Your Questions About Natural Pregnancy Magazine

Daniel asks…

Lower back tattoo and epidurals?

I read in a Pregnancy Magazine that some doctors have a problem with giving a women an epidural if she has a lower back tattoo, is this true? I happen to have one right where it would be given, will this affect my chances of getting the shot? I don’t know yet if I want it because I do want to give natural birth a try but I have never had a baby and really don’t know what to expect and just want to keep my options open. If I can’t have an epidural, are there other drugs or methods I can take/do to ease the pain? I am only 15 weeks and I have plenty of time but I am just curious. Thanx!

Michelle answers:

I have a lower back tattoo and got an epidural with my first child. There was no problem at all or any questioning with it. They can usually see through it or work around it. It’s not any different in my opinion than them working on someone who has a birthmark there. They know what they are doing and as popular as lower back tats are, I’m sure they do these all the time.

Betty asks…

How to explain breastfeeding to a 3 yr old?

I’m having a baby in Jan and I plan to breastfeed. I have a 3 yr old step daughter who lives with us full time. I was looking through a pregnancy magazine yesterday and she saw a picture of a baby breastfeeding. She asked why the baby was like that. I told her that’s how some mommies feed their babies. I told her that when women have a baby their boobies fill with milk to feed the baby. She then lifted up her shirt and asked if her boobies were full of milk. I told her no and that doesn’t happen until you have a baby. To make a long story short later that day she was walking around with her doll “breast feeding” it. Granted it’s a natural thing but, did I tell her too much information? Pretty soon the baby will be here and I don’t want her to mock what she sees while she’s at daycare.

Michelle answers:

This is normal, it sounds like you told her a lot of honest information in a way that she can understand. She is role playing. If she put the doll to nap, changed it, or took it for a walk in a stroller you would see this as normal. For her there is no difference, she doesn’t have the social stigma that adults have. I have seen boys of 2-3 ‘breastfeeding’ dolls, it is quite normal.

Richard asks…

Can pregnant ladies wear perfume?

I know it’s probably a very silly question but I got my sister-in-law perfume for Christmas. Can pregnant ladies wear perfume? It’s not harmful or anything is it?
Actually while I’m here I also have another question but I think I know the answer. Is it safe for pregnant ladies to bleach thier hair? I’m asking because any time in magazines a woman who has yellowy hair is pictured with her baby she always had natural coloured hair in the pic of her and the newborn. I have only ever once seen a picture of a woman with yellowy hair holding her newborn baby. She’s someone I know (distantly) The babys fine, she a healthy 5 year old now but is it bad to bleach your hair during pregnancy? Thanks!!

Michelle answers:

Yes perfume is fine so dont worry, it will probably give her a “pick me up” too, you know how nice a new perfume etc makes you feel!
I think its ok to bleach your hair but i wouldnt suggest it, i have heard mixed stories about it.
I normally dye my hair red so its darker than my normal colour but my hairdresser was pregnant and she bleached her hair white and i guess she wouldnt have if it was bad for her baby but i have no idea medically speaking. If in doubt speak to a professional, its always best to be on the safe side.

Thomas asks…

Nature isn’t pro-life…?

So if you’re involved in biological research (as I am) or even picked up a scientific magazine, you might know that the majority of pregnancies are miscarried very early on are terminated for various reasons (chromosome, uterine wall, or hormonal abnormalities). Over half of first-time pregnancies are miscarried before the person even knows it.

Basically, natural abortion. So why is it wrong if you choose it?
For those who wants articles – look up “Chemical Pregnancy“.

http://www.womens-health.co.uk/chemical.html
Also, what is meant by natural? Are we, men and women, not natural? Whether it is our decision or some supreme being, what difference does it make?
Huwos, no, this is not the best argument I can come up with. In fact, this isn’t even an argument, it’s a thought I’m getting information and POV’s on.

Arguments are things like the fact that the initial cells have no nervous system whatsoever and are not conscious, etc etc.

Believe it or not, I wasn’t picking a fight with this.
I’ll bring up a saying I heard a while back…

“If abortion is murder, then miscarriage is manslaughter.”

Discuss as you wish.
Grow up, JohnsH. If people start called pro-life the “anti-choice”, then they’ll just call the pro-choice “anti-life”. Call them what they want to be called, and maybe they’ll do the same for you.
Also, this point was brought up because God is apparently “anti-life” so to speak… so why can’t we?

Michelle answers:

In my humble opinion,
it is not a child until the fetus can survive
outside the womb without artificial means.
This means it is just a bunch of cells on
their way to become something not yet born
and to me, it is not murder.
You cannot murder something that doesn’t
exist completely, as of yet.
I know what it’s like to have an illegal abortion
and if the government takes away women’s
rights to have an abortion, they will not cease.
They will continue to have abortions, legal or not.
Many times a woman will miss a period or two,
she may even be pregnant, if her body goes into a spontaneous abortion, by a moralist way of thinking,
this could well be considered manslaughter.
What if a woman falls down a flight of stairs
or has a bad auto accident and miscarries,
is this also manslaughter.
Will the courts file suit against both parties
involved in the wreck, will the building where
the fall occurred, will the management, owners ,
contracters, and or architect be liable for the
death of this fetus,
I’ll bet they won’t even be charged,
let alone be notified.
And what about men who donate
their sperm to a sperm bank, should they
be charged with neglect, they don’t know
who got the sperm, if the child was born.
Are they going to be sued for child support?
This sperm donation may have had problems
in part of the DNA, if mixing an egg & a
sperm together causes a birth defect,
who gets the blame, will all parties involved
have to share the responsibilities of that child.
Maybe the child is born with no brain cells that
function, she could have had an abortion early
on and now this woman will be punished by
having to watch her brain-dead child kept
alive my artificial means.
These are more reasons for Pro-Choice
and I have taught my children to think of it
in these same ways.
They all know Mom had an abortion
and it’s no big deal. Somethings are just
not meant to be.

