Why do some cultures/religions consider women dirty when they menstruate?
Why is it that some cultures / religions find women to be unclean when they are on their periods? Some religions such as Islam don’t allow women to touch the holy books when they are menstruating. But why is this? It surely must be seen as one of the most natural things things to happen to a woman’s body along with pregnancy and child birth so I am sure God wouldn’t consider women to be dirty during this time…. So why do some people consider it to be a dirty thing?
Michelle answers:
I always wondered this too….and I did a bit of research on it. The thing is that Western culture has very little understanding of some of these ancient customs…and much of the truth has been bent and distorted by time and ignorance….older cultures believed that women were ruled by the Moon (and even now in the Western world many women’s periods are timed by the Moons cycles) ….these cultures also believed that when a woman was on her period, she was very powerful….this is partly because they did not fully understand how a woman could bleed that much without dying and partly because they believed the Moon to be magical and so the woman would have some of that power within her. So, when her period arrived, the woman would go to a separate tent or hut….so as not to ruin the days hunting….and so she could be peaceful and alone at a time of physical pain or discomfort…our modern society has twisted this into women being segregated because they are dirty when they bleed.

William asks…
What does it mean if your tubes are blocked?
My husband and I decided about 18 mnths ago that we felt ready to try to get pregnant. We wanted it to be natural though so didn’t rush into anything, instead we just carried on as normal but without protection (didn’t go by timings or anything).
About 6 months ago we decided that we should try to hurry things along so I started keeping track of dates etc using a pregnancy book but still nothing has hapenned.
I talked to my mum about it and she said she had a similar thing when she was trying for the first time and that she had to have her falopian tubes unblocked then she got pregnant.
I’m thinking of going to the doctor soon but was wondering if anybody knows what this means?
Why are they blocked (if they are)?
Is it easy enough to fix?
How do they do it?
Is it related to PCOS (my sister has PCOS but still managed to have 3 kids)?
Thanks for all the advice so far, very helpfull. Quite scary but I’ll get down the doctors sharpish.
I don’t think its my husband as although he hasn’t been tested recently (I know, things change) he has a 6yr old from a previous relationship.
Michelle answers:
If they are blocked tissue can be in the way so they will go i through your lower abdomen and unblock them by laparoscopy surgery u can go home the same day it isn’t related to pcos they will give u an hsg first to see if u r blocked good luck!

37 weeks with 3rd baby and having very painful thigh cramps ?
This is my 3rd pregnancy and I have never had these kind of cramps before. I am booked in for a c-section on 24th september as I am unable to risk a natural birth due to 2 previous emergency sections. Is this some indication of labour ? The cramps are very painful, stop me in my tracks, but very quick, they only last a few seconds.
Michelle answers:
I had something similar in my 2nd pregnancy but it was earlier on. I went to hospital but they seemed to think it was probably ligaments.
It went away eventually and nothing seemed to happen because of it.
I dont know if its the same as you but sounds like it.
Sorry cant tell you any more.

My answers:
How old are you?
— I’m 21.
How old is the baby’s father?
— He’s 22, soon to be 23.
Are you and the baby’s father still together?
— Yes, we’re engaged.
What was your first symptom?
— Looking back, it was constant fatigue, dizziness and slight nausea. I just thought I had a bad cold or something.
When did you find out you’re pregnant?
— February 1st at 3 in the morning.
How did you feel when you found out?
— I was in shock. It wasn’t a planned pregnancy, I was on birth control. I pretty much cried my eyes out.
How did the baby’s dad react?
— He was a lot more calm than I was, and he handled it better than I expected. He just told me we were going to be ok and not to worry.
What is your due date? How far along are you?
— I’m due October 8th. I’ll be 31 weeks tomorrow.
Do you know what you’re having? If so, is it a boy or girl?
— We’re having a little girl! =)
Are you happy with what you are having?
— Oh yes, I’m ecstatic!
Who is going to be with you when you deliver?
— Just my fiance.
Natural or medicated?
— I really want to have a natural birth.
Will you cry when you hold your baby for the first time?
— Definitely. I get teary-eyed just thinking about it.
Are you scared about the labor?
— I’m actually more excited than scared. That might change though…
Do you have a name picked out?
— Yes.
Is your baby going to be named after someone?
— She will have the same middle name as me.
What is the baby’s room theme?
— She is going to be in our room for the first 6 months, so she won’t really have a themed room then. When she does get her own room, it’ll be a girly safari theme with pastel colored animals.
What was the first thing you bought for the baby?
— Before we knew what we’re having, we bought a couple gender neutral outfits. When we found out we’re having a girl, we went out and bought pink outfits. Now we have quite a lot of stuff for her.
Are you ready to be a mommy?
— I think I’m as ready as possible. I’ve been reading a lot of baby books and I’ve gone to a couple parenting classes.
Michelle answers:
I’m 20, he’s 24, yup, we’re still together.
I knew right away when it happened that i was pregnant, just intuition. I was a day late for my period when i took a test. We found out four weeks ago, whenever that was, and i waited until the boyfriend got off work to test. I had known, but the positive result scared the crap out of me, and i cried for like two days solid. I made tony look at the results because i was too scared. He just looked at the test, looked back at me, then down at the test and back at me and said, “i have no idea what the hell this means.” lol then i saw the results, started crying, and he gave me a big hug and told me it was gonna be ok.
I’m due march 17, currently 8 weeks along. No idea what we’re having. We want a boy, but i’ll be happy as long as we have a healthy baby 🙂
just me and daddy in the delivery room, and i’m going completely natural, with no medical intervention unless absolutely necessary. I’m really excited about it, but also a little scared. I know i’m going to cry my eyes out. I cry every time i watch a childbirth video.
We have a girl’s name picked out (Roslyn Marie), but the boy’s name still eludes us. Our daughter will be named after me (same middle name) and daddy wants our son to be named after his grandfather (Dale).
Baby’s room is going to be a soft, calming sea green. I want it to have a calm, soothing oceanic theme. We haven’t bought anything yet, but a friend of ours gave us two bibs, one says ‘i love mommy’ and the other says ‘i love daddy’.
I am so ready to be a mom. I feel like i have a lot of things to teach our child, and can’t wait to meet him/her! I love my little sweetheart already!
