question # 2: if i have to take them anyway, will IVF have a better success rate?- knowing we are TTC a Boy.. we have a limited budget and we don’t want to spend more money on useless treatments and failed IUI…

Michelle answers:

Most doctors will want to do IUI first before IVF. Either way I am sure they will want you on some sort of meds to help boost your fertility and that will boost your chances. If you take Clomid or injections is usually for 5-7 days and that is it for the cycle. Even if you do IVF there is no guarantee for a boy. They do nothing to screen out the female embryos. I would ask your doctor what is best. They take into consideration your budget and schedule when deciding your fertility treatment. I didn’t have any weight side effects from taking these medications. I would ask your doctor about that.

Best wishes ttc!!!!!

Richard asks…

If you found out you couldn’t conceive, what did you do please?

Do you envisage a life without kids, do you decide on adoption, if IVF etc hasn’t worked or was never an option do you decide on adoption then? Do you rule them out one by one based on success rates? Do you make an announcement that you’re “having to look elsewhere” to family and friends or let it creep out through natural means? When do you decide to accept that you can’t get pregnant- how long do you give things a chance? Did you decide on a hysterectomy yourself or did you base your decision on your doctor’s advice? I’m sorry for the number of questions- I have no idea how this stuff works and I don’t know a single other person with fertility issues.

Please don’t say to speak to my dr about what’s available or suitable for me, I know I can do that. I want to know how other women in the same boat felt because I don’t have anyone to ask.

Michelle answers:

My thoughts and feelings have changed along the way. When I found out I was infertile, after trying the old fashioned way for over a year, I turned to IVF. We learned it was our only option. My husband and I always felt we would adopt but after having biological child or two. We have not had a biological child yet and doesn’t look like it’s in the cards for us at this point. I have gone through 4 fresh IVF cycles and 1 frozen cycle. Two of those cycles failed and 3 ended in a loss.

As for the hysterectomy, I agree with Rocker Wife 100% about it not being an option for infertility but is an option for a serious medical condition (after a second or third opinion of course). There is talk among some women on a forum I belong to about having a hysterectomy after having a number of fertility treatments including IVF. Not because of infertility but because some studies indicate elevated risks of ovarian cancer with MANY stimulated cycles and these women are concerned.

I used to want to adopt an infant until I looked into it. There are huge costs (You can do 4-5 IVF cycles for the price of one adoption) and cons and risks involved and there is no guarantee that you will succeed. You can be matched over and over only to be denied. The application process is enormously lengthy, invasive, and delves into your most personal life and your friends and family’s lives as well. Also, I used to believe that there were a lot of babies in need of a family. There aren’t. For every infant put up for adoption there are 30 to 40 couples waiting to adopt. BUT, there are so many children in the foster care system waiting for a family. I have started the process to foster and am now considering fostering or fostering to adopt. I am just not quite ready yet. If I did adopt, I would be open about it. Not many understand what it is like to be infertile or understand the adoption process and I don’t hide it. I want others to be educated and so I have been an open book about my infertility. I have heard countless times “Why don’t you just adopt”. My heart breaks a little more every time I hear this. It is just because others are unthinking and uneducated. I educate them.

Please look into a support group, either online or in your area. I really like fertilethoughts.com and ivfconnections.net. I have met some wonderful women there, get great support, have learned a lot, and even made friends with some in my area.

I have 4 frozen embryos. I will use them for two more frozen cycles when (or if) I am ready. If that doesn’t work, I will think about fostering. I’ve thought about using donor eggs but came to the conclusion that that wasn’t for me. I wish there was a magic answer telling me the best way to go from here. I guess though like everything else, we’ll figure it out. I don’t know how much more I have in me. I’m 40 now and I feel it. It’s been a long road for me and I’ve been on this roller coaster too long and about ready to get off. I do, however, not regret the attempts I have made. I couldn’t live the rest of my life if I didn’t give it my best shot. My husband and I are very close and both feel if, in the end, it is just the two of us we are both very lucky. I think that for now I’ll just have a glass of wine while I’m thinking.

Please feel free to contact me anytime if you have any questions, need some advice, or want to vent. Be well.