Your Questions About Natural Pregnancy Remedies

David asks…

Pregnant?! Stress?! Please help!?

My boyfriend and I have last had sex about 3 weeks ago. We always use condoms and gel that is a contraceptive. I got a UTI around that time, got prescriptions, it went away, and then came back. I’ve been using natural remedies to get rid of it. However, my last period (which came on time) was very light. Now, a month later and i should start my period in about 3 days and I just noticed some spotting/cramping which felt period related. I have no other pregnancy symptoms and I have been stressed a lot lately. Could this just be stress related? Please answer asap. Im starting to stress out more so because of all of this. Thank you!
I was only on antibiotics for about 5 days and that was around september first. I havent been on any medication besides vitamins since then. I dont think that would be the reason for a lighter period/spotting.

Michelle answers:

I doubt u are pregnant trust me dont worry about that!
When i had a uti it came back it came back from sex idk me and my fiance are perfectly healthy an have no sti’s just they can come from sex if you have already have one and what i found was after having my uti my periods were real messed up i think it might be the tablets they give you id prob go to the docters though just to check up
Goodluck

Sharon asks…

Breech baby @ 37 weeks…what was your experience like?

Hello,

We found out @ 35 weeks that our little girl is breech. We are going back on Monday for another u/s to see if she still is (I’ll be 37 weeks then). The doctor said if she is still breech @ 37 weeks then he will schedule a C-Section for 39 weeks (we will not be trying ECV due to the risks involved). At 35 weeks, she was 5lbs, 13oz and her legs are very long (her dad is 6’5). I have consistently been measuring a week ahead through out pregnancy.

My question is, how likely do you think it is that she will turn at this stage considering she weighed almost 6lbs? I’ve heard stories of babies turning at the last second but she has ridiculously long legs and I wonder if that’s a factor? And if she does turn, will I feel it? Because it doesn’t feel like she’s budged at all in two weeks to me, my lower stomach is really soft and my upper stomach is really hard and lumpy, lol.

If you had a breech baby at this stage…what was your experience like?

Also, I am fine with the c-section if I need one. I trust my doctor completely and he will be checking me every week regardless to see if she turns at the last second. He told me about all the natural remedies to try to turn her also.
We did talk about a manual version but decided against it in my case.

Michelle answers:

Actually baby will be fine. She is considered full term at 37 weeks,so anything after that is fine. That’s why when they give you a due date they always tell you two weeks before or two weeks after. I had an emergency c-section at 36 weeks bc I was in labor and when they broke my water bag my son flipped at the last second. I would try the natural remedies to turn her bc vaginal birth is so much easier to recover from for you and it is also better for baby. Good luck and congrats!

Mary asks…

Girls only please. Period question?

So my last two periods were incredibly painful on the 2nd day, but almost nothing on the first day except a bit of blood. And on the 2nd days I bled a LOT, and my whole body hurt so much I actually started crying and I couldn’t move an inch. I threw up too. I don’t know why, but after a few natural remedies I felt much better. But I don’t want to go through that again. (And another reason I’m adopting. If that’s what a PERIOD is like, what will PREGNANCY be like?)

Today’s my first day, and I was wondering if there was some way in which I can clean my body of more blood so it doesn’t hurt as bad tomorrow. Not sure if this is possible, but any suggestions?

PS: If what I’m asking for is not possible, and you have another cure for the pain, please cancel out birth control pills. I heard they’re good for cramps, but I’d never be able to get them. While my mom is very trusting of me and would completely understand, my dad’s overprotective and quite suspicious. If it’s the only option my mom will definetly be able to convince him, but I don’t want a big deal to be made out of it.
Thanks everybody 🙂
I’ll just give some other people a chance to answer before I chose a best one.
We girls have to put up with a lot don’t we?

Michelle answers:

Awww (hugs) you.
I am so glad I am past the dreaded monthlies.

There is nothing you can do to speed up the bleeding, except they say keep active.
Lay with your tummy with pillows and a nice hot water bottle.

The cramps/pain is actually your womb contracting to push out the unused lining
it prepared in the womb for a baby, which is no longer needed since pregnancy
did not take place

The pains are inevitable and it is normal for may women/girls to throw up.

Hormone tablets which is what contraceptive pills are, do more harm than good. Avoid them.

There are some pain killers specially for period pains, but you will have to ask your mother to
help you and go with you to the chemist or better still talk to the doctor first.

Robert asks…

A natural remedy for allergies due to pregnancy?

Hi! So I am ten weeks pregnant and unfortunately have the world’s worst allergies this spring. Since I am pregnant, I will not take anything medicine wise to help me even if it is “ok” because I love my child and don’t want to expose it to chemicals if at all possible. So does anyone have any advice that will help me feel back on my feet a little bit? If it helps my most bothersome symptoms are a runny nose and sneezing and a dry irritating cough. Thank you all so much for your advice!

Michelle answers:

All I can think of is avoiding the allergens as much as possible.
Keep indoor triggers to a minimum, try and avoid going outdoors in the early morning hours to prevent unnecessary exposure to pollen, which is usually worst during this time. Avoid spreading pollen through your home by washing off as soon as you come in from outside. Or at the very least, bathe before going to sleep to keep pollen out of your bed.

Short of wearing a mask, glasses if your eyes are affected and having nice comforting drinks, sucking honey and lemon candy I am stuck!

In such situations I always keep saying to myself ‘it will pass’!

Your Questions About Natural Remedies Pregnancy

Joseph asks…

What natural remedy against headaches can be taken during the first trimester of pregnancy?

Michelle answers:

You have 2 acupuncture points that go to the head in your hands. What you need to do is this……….the “web” between your forefinger and your thumb……..pinch that web of skin as hard as you can stand it for a few seconds and then do the other hand. It will relieve your headache 🙂 CONGRATS on your new little life…BLESSINGS !!!!

