Robert asks…

I am a 17 year old mommy.I started having contractions at 5 months and had ALOT of complications throughout my whole pregnancy.I was in labor for almost 20 hours.They broke my water when i was at 5 and i had her natural.It was one of the hardest and definitely the most painful thing I have ever done.My Beautiful daughter was born on March 25,2009.Its been hard.She has had colic,multiple ear infections,lactose intolerant,e-coli, alot of allergies and much more….
~~~I just wanted to hear the stories of other teenage mommys….natural or epidural…complications or none…colic or not….alot of health problems after or not……
Michelle answers:
I’ve found it ok, im 16, il be 17 on the 6th of January. I was 10 days overdue so they took me in to induce me with a gel. When they were putting the first gel in they told me i wasn’t dilated at all so i’d probably need 3 or 4 gels.
So i started getting minor contractions and they came round at 6 in the morning to check me and i was just 2-3cm dilated so i needed a second gel so i didn’t get the water birth i wanted :(.
By 7a.m my contractions were worse and i was put on Gas and Air which was lethal, better than drink šŸ˜‰ lol and i was ringing my mummy and boyfriend every 2 mins to hurry up because i was in so much pain. At about 10 they got me on to a rocking chair to help bring the baby’s head down and after 15 mins of rocking on that i was in so much pain and couldn’t stop sucking the gas and air so at half 10 they examined me and i was 5 cms dilated.
They told me i’d be going down to the delivery room in about an hour because there was no room for me at the moment. While they were examining me my mummy and boyfriend arrived, the midwives were running a bath for me to ease the pain and mummy was talking to someone and 5 mins after id been examined i started screaming at my mummy that i needed to push so the midwife came round and examined me again and said i was 8cms dilated and i was going down to the delivery room now.
They didn’t have time to wait on one of the carrier people to come get me because they were in that much of a rush so the midwives had to push me down.
When i got down i was in so much pain and really needed to push but they wouldn’t let me because my bladder was full and that would harm the baby’s head, but i pushed anyway, good thing i did, it emptied my bladder cause i peed myself 3 times then lol.
Then they got me onto my feet to help bring the baby’s head on down and i was leaning on my boyfriend cause i kept passing out, then i’d to lean on the bed with my boyfriend behind me so i wouldn’t fall, i duno how but i managed to take my extensions out in the middle of a contraction :L
while i was on my feet i was pushing and the midwife told me they could see the head and i needed to get onto the bed but i argued with them that i wasn’t getting in the bed i was pushing the baby out on the floor, but they told me the baby would die then because it would hit its head of the floor so i got up on to the bed on my knees so i was pushing the baby out behind me and with 2 pushes and just Gas and Air the whole way through my beautiful daughter was born at 1:30 p.m on the 3rd of December 2009.
I needed stitches duno how many tho, i didn’t wanna know, but it was because she came out with her hand up by her head and slit me then that stretched. While i was waiting to get stitched a red light started flashing and we thought it was just for midwives to come for and emergency c-section, but when my mummy was going out firemen were coming pushing past, workmen had thought they burst a water pipe but it was a bath being run for me :L
then 5 days after i was at the toilet and went to look at my stitches and there was something hanging out of me so id to go to the hospital, it was a bit of membrane, there was still a good bit in my uterus, they put me on antibiotics to see if itl pass instead of giving me an operation so i’ve to see at my 6 week checkup what the doc says.
Shes actually been a really good baby, sleeping through the night and not crying that much unless shes looking attention Lil but the last week shes been really unsettled, still sleeping at night though so we think shes got a bit of colic.
Sorry for the millions of questions lol I am doing an assignment on teenage mums, including myself. I was hoping for genuine answers to start getting ahead. Everything is confidential, and any info would be useful. Who knows could make friends out of this ^^
Michelle answers:
Hey, im 35 weeks pregnant and just turned 20. I know you asked for teenage mums but i thought id try and help out a little anyways (since i only just missed the cut off and i guess 20 is still considered young)
Good luck with your assignment, here goes…
I went to the doctors because i had a lighter period which wasn’t normal and had experienced a bloody discharge. I had googled a couple of my symptoms and suspected i was pregnant.
I was in shock when i found out, excited but stunned! Even though i had suspected it i was taken aback to hear the doctor confirm my suspicions.
I told my partner straight away and told my parents- i didn’t tell other people until 12 weeks.
Nope, i went in by myself to have the blood test done, although my boyfriend knew i was going.