Mark asks…

Need advise…please help?

My husband and I have been trying to have our second baby over one year. Our problem was that my husband has low morphology (only 4%). He is 39 and I am 35. We already had 4 unsuccessfully natural IUI. My doctor suggest us to do IVF with ICSI. However, I am not ready for that step yet. Do you think clomid would increase the success rate? However, i am afraid of risk of multiples. Any suggestions? Any success stories?

Michelle answers:

My husband had abnormal morphology and i have endometreosis. We were unable to get pregnant for 3 years. My gyno sent us to a fertility specialist. He told us that with 4 iui attempts that we would have a 75% success rate overall. Prior to the iui i kept all my scheduled visits starting from day 1 of period. I had been on prenatal vitamins for about 2 months prior also. He put me on a low dose of chlomid and gave me an hgh trigger shot for ovulation. 3 days later we had the procedure done. Well, they told me it was slim to none that i would get pregnant on the 1st attempt, but i put my faith in god-not the doctor. After prayer and anxiousness, it was time for me to go in for the blood pregnancy test. I swore i was about to start my period, it was supposed to come that day. I felt like it was around the corner. Anyways, a few hours later they called and said i was pregnant!!! Because of my high hgc levels, they thought i was having twins. Come to find out, i have a healthy 8 month old little boy. He is our miracle baby. Don’t ever let anyone tell you it’s impossible, if you believe and pray, it can happen for you. It worked for me!!!

Your Questions About Natural Pregnancy Remedies

Joseph asks…

Kidney stones during pregnancy?

I just found out that I have kidney stones and I’m 35 weeks pregnant. This isn’t the first time I’ve had them, and for some reason I cannot pass them naturally. I’m just wondering if anyone has any natural remedies that will at least relieve the pain, or by some miracle help them to pass. I know cranberry juice is good for UTI’s, but does it help with stones as well? Any experience or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Michelle answers:

Yes it can help for stones as well. My niece who is diabetic gets them constantly and she takes cranberry capsules which are concentrated so she doesn’t have to drink that stuff everyday. Make sure you get cranberry juice and not the cocktail though.

Donna asks…

Anyone know any ways to induce a period?

I am 4 days late on my period but have a negative pregnancy test! I heard sex can help sometimes (my partner and I don’t have sex often) so last night we did, this morning I had some light pink spotting when I wiped, but that was it. No cramps nada. Anyone have any natural remedies?
I’m not even stressed out. I have a few things with school/work, but nothing more than usual. And I pretty much lay about after school so its not I’m not getting any “me” time.

Michelle answers:

If your not pregnant then not getting your period is moot. Sometimes some women miss their periods. It’s perfectly fine to mist you period for up to year I don’t mean that your infertile or there is something wrong with you. If you want to make sure that you have a regular period then go on the pill.

Mostly like your period date just changed. If you are hanging out or living with a new woman your period might change change dates to be the same as hers.

Michael asks…

It’s been seven weeks since my last period. How can I bring it on?

I have tested twice for pregnancy and both neg.
This scanty period has always been happening for me.
I would like some natural remedies please?
I have gained 3 kilos and my tummy is terribly bloated.
I have also had 5 sessions of acupuncture.
Need some relief soon before I go mental.

Michelle answers:

This has happened to me in the past. If you go to your physician, he or she can give you a prescription for progesterone pills to induce a period. But this is a “fake period.” It isn’t the result of ovulation. It is the result of the medication causing you to bleed. But it can jumpstart your cycle.

I have also done natural remedies, as well. I believe I took several herbs, in combination, although I can’t remember all of them. You can probably find them online.

Best of luck to you.

Maria asks…

What can i do at home to heal after an ectopic pregnancy?

Boy is this wired asking this to the whole public but I do need you guys. I had an ectopic pregnancy which i had not known about until i started feeling a lot of lower abdominal pain and had to go straight to the OR for Laparoscopy which is known as keyhole surgery to remove the fallopian tube that ruptured with the fetus. Now that I’m back home for the next 4 weeks, does anyone whose has undergone the surgery know what are the do’s and don’t’s of self care at home are? I know about no heavy lifting but is there anything else? Anything I can eat to heal this large incision they made on my lower stomach? Is there anything that may seem so normal like sitting through a whole movie okay? I’m suppose to walk around but for how long? What natural remedies did you take to stop abdominal pain? Anything at all, please let me know. Please ONLY the women that have gone through this before. I’ve been reading all kinds of info ever since i got home and i need the real life ones. Thank you and have a blessed day.