Mary asks…

I’m pregnant (1 month) and have had awful migraines but don’t want to take meds. Any good natural remedies?

I know some natural (or herbal) substances are inappropriate during pregnancy, but are there any safe ideas available?

Michelle answers:

I’m in the third month and I feel your pain! My doctor said regular tylenol is ok to take. Of course, if your like me, it doesn’t help much. Just try to rest as often as you can. Your body needs the extra rest.

I do agree with the lavender remedy. They make these stress pillow rings filled with lavender you warm up in the microwave and put on your neck. They help too, but of course resting is still needed. Good luck and congrats.

Daniel asks…

are there any natural ways to reduce crankyness or moodswings during pregnancy?

i just found out im pregnant and prior to this i was considering getting on some type of anti anxiety medication.. im wondering if there are any natural foods, remedies, or calming herbs that helped anxiety and crankyness and are safe to ingest while pregnant. also.. green tea and sushi, i consume alot of both.. do i need to cut either of those from my diet??

Michelle answers:

Try exercizing. It releases positive endorphines into your bloodstream and helps control your hormone fluctuations. Streatch, go for walks, dance, ect.

Charles asks…

What’s your remedy for pregnancy heartburn?

I have terrible heartburn and with my last pregnancy, I took lots of Tums which my doc said was ok, but I was wondering what natural remedies work just as good. Thanks!

Oh-it’s not just spicy foods I have to avoid-I get heartburn from even drinking water!! It’s everything that causes it~

Michelle answers:

OMG! I know exactly what you mean. Even if I dont eat something (when I went for a glucose test) I get heartburn. I have been drinking milk and that helps tons. And, peppermints also help. I keep those soft ones at my desk and suck on those. But, like you said water even brings it on too. So, I hope these help you. Good luck!

Your Questions About Natural Pregnancy Products

William asks…

Which stretch mark cream/oil do you find is the best?

im 20 weeks pregnant and for few weeks now ive had awful stretch marks over my tummy and hips..
ive been using palmers cocoa butter for pregnancy and seems to have faded them a little.
but does anyone else know of any natural alternitives or any other shop brought product?
ive tried bio oil and it doesnt seem to work as well as i thought it would!!

Michelle answers:

There are creams out there that can help get rid of your stretch marks, but you need to find the right one.

I found this on the site I put in the source box below:

Things to look for in a stretch mark cream

There are a lot of creams and ointments out there that claim to remove stretch marks. The best way to fight stretch marks is to increase your skins flexibility before your stretch marks start appearing by using a topical cream on the area before the skin starts to show stretch marks. If you already have stretch marks, hope is not lost. There are creams out there that contain ingredients that help heal the skin while minimizing scar tissue.

Some of the key ingredients that you will want to make sure your cream contains are:

Vitamin A Palmitate

Vitamin A is an essential vitamin and is best known for having positive effects on vision. However Vitamin A is just as important to the largest organ; the skin.

Clinical studies have shown vitamin A to have properties that block the absorption of harmful UVA and UVB rays, as well as a stimulating effect on cell regeneration. It has been clinically shown to improve the appearance of striae (stretch marks) and regulate epidermal (skin) cell growth.

Aloe Vera Extract

Aloe vera has been shown in clinical studies to have a positive effect on wound healing and holds anti-inflammatory properties.

As stretch marks start out as microscopic tears in skin layers due to overstretching of the dermis, aloe vera helps heal these small wounds without causing scar tissue to form, effectively preventing the appearance of stretch marks. Aloe vera has been used for thousands of years by the Egyptians, Romans, Greeks, Arabs, Indians and Chinese to decrease the appearance of scars and to moisturize and heal skin.

This extract from the aloe leaf protects skin from environmental factors and promotes skin regeneration.

Grapefruit Seed Extract

Grapefruit seed extract is a natural antibiotic used for many different types of skin ailments. It is a powerful ingredient to aid in the healing of skin damage. Grapefruit seed extract helps to restore damaged collagen and elastin, which strengthens and retextures the skin.

As collagen and elastin are responsible for the skins elasticity, improving and stimulating production of the connective tissue cells will prevent skin from tearing and thus prevent the formation of stretch marks. The condition of the skins connective tissue also dictates how well the skin contracts after pregnancy. So not only does this compound improve the condition of your stretching skin, after the delivery it will also aid in the contraction of your skin to its previous appearance.

DL-Penthenol

DL-Penthenol is the scientific name for pro-vitamin B5. It has healing properties on damaged skin as it works to improve the structure of both the lower and upper skin layers. DL-Panthenol soothes skin while stimulating cell growth and differentiation.

This ingredient aids in the regeneration of the skin, therefore aiding in reducing the appearance of existing stretch marks by replacing the scar tissue with new skin cells. It also acts to prevent stretch marks by promoting collagen and elastin production, which allows your skin to stretch without rupturing and causing stretch marks.

A cream that has shown to be highly effective at preventing stretch marks as well as healing stretch marks that you already have is Stretch Mark Prevention by Revitol.

Whether you are afraid that stretch marks may be in your future of if they are already a part of your life, the Stretch Mark Prevention cream is the product you will want on your side!

Mary asks…

I have frizzy wavy hair. I need tips on maintaining and easy styling without harming my hair.?

My hair used to be curly, but after 2 pregnancies I noticed a differance. Its just wavy and frizzy now. No matter how much amounts of mousse or anything I use. I try and stay away from expensive products, or products with alcohol. Meaning hairspray, gel, etc…
Im trying to keep it natural. My front hair especially seems a little fried.

Michelle answers:

You dont even wanna know what my hair looks like. Its curly, its frizzy and its super dry. Imagine a birds nest.. Thats my hair. Ive tried tons of products and finally settled for a good coconut conditioner. Anti-frizz products vary so its about trying some and seeing what you think works best for you. Some may say try this and try that. Ive tried cheap ones and expensive ones. One thing I can say is, keep it well conditioned. Try leave in conditioners. I have found they do help. Get your hair trimmed regularly as you maybe prone to split ends easy. I hope you find what you are looking for.. Best of luck.

