Your Questions About Fafsa

Mary asks…

What happens if you put 9/10 colleges in the FAFSA thing, but you apply to another one after you sent Fafsa?

I’m going to send in my FAFSA tonight, but I’m listing 9 colleges. But what happens if I send in my FAFSA and I apply to another university not listed on the FAFSA after I submit my FAFSA?

Michelle answers:

If you want to get a financial aid award letter from that new school, then you would need to go to the fafsa website and click “Add or Delete a school code” and add your 10th school to your fafsa. If you decide you want to go to an 11th school, you would need to delete one of the school codes before you add your 11th. Be sure you realize if you want to get a financial aid “Award Letter” from all of those schools you are going to have to apply for admission to all of them… (and be accepted). Most schools don’t issue award letters to students unless they have applied and paid for the admission application process. Also, each school will have it’s own set of fin aid paperwork for you to fill out and send back. If you are selected for verification, you will be required to turn in your tax forms and all other paperwork they ask for to ALL 10 SCHOOLS. Just so you know… You might want to narrow it down a bit to save some trees and some money.

Charles asks…

How can I pay for college when FAFSA and my parents won’t help?

I was recently married, but had to file my FAFSA with the income of my parents. Unfortunately for me, they make a decent amount of money so I only got the Stafford Loan from the government. I need to get another $3000 to pay for this semester of school but am not eligible to sign most loans by myself because my gross income is not enough. I have a good credit score, but without enough money history, I still can’t get the loan. I’ve asked my parents to cosign, but because I just got married they will not sign on anything for me. What can I do to get the money I need?

Michelle answers:

If you are married then there is no reason you should have to list your parents income. My sister was seventeen and living on her own when she applied for loans. She had to do something called declaring independent status with FAFSA so that she could afford school. I can’t tell you exactly how to do it but call them up and tell them your situation and that you are an independent person not being supported by your parents. My sister was able to get all of the money she needed. Getting school loans can get frustrating but don’t give up, call everyone until you get someone who will help you figure this out. Also, join a credit union, they are usually more helpful with giving small loans like that for school. Even if they don’t (which I don’t foresee happening) you will now be part of an institution that is known for helping people get loans at lower interest rates when you may need one later in life ie. Car, house etc. Good luck!

Chris asks…

When filling out a FAFSA, is it necessary to put a university’s FAFSA number on the application?

For example, I have gotten mail from Toledo University, who say their FAFSA number is 003131. Is it necessary to include that number into your FAFSA app? Or will any college you apply to recieve your FAFSA?

Thanks!

Michelle answers:

Only the schools you list on the fafsa will receive your financial aid information. If you just apply for admission to a school, they will not get your fafsa app. The school code has to be on the form.

Jenny asks…

Can I still apply to college without submitting a fafsa application?

Well I’ve been trying to get my fafsa form filled out but there’s just some information I can’t provide due to my mother’s financial situations. Would it be okay to still apply with the form?

Michelle answers:

Yes, you can still apply for it.

Still apply for FAFSA.. Later on