Your Questions About Natural Remedies Pregnancy Headaches

Ruth asks…

11 wks pregnant, bad headaches, any natural remedies?

so I am 11 wks pregnant with my second child…I was doing ok, just really tired, and having some nauseous moments, but good…then last week at 10 weeks I started to get bad tension headaches and migraines, and I know you can take tylenol, so I pretty much have been taking it almost everyday, the only thing is, it’s not working for me anymore…do you know of any natural remedies I can use while pregnant to ease this headache pain…it’s been almost 2 wks of it and I am getting really dragged out from it. I was reading that this was actually quite a normal time in pregnancy to get headaches because of all the raging hormones, but the tylenol is just not cutting it, please help with your natural remedies! Thanks!

Michelle answers:

I was having horrible headaches when i was pregnant and was told when i visited the doctor that this was hormones and that also i was a bit dehydrated. So they had me lay off the caffeine which was kinda hard for me to do..but i did it and drank a ton of water and took plenty of naps. Sleep helped it everytime! Also stress could be causing this too so try to do some kind of calming routine. They have yoga for pregnant women or something like reading a book. I personally enjoy chicken soup for the mothers soul while i was pregnant. Always always be sure to rest as much as possible, take in plenty of fluids and relax whenever you can. This will help you the most!!

Sandy asks…

Pregnancy Headaches… Any advice?

I’ve been battling a headache for over a day now and regardless of what anyone says, I refuse take Tylenol, regardless of how “safe” it is, my baby doesn’t know what it is, and doesn’t need that crap in it’s innocent system while it’s trying to develop.

If anyone has had any luck with any natural remedies, I’d love to give them a shot! Negative comments WILL be reported, come on ladies, we’re all on the same page here, no need to be nasty because of the choices I make in my pregnancy.

Thank you.

I had really bad headaches in the beginning of my pregnancy. I asked my doctor, and she said take tylenol, but I agree with you about it. She also said to have some caffeine, but I really couldn’t do that either. As far as I got was a chocolate ice cream…so the best thing that worked for me were head massages and cool wet washcloths and lots of laying down time. Sorry if I didn’t help.

Sharon asks…

Need good advice for severe pregnancy headaches!?

Hello, I am just about 5 months pregnant and I am suffering from pretty severe tension/migraine headaches. My situation is a little crazy because I’m currently living in Argentina with my husband and we are expecting our first child. My doctor here has told me the only medicine I can take is this tylenol like med. that does not seem to even phase these headaches.

I’v been getting these headaches for about 1 month now and they feel like my head is in a drum, just pounding and pounding! I have tried the hot/cold wraps on my neck and massage just seems to make them worse! If I were in the States, I would seek advice from a holistic doctor, maybe some good natural remedies that I could try…but I’m here and I speak very little spanish and I’m about to loose my mind with these headaches!

If anyone has any ideas, maybe something unique that worked for them…any ideas about getting a hold on these headaches would be so very appreciated! Thanks!

Michelle answers:

I’m not sure that this will work for you but it’s a suggestion. I was having really bad headaches and they were being caused by tension because of my posture during pregnancy. I went to a chiropractor and had my neck and back realigned and it was almost like instant relief.

Paul asks…

What can a pregnant woman take for headaches?

Tylenol is on my “safe list” of drugs OK to take during pregnancy, but I still just dont like to take pills since I am pregnant you know? What are some natural remedies? I thought I might be dehydrated but upon drinking lots of water I just pee alot more! Any other suggestions?

Michelle answers:

The headaches are normal, there awful, and i found nothing to help with them while i was pregnant. But tylonal is very safe. And if you can believe it so is vicodin and darvacet. So tylonal is on the lower end of the pain meds you can take. I was a little iffy about pills during my pregnancy but compared to vicodin tylonal is nothing so i felt pretty safe taking it every now and again

Your Questions About All Natural Pregnancy Products

Ruth asks…

Bare Minerals Question?