Thomas asks…

What to do with this weight?

I had my son 6 months ago and I am having a problem losing the weight. I had a high risk pregnancy that required bedrest which helped to pack on the lbs even more, at delivery I was almost 240lb coming from 180. now I am 200lbs and need good advice in losing weight. I have been exercising with little results. I heard about a natural diet product called Slimor + acai which my doctor told me about. what do u guys think about this and does anyone have any personal experience with this product???

Michelle answers:

There is a LOT of snake-oil on the market today and personally I would avoid any product that claims to be a “weight loss” product.

There are things you can do that are very simple really but do make a difference.
Cut out ALL soda-pop type drinks (even “diet soda”) just drink water.
Also for those snack munchie bits, keep on-hand stuff like carrot sticks or celery
VERY satisfying without all the processed sugar & fat of the commercial type munchies

Also note that some people hit a wall with their weight loss attempts and its normal to stop loosing for a time, (you may want to bring this up to your Dr.) but you can get back to loosing those surplus pounds…. GOOD LUCK … & don’t give up!

Mark asks…

Is God really eternal and just?

If you read Genesis chapter 38 … Onan didn’t do anything wrong, he didn’t want to bring a child into the world of his brother, whom the Lord considered wicked. So why in the dictionary has man’s ways placed derogatory definition to onanism? Then why did God allow that?

In Genesis chapter 38: Why didn’t God abolish Judea for conceiving a child with his daughter-in-law who hid a twin pregnancy from the Lord, and then pay her as a prostitute? These children , technically, would have been products of incest …

In a natural spiritual meditation: Why did God allow reincarnation of Judea in some form as Judas … who would sell out a friend for 30 shenkels … Shouldn’t the issues have been handled with Judea to prevent wickedness?

Is God really eternal and just?

Michelle answers:

Yes, God is eternal and just. There are many places in Scripture where it may not seem that way, but that either means the verses have not been properly understood. Rather than explain each instance, I’ll pretend they really say no more than they appear to say and that they really are as unjust as you describe. That casts doubt on Scripture, not God. If Scripture does not help you to grow in your relationship with God, then it is okay to leave it alone. It is not for everyone.

There are lots of instances of injustice within time, but ultimately, God prevails.

Lizzie asks…

how should i handle this?

my fiance and i are talking natural family planning classes. i am catholic and he is baptist. catholics believe only is natural family planning. baptists believe in using condoms. since we are two different religions how do we handle this matter. should i convert? we are 22 year old about to be 23 and we cant afford children on our salaries and we are afraid of pregnancy b/c of our honeymoon. afraid to use NFP not knowing if we would do it right and wind up being parents at too young of an age and wanting more time for each other before we have kids
we are getting married in jan

Michelle answers:

Congratulations on your engagement. I can totally understand where you are coming from! My husband & I started taking NFP classes before our wedding and I was sure that we were going to screw up and have babies right away. It wasn’t until I had used the method for a few months that I realized that I did understand how to do it, I understood the science behind it, and then I started feeling really comfortable and trusting of the method. We did a lot of praying that my fertile time would not be during our honeymoon and thank goodness it wasn’t.

Did you just start taking the classes? If so, then realize that the first month is a little scary. You’re not really sure what you are doing and if you are doing it right. Once you chart for a few months, I think you will see that it starts becoming second nature. The charting rules become easy to interpret and you start to feel comfortable.

After using NFP for 2 years we felt so strongly about how much it had done for us that we trained to become NFP teachers. One thing I always challenged our engaged couples to do is to play – “Would we have sex?” As you are charting, make a note of the days when you would feel ‘safe’ having sex and which days you wouldn’t. Then at the end of the month look your chart over and make sure that you know which days were safe and which weren’t. Talk to your NFP teacher about this as well. I think after a few months you will realize that you can do this and that the science behind the method will work.

I would also tell my engaged students that they could call me as much as they needed to after they were out of my class to review charts and see if they were in the safe time or not. I wouldn’t want any student to leave my class not feeling sure that he/she knew exactly when they were fertile/infertile in their cycle.

We got married at 23 as well… We actually got married the same day as my husband’s graduation. Had no money in savings, moved twice the first year, I really know where you are coming from! But by the time we got married, I really didn’t have any qualms about using NFP as a newly married woman. I think you will feel that way too. If not, then keep talking to your NFP teacher, keep asking questions until you feel like you have mastered charting.

NFP actually has better effectiveness rates than condoms, so don’t feel like you have to leave NFP to have better effectiveness. NFP when used correctly can have up to 99% effectiveness rates and some of the newer studies put user effectiveness right around the 96% mark. Higher than condoms. If you use it right, it will work. Most of the people who get pregnant using NFP do so because they had sex when they knew they shouldn’t. Or because they didn’t learn the method well enough. You will have enough charts by the time you are married to understand the method well.

How does your fiance feel about NFP? My husband was very skeptical at first, but once I let him do the charting and he could see the temperature rise for himself, he was sold. Men are very logical. If you let him help with the data analysis, he will probably become more supportive as well. Plus it means no hormones for you and no barriers for him.

I wish you all the best on your upcoming wedding. I hope my answer was helpful. I really do know where you are coming from and I will keep you & your fiance in my prayers!

ADDED: I just have to add in response to one of the other answers – just because the human body doesn’t always work perfectly doesn’t mean that NFP can’t work. I’m sure the questioner knows that because she is taking the classes, but I want to clarify because there are SO MANY people who don’t understand this. NFP is not based on calendars or usuals, NFP is based on the signs a woman’s body is giving her day to day. Her body will tell her if she is entering her fertile phase early and it will tell her if she is ovulating late. There is no guesswork to NFP. That’s why the effectiveness levels are so high… Higher than use of condoms. Sorry, but those are the facts. There may be a lot of women who conceive at the wrong time of the month, but if they are smart about NFP and follow the rules that will not happen. A woman’s body doesn’t just up and ovulate at random times without giving warning through her cervical mucus.

