Your Questions About Fafsa

Mandy asks…

What if my parents won’t give their financial information for FAFSA?

They won’t give the financial information for the FAFSA unless I agree to stay living with them in their house during college. But that is not in the best interest of my psychological well-being. I sincerely need to get out. I plan to live with my older sister and I already have a job. So I am wondering whether my parents’ financial information can be gathered without the help of my parents. I have heard about a data retrieval tool on the FAFSA website that links to the IRS. Will that work? Thanks!

Michelle answers:

In order to transfer your parents’ income tax info into FAFSA through the IRS data-link… You would have to know your parents’ IRS pin #

also, you would be fraudulently saying that you are, in fact, them
fraudulently indicating that you are one of your parents is something I can’t recommend

what will happen if your parents find out that you logged into the IRS website as one of them?

Perhaps your sister can help you negotiate with your parents

you can indicate that your parents will not provide you the information & with that you are still completing your FAFSA & will be offered student loans

if your parent’s combined income isn’t very low (poverty level), then it is likely you would only be offered student loans anyway

Charles asks…

How long after completing the fafsa do you receive financial aid?

I completed my fafsa sometime last week. I checked today and they still haven’t updated my financial aid status at my school. My classes start October 15th and I am starting to worry that I may not be getting my financial aid in time. How long does it usually take? Also, I tried calling the financial aid advisor but it always goes to voicemail which says, “expect a return call between 24-48hrs.” Still no call :/

Michelle answers:

You filed insanely late. Insanely.

FAFSA should be completed between January and March to have everything done on time. You will not get anything on time, if at all for this current semester/quarter. FAFSA will take at least 2 months for the paperwork to all be completed and an award determined.

Betty asks…

What all do I need in order to fill out a FAFSA form?

I’m going tomorrow to meet with someone who will help me fill out a FAFSA for free. I need to know which documentation I need to take.
I was in school for awhile, but never applied for financial aid because I had received a full ride scholarship. Now after being out of school for a couple years, I’m planning on going back next fall.

Michelle answers:

You can fill it out yourself. The questions are plain and simple to answer. You can estimate your income or use your W-2 if you have one. Http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

Donna asks…

When do you know how much your going to get after filling out your FAFSA? How long does it take?

I completed my FAFSA and I’m doing No worker left behind so I can start school in January. I want to start school in January, but I don’t know anyone who’s received either.

Michelle answers:

Did you fill out your FAFSA by mail or online? If you filled it out online, then you will get an email, usually within a few days, letting you know if you are approved or not. If you did so by mail, it will take longer. As for how much you will get, that will have to be checked out through your school. Because books, tuitions, and other fees vary from school to school, the school determines the exact amount all the FAFSA will show you is whether you are approved or not. Go to www.fafsa.org. They may have whether you are excepted or not listed. Good luck with school. I know as a returning, older 🙂 student it is a little scary at first, but I have had the best time meeting people and learning. I never thought that possible! Lol!!! Best wishes!
