Your Questions About Natural Pregnancy Remedies

Donald asks…

Probiotics and Pregnancy? Are they safe?

Hi, I was wondering if it’s safe to take probiotics during pregnancy? I have a bottle of capsules that contain:
L. Rhamnosus
L Casei
L Acidophilus
B Longum
I actually drink acidohpilus milk and did during my first pregnancy and had no issues with it. I did some research online and it looks safe to take to me but when I asked the Dr. they said that they don’t have enough information on if it harms the fetus or not. I know some herbs and things can harm a fetus but sometimes it seems like drs of all kinds just want you to steer away from the “Naturalremedies. Does anyone have any insight?
The Dr. advised that I shouldn’t take them. Yet my research looks like it would be beneficial.?

Michelle answers:

It’s your decision. I usually follow the advice of my doctor because I didn’t attend medical school and therefore can safely assume that he knows a little more than I do.
I don’t know where you are doing your research but if it’s online, you should keep in mind that anyone can post anything and a lot of websites contain inaccurate information. Best of luck to you.

Hi jkzimm04

Dr. Sears says it’s safe:
http://www.parenting.com/article/Pregnancy/Health/Ask-Dr.-Sears-Probiotics-During-Pregnancy

I found several studies that found that it was safe and beneficial. That is to say that the ones tested were safe and beneficial and doesn’t necessarily extend to every brand of every type of probiotic.

Your doctor will have numerous reasons for steering you away from supplements you want to take, including but not limited to: concerns about malpractice, not enough time or inclination to explore the issue thoroughly, ignorance and prejudice. In cases like this you may just have to accept full responsibility and decide for yourself.

While we’re on the subject of prenatal supplements, you may be interested in the latest on Vitamin D supplementation. Vitamin D3 is often deficient and is now known to reduce the risk of type I diabetes, asthma, MS, dental and bone problems, leukemia, schizophrenia and possibly autism, among other things.

Natural Antidepressants During Pregnancy?

I am in need of help. I am pregnant in my 2nd Trimester and have felt considerable depression during my pregnancy. Symptoms include: Lethargic, unable to get out of bed, no desire to socialize or participate in family activities, loss of desire to complete daily tasks. I have two other children ages 7 and 2yrs old and my depression is becoming burdensome and a distracting me from caring for my other children. I am experiencing intense sadness and loss of interest in daily endeavors. These symptoms are very different than normal pregnancy hormone related symptoms as they are more intense and dark in nature. I have discussed with my doctor but I do not want to take prescription medications and would like to consider all natural antidepressants. I have heard that Sam-E is supposedly good, however I want to make sure that any natural antidepressants I may take will not have harmful side effects on the baby while I am pregnant.

Question:
Are there any SAFE all natural Antidepressant remedies available to take during pregnancy?

Thank you for your help.

Michelle answers:

Many doctors are only trained to prescribe various types, and strengths of antidepressants, and counselling. If the depression proves to be resistant, their next approach is to recommend ECT, with its 1 in 50,000 risk of death, and the possibility of permanent, partial memory loss. Talk therapy isn’t very effective, when there is a medical cause, such as nutritional deficiencies, There are many other things you can do to help treat your depression. Moderate exercise for at least 20 – 30 minutes, daily, and up to an hour. Brisk walking is good, and try to be mindful of the feeling your foot makes as it hits the ground: it is a relaxation technique. Also use daily, one of the relaxation methods in sections 2, 2.c, 2.i, or 11, and/or yoga, Tai Chi, and/or the EFT, in sections 2.q, 2.o, and section 53, at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris whichever works best for you.

Screening quizzes for depression are via page E, in section 1, or page J, in section 2. If positive, print, and consult a doctor, to eliminate medical causes, and ask for an appropriate referral. Take 4 Omega 3 fish oil supplements, daily: (certified free of mercury) it is best if consumed with an antioxidant, such as an orange, or grapefruit, or their FRESHLY SQUEEZED juice. If vitamin E is added, it should be certified as being 100% from natural sources, or it may be synthetic: avoid it. Also take a vitamin B complex which is certified as being 100% of natural origin; a deficiency in vitamin B9 (folic acid, or folate) is known to cause depression. Around 30% – 40% of depressed people have low vitamin B12 levels. Depressed females using the contraceptive pill may benefit from vitamin B6 supplements. Occupational therapy (keeping busy allows little time for unproductive introspection, and keeps mental activity out of less desirable areas of the brain).

As options, if desired, either a known, effective herbal remedy, such as St. John’s wort, (a German variety, if possible; local ones may vary in efficacy; take with a meal) or supplements, such as SAMe, Inositol, or 5HTP (from vitamin and health food stores, some supermarkets, or mail order: view section 55 at ezy-build ). Initially, at least, some form of counselling, preferably either Cognitive Behavio(u)ral Therapy, or Rational Emotive Behavio(u)ral Therapy. Co-counselling is shown in the first 3 pages of section 2, or online therapy, or even talking with someone you feel comfortable with, and a much more detailed post is on page R. For females, also view page V: “women to women”, and if young; young women’s depression. Eventually, read the section.