William asks…

What would have happened if Lina Medina had to give birth vaginally?

Lina Medina is famous in the medical community for being the youngest mother in recorded history. At the age of 5 years she gave birth (by Caesarean section) to a healthy baby boy.

*Note, the facts presented are not open to speculation. Lina Medina DID exist and she DID have a child at the age of 5. Due to a condition known as precocious puberty her body was “ready” for impregnation at an extremely early age. Obviously the means of her impregnation bear thinking about (rape is all but certain), but no one was ever proven guilty.

When Lina first became pregnant, her parents didn’t realize what was happening. They knew that her abdomen was getting larger, but they suspected a tumor or some other problem, because pregnancy in a 5-year-old is unheard of. They tried many local remedies, but when nothing worked they brought her to a doctor, who confirmed that she was 7 months pregnant. The baby was delivered through a Caesarean section.

Now, my question is a hypothetical one. What if the parents hadn’t thought to go see a doctor within 9 months of the impregnation (remember that they had no idea she was pregnant until after the doctor said so – they thought it was a tumor)? Lina Medina could easily have gone into labor in her home. Since she essentially had the body of a 5-year-old (with the exception of slightly denser bones and more developed breasts, and obviously the ability to become pregnant), my question could be rephrased as asking “what would the effect of a natural childbirth be on a 5-year-old child?” An answer seems obvious at first – she wouldn’t live through it. But I’m looking for an actual medical analysis of this scenario. I know that Lina Medina likely would not have lived through the experience, but might the baby have? Would it have been able to pass through the birth canal, or would it have been too small? Would Lina’s pelvis have broken, or would the baby have been squashed to death (sorry for the image) while trying to fit through? What exactly would Lina Medina die of? Internal bleeding?

I’m especially interested in hearing the opinion of an obstetrician if that is at all possible.

Michelle answers:

The baby wouldn’t even be able to come down the birth canal and she would of been screaming in pain while her body was in labor untill they figured out what was going on, which they would have. Even adult women have problems pushing our larger babies, although they know what is going on so they can get a c-section without the circus of figuring out what was happening. I didn’t hear about this, its sad though!

Paul asks…

My mom is pregnant with multiples, how can I help my lil brother? and some other questions?

Hi, i am 16 years old boy and my brother is 6 years old. Recently some friends and relatives start getting pregnant (my aunt, my girlfriend´s mom) so my mother also wanted another child. She is 39 years old and after going with a doctor, the doctor said that the only way she could get pregnant was by artificial methods. I don´t know what method did my parents choose, but after some weeks my mom finally get pregnant. I have talked a lot with my parents since everything related with this started, so I know almost everything about it. One of the things that I learn in these days that the women that get pregnant with artificial methods have a high chance to be a multiple pregnancy. My mom is only 7 weeks pregnant, but a few day ago I went with my mom to the doctor (because my dad was on a business trip) and the doctor said to my mom that he was almost sure that this was a multiple pregnancy, but he don´t know if are twins or triplets (but he also said that were some chances to be quads! )

I am really happy about this because I like babies since I started to help my girlfriend with her baby sister, but my brother is real unhappy about having new brothers or sisters. I am very close with him since he turned 3, because when he was a baby I didn’t´t wanted to be near him because I felt jealous (the same way that he is feeling now) He doesn´t want to see my parents at all and the only person that he talks is with me. He said to me that he was angry with my parents because our life was perfect and they have to arruined it with the babies. I said to him that he can´t return the time and he had to accept the babies or it will be worse for everyone. I think that after i talk with him he had change something his mind, but i don´t think that he is already fine because he spend a lot of time alone (also in school) , he didn´t want to play soccer as the way we played before and principally i have seen that he has been masturbating a lot since everything started. I saw him masturbating only one or two times before but now i see that he masturbates many times in the day. How can I help him?

Well, that was my question about my bro, but i have some questions about my mom´s pregnancy?

Will she have trouble with her multiple pregnancy because of her age (39)?
How long (in weeks) is a twins or triplets healthy pregnacy?
Like at which week her belly will become visible? (right know is very no matter that are multiples because my mom is thin and tall)
Will she be able to have to have a natural birth?
Is normal that she is feeling very bad and having a lot of sickness right now? (more than with my brother as i can remember)
What are the chances that the babies (2,3 or 4) will be all girls? (i want it)

I think that is everything for the moment, I appreciate all your answers and I hope that you will help my family and me, if you can also reccomend me a pregnacy forum i will also appreciate it a lot

Thanks everybody for your time,

David

Michelle answers:

I would talk with your little brother more about how he is feeling. He probably feels like the two of you are in the same boat so to speak. Tell him the story about how you felt the same way when he was born but now you are so happy to have a little brother. And maybe talk to your parents too, they might be so busy with the joys of being pregnant that they don’t notice your brother is being so isolated. You and your parents can encourage him the whole time your mom is pregnant about how he is going to be a big brother and really make a big deal about how great it will be. As far as him masturbating I think that is strange for a 6 year old, i would defiantly talk to your mother about it or your dad if you feel more comfortable. In about 4-6 weeks they will do an ultrasound and see how many heartbeats there are. That is very exciting. It’s good that you are so excited. Your parents will need all the help they can get. For the questions about your ma, if she goes around 32 weeks I think that’s about right with multiples, and yes she could have complications because of her age, even with having just one baby she could have complications. Her belly could start showing anytime, each woman and each pregnancy is different. Some people look pregnant at 2 months and others don’t look pregnant at 9 months so there is no real answer for that. Only time will tell. More than likely she won’t have a natural birth with multiples. If she had a c-section with you or your brother than for sure it would be a c-section anyways. Yes it’s very normal to be sick in the first 3 months and very tired to so ask her if she needs help with anything, ask her that everyday. I know your dad is there but if he is gone on trips or working. If she starts acting really moody don’t blame her that happens because your hormones are so off balance when you are pregnant and she can’t help it. I know I acted crazy when I was pregnant. The chances of her having a girl, it’s just whatever God gives you. She could have two boys or one boy one girl, 2 boys and 1 girl, 4 boys. Who knows. Only time will tell with that too. You sound very responsible and mature for your age. Good luck with everything!