SERIOUS ANSWERS PLEASE!! NOT HERE FOR ANY BICKERING

Hi, I am a big fan of Mary Kay products, and i just ordered some loose press powder. Now at the same time I ordered bare minerals which is all natural and healthy for you skin, which I’m starting to enjoy very much. It gives the ultimate coverage to your skin, i was amazed how it worked on me!! Keep in mind that i ordered all these products from ebay, and didnt keep track on my winnings, because I thought i would be outbidded, plus i have a lot on my mind like these pregnancy issues. So anyway, what do you think i should do with the extra mary kay press powder, because i love the bare minerals.
The reason I asked this because i dont want to be throwing some good makeup in the garbage. Should I give it to someone else to use, or would that be wrong considering that bare minerals is healthier?

Michelle answers:

You can’t sell the powder on eBay if it’s been used. I recommend selling on Live Journal (www.livejournal.com), Laundromatic(www.laundromatic.net), LatherRinseClick(www.latherrinseclick.com), or swapping on Makeup Alley (www.makeupalley.com) or Makeup Talk (www.makeuptalk.com). You have to register to use these sites, but it is free.

Richard asks…

Whats happening with me? Pregnant or what?

Well I stopped using birth control sept 17th, which was the last inactive pill that I had and was the last day of my period. I got a normal period on oct 22-25th and then in nov. On 24th-27th. Based on these last two periods I was calculating my ovulation, and was doing my form of a natural birth control on not having sex the week of my “expected ovulation”. By what I calculated I was supposed to ovulate on the 13th of dec. On that precise day I had noticed some dark brown staining along with some cramping. The staining wasnt enough to wear femine products and lasted a total of 2 days. The cramping on the other hand has not stopped. My “expected” period, like I said, based on my last 2 periods, was supposed to arrive the 27th of dec. And has yet to show to this day. On the other hand the cramping that started on the 13th of dec. Has yet to stop. It will alternate to cramping of the back to the pelvic area, then to left of my pelvis to the right of my pelvis. They are not hardcore cramping that I would feel with a period but can some times get there, generally there are just a faint annoying sensation. Any ideas on to what may cause these weird symptoms?

I have taken 3 pregnancy tests ( clearblue easy digital)
1. On the 15th of dec.

2. On the 29th of dec.

3. Today, the 1st of jan.

All have come back negative Rolling Eyes

also….
Started on the depo shot right after I had my daughter in dec of 04. I was on that for a total of 3 shots…9 months. I let my body rest from the shot for a couple months. I got on the pill ovcon35 in july I belive and stopped taking it in sept.

Michelle answers:

If you have done the test and it come up negative then you most
likely are not but it might be good to go see you regular doctor
so he can do some test and see what the problem is

Mandy asks…

need a good moisturizer/skin care routine?

I am 23 and I have become more conciouse about aging. I have clear skin my only problem would be my dark circles but since I am pregnant I know that has a lot to do with them. I drink plenty of water and I try to eat as healthy as possible I also do my best to to get some kind of excercise. I love makeup although I’ve come to realize I like the natural look more. So I got a $40 gift card to Macy’s and I would like to use it in skincare products like a moisturizer with spf, sunblock, cleanser or what ever. Like I said I like the natural look and I just want to enhance what I already have. If you could reccomend me some great products I would really appreciate it. Also if you could reccomend what great things I could do/use to help delay the aging process and to keep radiant skin. I would eventually like to invest in a eye cream but since many eye creams have retinal and I am pregnant I’d rather stay away from them right now.
Here are the available stores in my local Macy’s
Lancome
Estee Lauder
Shiseido
Clinique
Chanel
Origins
Perscriptives
Benefit

BTW I am 23 and I have noticed that when I try some products they seem to enhance the appearence of pores and fine lines that I didnt even notice before. I am currently using Dear John by Benefit at night since it doesnt have SPF and I like how its a nice heavy cream on my dry skin. Also I dont know if its because of my pregnancy but it seems I now have some fine lines under my eyes and crows feet :o( (when I smile of course) but I would like to minimize them.
Also your reccomendations dont have to be dept store brands they could be natural skin care routines or drug store brands.

