Joseph asks…
Can you use ovulation strips to avoid pregnancy?
I am Catholic and according to Catholic doctrine, artificial contraceptives are wrong. Natural Family Planning is the only option, so women need to learn to figure out when they’re most fertile.
I was wondering, are products like ovulation strips, or the Ov-Watch useful to PREVENT pregnancy???
Thanks! 🙂
And for the record I’m NOT having sex. I’m just curious for future reference.
And please be respectful of my religious beliefs. I will only be having sex when I’m married and ready, so you don’t need to worry about me having an unwanted child.
Sorry, I have to keep adding details, lol. I know a lot of people use contraceptives but I personally think that they are wrong. And I know for a fact that if used properly, NFP is 95-97% effective. I just want to know if I can use strips to make it even MORE effective.

Michelle answers:
It’s possible, but not recommended. The reason is this. When women prepare to ovulate they have what is called an LH surge. This is what the ovulation sticks measure, not actual ovulation. Once you get a positive stick it means you should ovulate within the next 24-48 hours. The problem is this. Women can have an LH surge but not ovulate. So she may have sex later in the month only to find that she ovulated late and is pregnant. I would suggest looking into Basal Body Temping. If you use the charting, you can tell when you’ve ovulated. You could also use the ovulation stick to help serve as a warning that ovulation is coming soon. It can help better determine your ‘safe’ days. Good luck and I hope that helped! 🙂

Michael asks…
Losing wieght during pregnancy?
I am just curious to see if anyone knows the pro’s and con’s to losing weight during pregnany. A few facts about me:
I went to a physical therapyst and recieved me stats. I am five foot three, I am 30% body fat, 32% body water. I am 205 pounds, and according to my BMI I should be around 118 pounds. Thats almost 100 pounds to lose. I disagree with that number, but maybe you can help. As it is clear that my fat amount is not as high as most would think for someone 205 pounds. I carry the weight pretty evenly throughout my body, my stomache is a little more than the rest but I am overall very proportionate. I have been trying to concieve and would like to continue to lose weight. I have lost a total or 35 pounds in just the past 5 months. Which is a healthy rate to lose it. I do not want to gain weight from the pregnancy, if in fact I am or become pregnant soon, and I would also like to continue to lose it. I do know that too much excersize and dieting can be very bad for pregnant women. But I have thought about this and was thinking that walking for about 45 mins a day and doing some arm weights (5-7 pounds) for a few reps a day, and some leg lifts could help me in toning my body and as a result slimming down. I do know that my stomache will only get bigger from pregnancy but if I would lose and gain at the same time i would likely reduce that fat, and just gain normal size from the babys growth, right? Does anyone know a good method or excersize routine that could help me achieve my goals? This is an important part of my life and would love some help. Another fact is that I do eat fairly healthy. I eat whole grain breads, fruits with only natural sugars, some veggies (mostly broccoli) and only eat grilled chicken, and 97% lean turkey meat. I do not eat steaks or burgers or anything that is not chicken or lean turkey meat (you honestly can not tell the difference between turkey products vs beef products) I eat foods with 8g or less of sugar and watch calories. Dont get me wrong I do have the occasional day that I cheat on my diet a little, but I maintain it for the most part. I would like to see results and lead a healthy pregnancy as well as a healthy life style. Any advice????
Michelle answers:
It’s perfectly okay to continue to lose weight, within REASON, in your early pregnancy. The most critical thing is to advise your OBGYN and go over your meal plan and exercise regimen. Your doctor will advise you from there as to whether you can continue as is or if some tweaking is needed. Just don’t keep losing weight on your own (when you get pregnant). With your doctor’s guidance, you can still continue to make progress.

Actually these days unless the package specifically says that if you are breastfeeding or expecting do not use then you can use just about any kind of lotions and body washes. I don’t think there has ever been a problem besides you may become more sensitive to it during pregnancy.

Mandy asks…
Can we ask world governments to legislate and/or ban pregnancy and childbirth for a few generations??
Two years ago (or thereabouts), the World Health Organization released a study which stated that, in order to sustain human life and consumption over the next twenty years, we would require THREE PLANET EARTHS!! Just today it was estimated that the United States alone has surpassed the 300 MILLION MARK in population!! It is conceivable, and highly likely that greed and hunger and global conflict will be a natural result of such a catastrophic scenario–we have been seeing the initial shortages for quite a while now, chiefly with petroleum and gasoline products! Shouldn’t we start acting NOW to prepare for those inevitable outcomes??! Why are we choosing to ignore the issue, instead of facing it head-on! I don’t know if banning childbirth is the answer, but isn’t it incumbent on us to AT LEAST DO SOMETHING??!!
Michelle answers:
You are right, of course, but legislation is not a possibility in today’s world, neither is forced semi sterilization of every human on earth.
The only way is education and changing of customs.
Population explosion stopped in 2 places on earth – Europe, where population is dropping through social customs, and Africa where Aids kills so many.
The European option is not relevant to 3rd world countries, and Aids is too painful.