Your Questions About Natural Ivf

Chris asks…

would u have preferred to have been conceived the natural way or through IVF?

i consider myself lucky as i have been conceived through IVF and not the ‘dirty’ way

do i have a point?

Michelle answers:

Does it really matter? As long as you were born healthy that’s all that matters.

William asks…

do you think Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lopez had natural conception or IVF ?

it just seems like a long shot …..

Michelle answers:

I know for sure Angelina Jolie did, and from what I hear at work, so did Jennifer. She claims in the media that her babies were conceived “the old fashioned way” but I have my doubts.

The babies’ father (or was it grandfather?) going on TV and carrying on about twins running in his family was ridiculous and irrelevant, since there is no paternal link to twinning at all.

Moreover, even if twins are conceived naturally, the fact they “run in families” only marginally increases the odds – the majority of twins just happen spontaneously with no apparent family history.

James asks…

any solution for blocked fallopian tubes besides ivf preferably natural or herbal?

Michelle answers:

Im also going for an x-ray on Tuesday ‘cos my doctor thinks mine are blocked as well. Wish me luck and please let me know if you find a solution.

George asks…

Is 37 too old for a woman to concieve? Does IVF work for a 40 year old woman?when do chances for natural…?

pregnancy diminish for a woman in her thirties or forties, thanx you guys for answering this barrage of questions.

Michelle answers:

It’s not old at all. I’ll be 40 when I give birth to my 3rd child, so 37 is a piece of cake.

Your Questions About Natural Pregnancy Book

Daniel asks…

Pregnancy books: Looking for one that…. (please read)?

DO NOT WANT BOOK THAT:

– tells me I’m stupid for breastfeeding and for having a natural birth
– going to make me cry, because it tells me just because I breathe or move I’m hurting my baby
– boring and dry to read, like a doctor’s book 😛

DO WANT:
– makes me happy for being pregnant, gives me tips for staying healthy, tips for those hard times,
– has got funny notes, maybe like Belly Laughs! The Naked Truth!

RULED OUT:
What to expect when you’re expecting.

THINKING OF:
Great Expectations by Sandy Jones
Pregnancy for Dummies.

WATCHING SOON:
The Business of Being Born, just because I really hate health businesses 😉

I want something I can easily refer to, say, “Oh! Nosebleed! Is it normal during pregnancy?” and I can go to the book and easily find out.

So what do you think?

Michelle answers:

Check out “Our Bodies, Ourselves: Pregnancy and Birth”

It’s a wonderful fact based book that reviews all aspects of pregnancy, including natural childbirth. It had testimonials throughout the book from women in each circumstance described.

I’ve read the entire thing and learned so much!

*** OH and by the way, ‘The Business of Being Born’ is FABULOUS. It made me absolutely positive about my decision to have a natural childbirth!

David asks…

Can I demand to have a Natural Birth even tho I “May” need a C-Section”?

I am 23 and pregnant with my first. I have had a text book pregnancy with no problems besides the heart burn and other symptoms.

But because the baby is feet first, they may do a c-section.
I see NO reason to do a c-section. I don’t want one and will do everything in my power NOT to have one. I want a natural labor (maybe pain meds)…I have till October but according to “Liability laws” or whatever crap they have, they will have to do a C-section if she does not go down head first.

People have been having kids for thousands of years..Why now is birth so “complicated and dangerous”

Can and I say NO C-section or do I have no control of my birthing experience.? We have very good health insurance-Blue Cross. So paying for whatever is needed will not be a problem.

Any advice.
I don’t want to sound like a Selfish mom.
I want what is best for my Daughter no matter what. But I think it’s way to soon to be saying things when I am only 25 weeks.

I love my daughter and her well being comes first, but also a c-section is a major operation.

Michelle answers:

If she’s feet first you need a c-section…If you REFUSE and throw a tantrum about it you are putting YOUR BABY at risk during birth just for your own selfish reasons……Doctors do things for a reason, your doc. Went to school and had been delivering babies long enough to know what is and isn’t safe for you and the baby.

I found out today at 39wks that I am most likely going to have to have a c-section because my pelvic bone is shaped abnormally and they are afraid the baby will get stuck..Do they know for sure? NO, do I want a natural birth? YES, but i’m not willing to risk my unborn child for my own wants so c-section it is for me.

I’m not trying to be mean, I am an LPN in RN school so I do know a lot of the risks, you or the baby could die or have serious complications….Just keep that in mind.

A c-section is a major surgery but if it’s the safest then it’s worth it. And since you are only 25wks the chances of her staying feet down is slim, i’m sure she’ll change positions before you go into labor, the doc. Was probably just letting you know just in case.

Nancy asks…

Me and my husband are following natural planning and I what I want to know is that can I have sex when I am no?

I am 26 and my husband is 33. I have checked on net and read books and according to that I know the days I am fertile and when I will ovulate but what I want to know is that can i have sex after ovulation. People only say about when you will be fertile how about telling when to have sex when we want to avoid pregnancy.

Michelle answers:

Now I will let you know about safe and unsafe periods.
Suppose your period starts on 1st April, and your cycle is 28 days,
Your expected date of next period is 28th April
Deduct 14 from expected date, it is 14th April, it is your ovulation day.
Sperms is shed in vagina will remain active for about 4 days could be more
Any intercourse done from 10th April, to 18th April may get pregnancy.
You see April 1st to 8th is safe, 9th to 18 th is fertile and again 19th to 27th is safe
I have made it easy for you to calculate yourself about your pregnancy.