My current routine.
mornings: wash face with aveeno baby wash
ddf spf 30 moisturizer
mascara

night:
wash face with baby wash
dear john moisturizer

olay toner but it made my skin flaky and the all day moisturizing cream from olay irriated and dried my skin.

Thank you.

Michelle answers:

I’m 36 (but most say I look in my late 20’s) and I’ve tried everything. I have very sensitive, dry skin. Without a doubt the best moisturizing routine I’ve found is in a combination of pure vegetable glycerin and unrefined shea butter. You can get pure glycerin in a health food store for under $10. Shea butter can be harder since many products sold commercially are refined and therefore lose a lot of their potency. So I recommend visiting a site dedicated to quality shea butter such as http://www.sheabutterhut.com/. This is what I use, but if you google unrefined shea butter you will find lots of sites. Shea butter will never irritate your skin and works great for softening fine lines.

Shea butter has a different texture in its unrefined state and unless you melt it, it will not be creamy, but crumbly and a little hard if left under cool conditions. However, once you spread it it absorbs very easily, so don’t let this fact sway you if you decide to try it.

If you must use the gift certificate for a cream I recommend purchasing the glycerin with whatever product you use and use it in conjunction with it. A little goes a long way and it may feel oily at first but again, it absorbs rapidly. Better yet save your gift certificate for some nice makeup like Clinique and follow my skin care advice. A few years ago I used a product that irritated my skin and left it inflamed and sensitive, and I had to give up creams because the ingredients made it worse. It was only after months of trial and error that I discovered this routine, and for those with dry skin I totally advise giving it a try.

Your Questions About Natural Infertility Treatments

James asks…

Why do some people think they gave the right to criticise an “older” mother?

I’m sick of it!!

I’m 38 and expecting my second (naturally conceived) baby. I don’t look or feel 38 but its there on my birth certificate. My husband is younger (27). I have a three year old son already.

I hate reading the bile and hatred which gets spewed in the media toward some “older” mothers – ie we’re all selfish “have it all” careers women using IVF to have babies we’ll eb too old to care for etc etc. Utter crap.

How would you accuse my cousin – who’s been ttc since she was 24 and has endured 16 years of infertility, several m/cs, ectopics, failed IVF cycles and adoption attempts. She’s 41 and about to have her first – total surprise (naturally conceived) baby, and we’re all delighted for her after 16 years of pain. Is she “selfish”? Not at all!! She would have been a mum at 24 if nature had cooperated.

Why have I had children in my 30’s and not my 20’s? Because my 20’s were not the right time for me to have kids. The man I was with didn’t want them and tbh I wasn’t really interested in children then. I was too busy living my life. I’m not in any way a “career” woman but there were things I was trying to achieve and do in my 20s which took precendence over babies.

I didn’t really feel ready for children until I reached 32 (with a new partner) and it took us 18 months to conceive our son (my husband had the problem not me). Same again with this baby – its taken 18 months to conceive so hey ho I’m 38. We haven’t used any form of IVF or artificial fertility treatment.

I have no problem with being “older”. This is the right time for me to have children. I feel ready and settled and able to be a good mum. My mum was older when she had me so I see nothing wrong with it I didn’t miss out on anything because my mum was about 10 years older than some of my friends mums.

I had a perfect, easy pregnancy and natural delivery with my son and it looks like I’ll be lucky this time too. As for the “risks” of downs etc, well I’m not even having the tests. I’d love my child regardless. I would never abort a baby because they weren’t “perfect”.

So why all the bigotry? I feel just as angry about stupid thoughtless teenagers who get knocked up to get a council house as some people feel about “older” mums. These silly little girls with no money, no home and no clue are the selfish ones not sensible women who are in a more stable position to have children.

The reasons for having children younger don’t always work out anyway. My mother in law started having babies at 19 (she was trying to get knocked up at 16, despite having no money, no job, no partner and nowhere to live – responsible eh?) so that she could “be young enough to enjoy her grandchildren”. But she never sees them as she lives 250 miles away!!! So what was the point? My elderly mum sees more of my son than she does. (And yes it does make me a little sad that she can’t do as much with him as she could have done 10 or 15 years ago. But thats my only regret.)

