Your Questions About Natural Remedies In Pregnancy

Thomas asks…

Echinacea in pregnancy?

hey
i suffer from severe colds and chesty viruses when im pregnant and want to take echinacea. im wondering whether anyone has had any adverse effects, reactions or experiences from taking this herb in pregnancy. My midwife has told me not to take any vitamins or supplements in pregnancy apart from iron but i dont agree with this. Im a mother and a midwife and personally find oral iron very irritating to my digestive system and much prefer to take the natural remedy spatone which does just as well and is far kinder to the body. Im just wondering what others experiences are of natural remedies and what they have been told. Obviously there are some that are dangerous in pregnancy and women should steer clear of vitamin A supplements when pregnant but I think that it is a bit extreme and maybe even causing more harm than good in some cases to say that all supplements and natural remedies are out??

Michelle answers:

This is the warning I found:
Do not take echinacea without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant. It is not known whether echinacea will harm an unborn baby.

Call your local pharmacists or get a second opinion.

James asks…

early pregnancy….???urine infection?

Has anyone experienced urine infection in early pregnancy??if so…whats the cause of this??is ther any natural remedies other then…cranberry juice??

Michelle answers:

UTIs are very common. I am 24 weeks pregnant and had one in the very early part of my pregnancy. Its simple to treat with antibiotics… If it is TRULY an infection YOU MUST take the antibiotics as the infection could spread and it will harm your baby. Cranberry juice and lots of water has been shown to help the healing and ease discomfort.
The causes can be too much sex, not peeing before and after sex, or sometimes it just happens! Take your antibiotics, stay away from natural remedies as they haven’t been tested by the FDA and so therefore do not have to adhere to their standards. This can also harm your baby.
Hope you feel better soon!

Any natural calming remedy? or any tips please?

So I’m booked in to have a c-section tuesday, but I’m so nervous, this is my first baby, and it hasn’t been a easy pregnancy, I suffer from aniexty when I get stressed or have something on my mind, and I’m finding I’m not just worrying about my c-section now I’m worrying about EVERYTHING! I’m worrying about the c-section, the baby, everyone else I love, and its just building up, I really want to relax this weekend so I’m not so stressy tuesday, is there any tips or any natural remedies I can take just to calm me down slightly?

Michelle answers:

I just asked a question similar to this, as I’m scheduled a C section on Monday. I have Panic Disorder and am soo worried about everything. I’ve already started experiencing some uncontrollable shaking at times. I’ve tried just relaxing and having my husband give me back rubs, etc. I’m going to try getting a warm bath later and see if it helps. Also, keep your mind occupied with movies, books, or hobbies. It will help a little. I’m trying to focus on the fact that I get to meet my little boy but I totally feel your pain, as it’s hard to get over when you have anxiety anyways. Good luck and I hope all goes well!

Laura asks…

A cold in pregnancy…..?

I am 8 weeks pregnant with my second child and have the worlds worst head cold. Any ideas for natural remedies that will be safe for me and my baby? Rest is obvious….looking for something new to try. Thanks!!

Michelle answers:

Chamomile tea with honey, it is so relaxing and I used it in all 4 of my pregnancies. No it won’t cure your cold, but it will make you feel a whole lot better. Make it nice and hot. Oh, and just a little extra info, most say tylenol is okay, and it is, but I know my doctor would not let me take it until I was 12 weeks, he said there is a SLIGHT chance of complications before then.