Mandy asks…

Your experiences after childbirth and labor?

How did you feel after you gave birth (physically and mentally) Did you have a c-section or vaginal? Natural or epidural? I am 29 weeks 5days and trying my best to mentally prepare myself for the child birthing process…I know you can never REALLY be prepared as there is no such thing as a story book pregnancy and birth but I guess it makes me feel better due to fear of the unknown! Thanks in advance

Michelle answers:

My birth experience was FANTASTIC!!

I was completely horribly scared of having a vaginal birth (I seriously had horrible nightmares about it my entire pregnancy), and really wanted a c-section, but knew there had to be a medical necessity for it. Thankfully I did end up needing a c-section as my son never dropped into the correct position. I had no labor at all. The surgery went perfectly, and other than some expected discomfort, there was nothing I would have had differently. The surgery was a breeze…. I was up and around the following morning and had no complications at all…..the worst part of the entire thing was getting the epidural (because the resident doing it tried 2 times unsuccessfully so the attending physician finally had to do it a 3rd time for it to work). But even that part wasn’t that bad…… It hurt because the position I had to sit in, not the needle in my back.

If you do need a c-section, definitely don’t be afraid of it….. However, don’t be like me and be afraid of vaginal birth either…. I’ve had plenty of friends who pushed 3 times, had a baby, had no stitches and were almost feeling 100% normal within a few days.

As for physically…..you’re going to be sore either way it happens, and TIRED…. Because it takes a lot out of you. Mentally, I was elated….but still cried all the time about the littlest thing. The adrenaline that you have that first couple weeks is amazing…… I eventually crapped out and was exhausted, but I tell you what….. I never knew I’d be up for loads of laundry and cleaning the house top to bottom a few days after having major surgery and with the lack of sleep from having a newborn. (keep in mind, if you have a c-section you are NOT to lift anything heavier than your child in their carseat…. So no over-doing it on cleaning etc.)

Hope that helps, congrats on the pregnancy, and blessings on a perfect delivery!!

Your Questions About Natural Pregnancy Remedies

Mark asks…

how to get my breasts back after all the breast feeding is done with?

my baby is 2 now and it’s been a while that i stopped breastfeeding. i’ve lost all my pregnancy weight and in the process seem to have lost my breasts too. they weren’t big to start, got bigger during pregnancy, and now it seems they are even smaller than before completely deflated. how can i get them fuller looking again? any natural remedies?
i don’t feel comfortable with my breast the way they are no they don’t even look like they belong to me they look like saggy lumps of skin or the breasts of a really aged woman and i’m only 27 . i don’t mind the streach marks on my belly i’m proud to be a mother, i just would also like to feel confidence in my body again. i don’t want supermodel breasts, just want them not to look like a saggy used pastry bag. 🙁

Michelle answers:

I breastfed 4 babies and now my breasts are bigger than ever! They never retain their pre-pregnant state ever again.

Lizzie asks…

How did you know you had PCOS?

I have heard that PCOS is very common.
I’m kind of getting scared I might have it, even though I don’t have those symptoms:
Hirsutism, thin hair, irregular periods…NONE.
My period started at the age of 11, but it’s normal for them to be irregular at the time( Or I never even payed attention to them). From 14 and on my periods have always been regular(Every 28 days).
I have gotten pregnant twice in less than a year. My first pregnancy took me 3 months to get pregnant but miscarried at 12 weeks(Baby died at 6w) it was a missed miscarriage in February 09. Then I started TTC again and got pregnant 4 months later with my baby boy. The whole pregnancy was risky..I had spotting and bleeding all the time having to rush to the ER. The doctor discovered I had placenta previa(Complete previa). At 19 weeks I had placental abruption and ended up giving birth at 23 weeks due to that. My baby boy died after birth, they couldnt save him 🙁 This happened in January this year. After those two events I went to another doctor and he told me that I must have had infection (Which I did test positive for infection UTI). I really keep thinking that it was my other doctor’s fault because I had a lot of back pain and he never prescribed me any medication..He wanted all natural remedies. The thing is I want to know why I havent conceived? I have been TTC since march with no luck. Could that mean PCOS or that has nothing to do with it? My new doctor did check my uterus and said it looked just fine and he did some testing and said that I’m very healthy, but the thought of PCOS runs in my mind.

Any feedback? Opinions?

Thanks 🙂

Michelle answers:

I am soo sorry for you losses. The only thing I can say and it’s something you probably dont want to hear is it will happen when your body is ready. Having a miscarraige let alone what you went through is so hard on your body. I truly beleive that your body will get pregnant when it’s ready. Have you talked to you doctor about Clomid? Even though I ovulate regualry and can get pregnant easily my gyno is having me try it this month. Like you I did the tests and am healthy. So, last resort is trying to help me ovulate better producing more mature and healthier eggs. I guess Clomid can help me so I am giving it shot. Just an idea 🙂 Good luck with everything and lots of HEALHTY baby dust to you!

Nancy asks…

Primitive pregnancy tests: what kind of folk remedy-diagnostics tests were used to determine pregnancy…….?

Before modern tests and before it becomes obvious…?

When a woman missed a period and wasn’t sure, how could they test to determine if it was due to pregnancy or stress?

What kind of detectable chemical changes take place?

What materials would be used to detect the changes…?

I’m guessing some kind of plant or other natural (relatively unprocessed) material.

What plant or animal would it come from?

What substitutes might be used if the most commonly used variety was not available?

DISCLAIMER:

NO ACTUAL SEX WILL TAKE PLACE DURING THE WRITING OF THIS NOVEL.

So hurry up and answer, because if you don’t, there’s a lot of frustrated couples out there who are starting to get angry, and I won’t lift a finger to protect you from them.