So stop with the bigotry. I am so looking forward to the next 20-30 years of my life and have never felt more positive!

And BTW noone EVER picked on me at school for my parents being a bit older. Thats a really stupid idea.
Suze – I am not criticising ALL young mothers (most excellent mums) but just highlighting the fact that SOME young mothers could also be described as selfish and irreponsible for getting knocked up when they don’t even have a roof over their heads! But less vitriol is directed at them than at women who are in their 30s . . .
LeAnn – my 17 y/o little sister in law is currently deliberately attempting to get pregnant so that she and her boyfriend can get a council flat and she won’t have to work. To me that is utterly stupid, irresponsible and selfish. Its people like that who make me mad!!
Wacel – you paltry attempts at personal insults (insinuating that I must somehow be “immature” even though you don’t know anything about me) are laughable. The fact that you have not even read my post and the fact that I have categorically stated that I am not opposed to ALL young mothers, just those who use pregnancy and benefit dependency as a lifestyle choice invalids anything you have to say on the subject. You have not read the full content of my post so how can you comment on it?

People with weak arguments always resort to personal insults. Its deeply pathetic.

Michelle answers:

I was 6 weeks away from my 46th birthday when I had my beautiful baby girl. She was naturally conceived and my son was almost 17 when she was born. Nature is a powerful thing and what will be will be.
More power to you and congratulations.

Add on: My mum was 42 when my sister was born, my aunt was 40 and had twin girls. My mums aunt was 51 when she had a baby and 52 when she had another.
My sister was 38 when she had her second child and my husbands mum had her two kids in her late 30’s.

Mary asks…

has anyone tried acupuncture?

I am 25 and me and my husband have been trying for at least 4 years nothing ..went through a bunch of testing every month ,still nothing. our doc says there should be no reason why i can’t get pregnant..except for the hormonal imbalance which can be easily fix with meds or herbal supplements..well i decided after a year of treatment to take a break because all the meds he was pumping into me where doing nothing but making me gain weight and making me depressed all the time to the point where my sex drive went plummeting and i could not be around pregnant people without crying after wards or sitting in my house for weeks with out talking..so after doing a bunch of research i decided to try changing our life style eating healthy, exercise(not to much though),and taking herbal supplements which has been working i have been regular for 3 months, and i want to know if anyone has tried acupuncture for infertility? i heard and did research that it has the same chance or better chances then IVF..i want to further my natural ways..or if yo have any other info i might not know about would be great to
thank you

Michelle answers:

I’m 100 % with ya. I think the natural way will work! I tried clomid and I did conceive but had a mc 8wks later. I know i can get pregnant so I want to try on my own.. By losing weight and changing my diet I fell it will work.. My cousin has a friend that did acupuncture and it worked for her.. Good luck and baby dust to you!

Paul asks…

How many IUI’s should I aim for?

My husband and I have been advised by the doctor to go for IUI/Artificial insemination now. My insurance will cover 8 cycles of IUI and 4 of IVF. My husband I were wondering if 2 rounds of IUI should be enough to test if it works? I do not want to discuss here the reasons of infertility, but what I am looking for on this portal is advise from people who may have gone through this process. My doctor kind of agrees that 2 rounds of IUI should be enough. I will turn 30 in Jan 2011 so hoping to get pregnant by then. But knowing how difficult IVF is, I was thinking if we should watch up to 4-5 rounds of IUI and if God forbid, those attempts fail, then proceed for IVF? Knowing there is a 1-2% increase in deformities in a baby is the worst part. We want a healthy baby, do not want to take any chances in adding to a situation which might increase the danger. If it were to happen in a natural birth, it’s beyond our control but don’t want to increase the chances, you know? The biggest pain for people is to see children who cannot look after themselves or see their children in poor health. I am a homemaker so resting after IVF shouldn’t be too difficult to do but the concern for child’s betterment and treatment’s complications worry me. Sincere thanks to all those willing to offer suggestions and answer my question!

