Your Questions About Food Network

Linda asks…

Why do chefs on food work channel always lick their fingers and touch the food they serve?

I love watching the food network channel, but don’t think I’d want to eat any of the food. It seems like sanitation would be the first thing they learn to cook. I just watched chopped and this arrogant chef kept sticking her pinkie in the food and tasting… then the judges had to eat it. Yuck!
I see this happen on the other shows as well.

Michelle answers:

If you’ve ever worked in any food service establishment, you would be aware of the requirements for the towels they use to have a min level of chlorine bleach in them/in the water….
While i agree w/ you that the shows seem to preswent the idea that these chefs are tawdry fools who think they’re so wonderful that any of us mortals would simply love to drink their spit, this is inaccurate. I began work in a 5 star country club w/ 1 of 2 master chefs in the country at the time. No one in the kitchen did this.

Sharon asks…

Please tell me the name program that was from Food Network Canada that was about the catering at weddings?

It was about the frenetic pace of the few days leading up to a Canadian wedding and the process at the catering hall or venue. It was syndicated on Food Network USA a few years ago.

Michelle answers:

“Food Network Caters Your Wedding’ ?
I’m more into history than television, that’s the closest I could find to a match.

Also apparently there was a show called “I do, Let’s Eat” that showcases wedding catering in the Niagra region.

Carol asks…

Do you know where i can find a book about food and feelings connected?

one time i think it was unwrapped on the food network it talked about a couple that wrote a book about how different foods bring out different emotions. Like women love chocolate, well there is a chemical in chocolate that brings out the feeling of love. There was different things like that. I saw it awhile ago and couldn’t find it on the food networks website. It seem very interesting and i want to put it on my christmas list, whats the name of the book?

One book I have is great:

Amy Reiley, author of Fork Me, Spoon Me: The Sensual Cookbook

And there is one of my favorite chefs from the food network: Nigella Lawson. She always talks about the affect of food to the body and mind. She has also some very good books out there.

Robert asks…

Are there any major food and wine festivals I can take my mother to for a Christmas present?

My mom loves to cook and absolutely loves the Food Network and Top Chef. I had this great idea to take her to the Pebble Beach Food and Wine Festival in April, 2011 for a great Christmas present this year. Unfortunately, all the events and packages are sold out! I’m trying to find something similar to take her to. The budget and location aren’t an issue, I just want her to have a great Christmas present because she really deserves the best! ANY ideas are appreciated, thank you!

Michelle answers:

Last year my husband, I and some friends attended the Finger Lakes “Deck the Halls” weekend on the Seneca Lake Wine Trail.
This year the dates are November 19-21, 2010 or December 3-5, 2010.
You begin at one winery where you receive a wreath made from grape vines and an ornament and a food pairing. After that, you visit other participating wineries where you recieve an ornament and a food pairing. You also receive a booklet with all the recipes from each of the wineries.
We live about an hour away so we attended only one day, but are thinking of doing the entire weekend this year.
You can stay at hotels in Geneva, NY or Watkins Glen, NY or at one of the many nice Bed & Breakfast along the Lake.
Info for this year’s event can be found here: http://www.senecalakewine.com/jc/content/view/127/147/
