Your Questions About Fafsa

Thomas asks…

A Question About FAFSA and Living Situation?

What happens if you intended to live with your parents when you filed FAFSA, but then you decide to move out before the semester starts and live in an apartment? Can you just go back and change your FAFSA information and your pell grant award amount change? How WOULD it change? Do you get more money if you live on your own? (This is when FAFSA assumes you get $0.00 in assistance from parents.)

Michelle answers:

FAFSA never assumes you get $0.00 from your parents unless you meet criteria to fill out FAFSA as an independent student (for example being over 24, married, enlisted military, etc….)

living on your own… Even if you could prove you were fully self-supporting for over a year with no help from your parents, your FAFSA generated funding will not change

Carol asks…

how to write BMCC on FAFSA?

in my FAFSA application, i tried to put BMCC into my FAFSA but it they said the search was incorrect. What would be the correct way to put BMCC on the FAFSA application?

Michelle answers:

The fafsa isn’t smart enough to recognize abbreviations. I’m not even sure what school you are referring, but usually you can find the school code on the schools fin aid website.
If you are talking about Borough of Manhattan Community College, The City University of New York, here are the codes you need.

FAFSA
School Code
002691

TAP
School Code
1404

Sharon asks…

How much from fafsa?

Just wondering how much you people from the internets received from FAFSA? Thanks 😀

Michelle answers:

FAFSA does NOT pay you.. If gives u a number so that financial aid will know how much aid u are eligible for.. Depending on ur status in school and your level (freshman, etc)..u get more aid as u advance in grades.

Address change in FAFSA?

i am currently living with my grandparents for school, and i am applying for FAFSA. My parents live in a different city, but once i am done with high school i will be moving into my parents home for college. My question is for my FAFSA application, do i need to enter my grandparents address (where i live right now) or my parents address (where i will be living when i enter college). If i enter my grandparents address, will i be able to change my address afterwards? or will i have to only change my address in college? i am really confused as to what to do! please help! 🙂

Michelle answers:

The FAFSA is considered to be a snapshot of your situation on the day that you submit it, so you should use your current address at your grandparents’ home. You can change it later–and you should. To do that, you just need to log onto the FAFSA website and click on the button for making corrections. That will bring up your entire FAFSA and you can correct your address there.