Michelle answers:

If I were you, I would just take them one at a time, and deal with making the decision to move on to IVF if and when it comes to that. So, what I am saying is, right now, aim for 1 IUI. Then, if it should be unsuccessful, aim for 1 IUI. You and your husband and your doctor can discuss the next step if need be, but why stress about it now? Good luck!

Chris asks…

Irregular period help?

I am going to the doctors tomorrow as I have been TTC for a about 9 months now. I know that normally a doctor wouldn’t talk about infertility or trying to work out why I haven’t conceived until we have been trying for a year but I am only 22. He is 24. Surely we should have conceived by now.
Most of my problem is that my period is so irregular that I can’t chart when I would be ovulating. To overcome this though we have been having sex every other day or every day which is what we would be normally even if we weren’t TTC. My period seems to range anywhere between 14-33days.
I was on the pill before TTC and when I stopped we used condoms for two months to give my body a bit of time to return to it’s natural cycle. Before I started taking the pill my period was the same and I spoke to my GP who said that it was probably just because my cycle hadn’t settled down and prescribed the pill to try and make life a bit easier. Since stopping the pill almost a year ago I have acne again also which is not helping. I have also been suffering from anemia which would have normally been fixed by taking iron tablets but since stopping the pill to me it doesn’t feel like it is helping as much as it once was. I have tried google and the only thing I can come up with is PCOS. I spoke to my friend who is a nurse and said it is possible and that I should go talk to my doctor about not having conceived yet and irregular periods. I just really don’t know how to bring up this topic with my doctor. I am worried she is going to tell me I’m to young to be TTC even though her opinion doesn’t matter to me. How should I bring up the subject? Could it really be PCOS? If it is how long will it take for me to get diagnosed and start a ‘treatment’ to be able to conceive? What else could it be? I have an appointment for tomorrow lunch time and panicking about it as I never thought we would have a problem conceiveng.

Michelle answers:

Hi Hun
PSOS is very common so dont stress too much about it.
Irregular periods are too. Maybe try charting you cervical mucus which is what I have been doing I have had irregular periods too. A big fat pain in ther arse when you are ttc.
Around ov you CM is clear and looks like egg whites

Bringing this up with you doc shouldnt be too hard, you are a grown woman who that has concerns and would like some answers.
I’m sure they will help you in every way you can as your concerns are genuine. Don’t be affaid to mention psos or anything else you may your concerned about.

Good luck with you appointment and remember that doctors are there to help with your needs.

Your Questions About Natural Pregnancy Prevention

Chris asks…

Are there other ways of pregnancy prevention other than the shot and the pill?

I’m married and I don’t want to take the pill or the shot, I just want a natural way of preventing pregnancies and still have sex. Anyone know any good ways?

Michelle answers:

Barrier methods, such as condoms, diaphragms, etc.

Or, the natural family planning, where you learn to recognize the times of the month where you would be fertile (by checking mucous thickness, vaginal temps, etc.) and avoid sex during those times.

Lizzie asks…

What happens during natural heat cycle in a non spayed female medium sized dog.?

this question is for a single never to be bred dog. just natural prevention of pregnancy. what happens to a single male?

Michelle answers:

They go in heat about every six months and will bleed for two weeks there private area will get quite swollen too. If a male is around he will smell her in heat and will breed with her. They have special pads for girl dogs that go on with special dog undies. Best thing is to keep them seperated until her period passes.

Sharon asks…

If contraception means the prevention of pregnancy, then whats all the fuss about?!?

Why is the church against artificial methods and favors natural methods when BOTH have the same purpose??? Why all the BS???

Michelle answers:

By “the church” you are of course referring to the Catholic Church.

Just wanted to make that clear, and also point out that there is a world full of people who call themselves Christians, but have nothing to do with the Catholic Church.

There is nothing wrong with preventing pregnancy. That being said, not all “contraceptives” are truly contraceptives. Some are very early abortion pills that destroy a freshly fertilized egg. Since abortion is understood to be morally wrong by most who call themselves Christians, it would be wrong to abort at any point after fertilization. There is nothing wrong, however, with true contraceptives that prevent pregnancy.