Michelle answers:

The ancient Egyptians watered bags of wheat and barley with the urine of a possibly pregnant woman. Germination indicated pregnancy, and based on what type of grain sprouted they predicted the gender of the fetus. Hippocrates suggested that a woman who had missed her period should drink a solution of honey in water at bedtime. Resulting abdominal distention and cramps would indicate the presence of a pregnancy. Avicenna and many physicians after him in the Middle Ages performed uroscopy, a nonscientific method to evaluate urine. Selmar Aschheim and Bernhard Zondek introduced testing based on the presence of hCG in 1928.[7]

In the Aschheim and Zondek test an infantile female mouse was injected subcutaneously with urine of the person to be tested, and some time later the mouse was killed and dissected. Presence of ovulation indicated that the urine contained hCG and meant that the person was pregnant. A similar test was developed using immature rabbits, the rabbit test. Here, too, it was necessary to kill the animal to check its ovaries. An improvement arrived with the frog test that was still used in the 1950s. A female frog was injected with serum or urine of the patient. If the frog produced eggs within the next 24 hours, the test was positive. In the frog test, the animal remained alive, and could be used again.

Robert asks…

Information or personal advice about uterine fibroids.?

There pretty common so I hope I get a little help. I have them and I am pretty sure that whats causes me to bleed for months at a time when I have my menstrual cycle instead of one week. I’d really like to know if there are any natural remedies anyone has tried that reduces the symptoms. I don’t have insurance right now but this bleeding is driving me crazy! As far as child bearing, has anyone had trouble because of the fibroids? It’s my dream to have kids so I’d like to know if I’m in for a long road to pregnancy or if it “may” not be a huge problem….If you have them and have gotten a medical procedure done, I’d like to know your expierience. Anything at all you’d like to say on the issue, please do. So far I’ve only talked to a doctor and looked up things on the internet. I have yet to talk to a person who has these fibroids. Thank you very much.

Michelle answers:

I had huge multiple fibroids even before i got pregnant. I’m 28.
I had my first surgery when i was 24, doctor removed 28 of them. But my bleeding didn’t improve. I was so weak and anemic. Doctor told me try to get pregnant after 6 months of that surgery, but within these 6 months fibroids grew again. Doctor said i need another surgery but this time they may not be able to save the uterus.
I was lucky and got pregnant just before the surgery.
The fibroids grew even bigger during my pregnancy. My tummy was huge
The pregnancy was so painful.
I couldn’t hold the baby after 30 weeks. I had c section and the baby was born.
The baby was tiny, the operation took long time to find the baby under so many fibroids.
At last doctor removed the whole uterus, there was no other option.
My baby is fine now, I’m relieved cause i don’t have that bleeding which kept me away from work for days.

Your Questions About Natural Remedies Pregnancy

Richard asks…

Natural remedies or oils to heal anal fissures?

I just had my second baby 4 weeks ago and had an episotomy. This caused hemis and now an anal fissure. My doctor would only give me hydrocortisone cream but this is not working for the pain. Since my pregnancy I have been taking Ducosate pills (oil) to soften my stools but that also hasn’t helped. Any suggestions on natural remedies or oils I could take to relieve symptoms and heal the fissure? I am nursing as well so it has to be baby friendly. Thanks for the advice!

Michelle answers:

I’ve been right were you are! It’s not a great feeling at all. Read this article at http://www.worst-pregnancy-symptoms.com/Hemorrhoids-during-pregnancy.html and maybe it will be useful in some way. I hope that this will go away soon for you.

Sandy asks…

Do you know any natural cold remedies?

I’m 17 weeks pregnant and I’m sick. =( My son brings home every germ he possibly can from preschool and I caught a bad one! My doc put me on an antibiotic and an inhaler. I still feel crummy though. If anyone knows any natural remedies for cough or congestion or sore throat I would love to hear about them. (I’m really trying to avoid taking a lot of over the counter meds). Thanks!

ps. I’m putting this is the Pregnancy section vs. the Health section because I want to know what other moms have done before. Not just the average Joe.

Michelle answers:

Take a hot shower. Drink an herbal tea such as mint, chamomile, or warm lemon water. Run a humidifier, if you don’t have one you will want one when baby arrives! For bad congestion, Vicks makes an herbal rub for infants (works just as well for adults with less stink!). Suck on hard candy or vit. C drops for your sore throat. Saline nose drops will help clear your nose. Hope you feel better soon!

William asks…

Any all natural remedies for a tooth ache for 35 week pregnant lady?

I am 35 weeks pregnant, and have a severe tooth ache in the back of my mouth. I have never had a cavity before but all signs point to one!!! I have an appointment with my dentist in a couple weeks, but was wondering if until then any one had any tried and true homeopathic remedies for a toothache(thats safe during pregnancy!)

THANKS GUYS!

Michelle answers:

Before i was pregnant i had a REALLY bad toothache, and I mean bad. Because i only had tylenol at the time which doesnt work for me, I used a clove, they say to chew on it, also you can put meat tenderizer (sp?) on it too, if there is a hole in your tooth somewhere even if you cant see it, the tenderizer can go to the nerve and numb it. Tylenol is safe to use during pregnancy, but i know for a toothache you may have to take more than one and take them often and so i understand why you dont want to do that. Also, my dentish, when my tooth was abcessed, amde me wait a few months to see me, and i was pissed, so i called a dental surgeon, and they took me right away, and had the tooth out in 30 seconds as opposed to half an hour the dentist takes. Not saying to have it removed, but they may be able to do something for you. Or if you live near a city, call dentists there, when I did that (i live in a rural area) the city dentists took me in within a couple of days.

Linda asks…

Is there a natural remedy for morning sickness in pregnancy ? ?

I have tried with ginger ale & biscuits and none seems to work . Initially there was a small percentage of improvement but after couple of days I am facing the same ongoing sickness. Can someone help me please ?

Michelle answers:

I had really bad morning sickness and i thought i had tried everything until i asked the same question on here and someone told me to try preggie pops and they worked great for me. You can get them at BabiesRUs or at Motherhood Maternity. Wish you the best of luck finding something that works for you i know it can be though.