The mind is also a contraceptive, as a husband and wife who are sexually obedient and faithful each other can decide when and when not to try and conceive.

Mandy asks…

pregnancy prevention…?

Does anyone know of a natural
(no pills, no patches, or condoms)
way to prevent pregnancy

Michelle answers:

I dont wanna be mean but….abstain!!! There are no “Natural” ways to not get pregnant. Pregnancy itself is a natural process which is for two people who are ready to have childeren. But since we all are human and the majority of us have premarital sex and are not ready for childeren, you can try the pull out method. I still dont even suggest that 100%. Your bf may not be able to control himself or you may get caught up in the moment and basically accidents happen and yes you can still get pregnant. But to answere your question, there are no “natural” ways other than abstinence to not get pregnant.

Your Questions About Natural Remedies In Pregnancy

Thomas asks…

Echinacea in pregnancy?

hey
i suffer from severe colds and chesty viruses when im pregnant and want to take echinacea. im wondering whether anyone has had any adverse effects, reactions or experiences from taking this herb in pregnancy. My midwife has told me not to take any vitamins or supplements in pregnancy apart from iron but i dont agree with this. Im a mother and a midwife and personally find oral iron very irritating to my digestive system and much prefer to take the natural remedy spatone which does just as well and is far kinder to the body. Im just wondering what others experiences are of natural remedies and what they have been told. Obviously there are some that are dangerous in pregnancy and women should steer clear of vitamin A supplements when pregnant but I think that it is a bit extreme and maybe even causing more harm than good in some cases to say that all supplements and natural remedies are out??

Michelle answers:

This is the warning I found:
Do not take echinacea without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant. It is not known whether echinacea will harm an unborn baby.

Call your local pharmacists or get a second opinion.

James asks…

early pregnancy….???urine infection?

Has anyone experienced urine infection in early pregnancy??if so…whats the cause of this??is ther any natural remedies other then…cranberry juice??

Michelle answers:

UTIs are very common. I am 24 weeks pregnant and had one in the very early part of my pregnancy. Its simple to treat with antibiotics… If it is TRULY an infection YOU MUST take the antibiotics as the infection could spread and it will harm your baby. Cranberry juice and lots of water has been shown to help the healing and ease discomfort.
The causes can be too much sex, not peeing before and after sex, or sometimes it just happens! Take your antibiotics, stay away from natural remedies as they haven’t been tested by the FDA and so therefore do not have to adhere to their standards. This can also harm your baby.
Hope you feel better soon!

Susan asks…

Any natural calming remedy? or any tips please?

So I’m booked in to have a c-section tuesday, but I’m so nervous, this is my first baby, and it hasn’t been a easy pregnancy, I suffer from aniexty when I get stressed or have something on my mind, and I’m finding I’m not just worrying about my c-section now I’m worrying about EVERYTHING! I’m worrying about the c-section, the baby, everyone else I love, and its just building up, I really want to relax this weekend so I’m not so stressy tuesday, is there any tips or any natural remedies I can take just to calm me down slightly?

Michelle answers:

I just asked a question similar to this, as I’m scheduled a C section on Monday. I have Panic Disorder and am soo worried about everything. I’ve already started experiencing some uncontrollable shaking at times. I’ve tried just relaxing and having my husband give me back rubs, etc. I’m going to try getting a warm bath later and see if it helps. Also, keep your mind occupied with movies, books, or hobbies. It will help a little. I’m trying to focus on the fact that I get to meet my little boy but I totally feel your pain, as it’s hard to get over when you have anxiety anyways. Good luck and I hope all goes well!

Laura asks…

A cold in pregnancy…..?

I am 8 weeks pregnant with my second child and have the worlds worst head cold. Any ideas for natural remedies that will be safe for me and my baby? Rest is obvious….looking for something new to try. Thanks!!

Michelle answers:

Chamomile tea with honey, it is so relaxing and I used it in all 4 of my pregnancies. No it won’t cure your cold, but it will make you feel a whole lot better. Make it nice and hot. Oh, and just a little extra info, most say tylenol is okay, and it is, but I know my doctor would not let me take it until I was 12 weeks, he said there is a SLIGHT chance of complications before then.