I had already left school šŸ™‚
I do get strange, judge mental looks- it doesn’t help that i look younger than i am (if im wearing no makeup). People do pass judgment and tell me how young i am to have a baby, they are also not as willing to help me. (Eg i dropped some money at the supermarket and the lady just stood there looking at me knowing it wasn’t easy for me to bend down, people dont give up their seat on the train for me ect)
Im planning on going and studying externally or at night to further my education maybe next year or next semester.
I never considered abortion, im not against it but im in a stable relationship and have been with my boyfriend for two years. While it wasnt planned we both wanted it in the future. We are financially secure- own our cars, have a steady income )we are renting now but he had owned two houses previously) and i have support from my family. There was no reason for us to terminate the pregnancy.
I had two threatened miscarriages with the pregnancy and developed something which forced me on bed rest for a few weeks- scary but the baby is fine now.
Im booked into a birthing centre where the only drugs available to be administered are gas and pethidine- so no epidural. In for feting this i get an amazing room and they are much more personal.
I had morning sickness for about 5 weeks.
I havent had cravings but have gone off of a few things- chinese food, meat doesnt really appeal to me and i seem to want to eat all the things your not supposed to have when your pregnant (soft serve, deli meats, seafood ect)
Im not highly religious so that didnt concern me.
I have alot of support, ive lost a lot of friends mainly because i cant go out drinking ect which is disappointing but it makes you realise who your true friends are. My dad isnt around though.
The dad is very excited for the arrival of the baby and cant wait!
I was 19 and he was 27 when we found out.
I had depression before i got pregnant but have necver felt better, im so excited. Its daunting at the same time though. I take care of my body and have a new found respect for it.
My mum is thrilled to be a nana, she had me when she was 21 so she will be a young nana which i think is great.
We dont have any other kids, would like two more but we will be waiting until the first is atleast two before we start trying for the next. We have no immediate plans to get married- its a mutual decision. A baby is a huge commitment and we have other things we would rather do before spending thousands on a wedding. I dont want someone to marry me just because they feel its the right thing to do because im pregnant.
I dont think there is ever an ideal time to have kids- ypur always going to want something else (a better job, better car, to have travelled, more money in the bank ect) but you just have to make the most of it. Just because we are having a baby doesnt mean we have to stop doing everything we love, a baby is supposed to enrich your life not take away from it.
Richard asks…
How do I tell my friends to grow up?!?
My friends are like kindergarteners. We are in 5th grade. We were learning more about cells, organs, and pregnancy, and 2 of my friends got grossed out by the digestive system, and picture of a fetus! It was just a drawing, not real life! The fetus was a real life picture, and my friend couldn’t handle it! They are in 5th friggin grade and they are still saying, “I’m never gonna get married I’m just gonna live with my mom.” They believe in cooties. They don’t like working with girls, and one of them I’m pretty sure is gay. If we ever research something for human body science, or watching a film in science class and naked body comes up, they are grossed out and become nausious. GROW UP!!! It’s the human body!!! My friend doesn’t believe me that you have to have sex to have kids! He keeps thinking babies just form in a girls belly without sperm fertilizing the egg!!! He keeps saying he will never fall in love! Whenever I say a word like sex, they get grossed out. Grow up guys, its natural! They will never get women. I’m already interested in girls. My friend is the oldest 5th grader. I’m 11, he’s 11, and my other friend is 10. How do I get them to friggin grow up?!
Dont say get new friends cause they are my best friends
Michelle answers:
Well…I’m in 9th grade and my “friends” are like that too..there isn’t much you can do about it honestly! Maybe you’ll be lucky and within the next few years they’ll grow up, some people never grow up though. You have to just ignore them. If they really bug you then I can’t blame you at all for telling them to grow up. Sorry if this doesn’t help much. :$
Your Questions About Natural Pregnancy Test
Laura asks…
I am over week, have taken four pregnancy tests and all are showing up negative. Could I be pregnant?
I am now over a week late. I am never late; my periods are like clockwork. But, according to four pregnancy tests taken since I missed my period, I am not pregnant. I did take 2000mg of Zithromax for an infection a little over a week ago and am under a good bit of stress, but antiobiotics and stress have never affected my cycle before. I have two beautiful girls, both who were conceived the first month we tried. I also got a positive pregnancy test on both of them three to four days before I missed my period. My husband and I practice natural family planning. The hormones in birth control mess me up and the latex in condoms give me awful UTIs. Has anyone else been pregnant and received multiple negative pregnancy tests?
Michelle answers:
Did your NFP chart confirm ovulation at the regular time of your cycle? If you had illness and infection, even though they haven’t affected you in the past, you may have ovulated later than usual or even not at all. Antibiotics can definitely delay ovulation as well as confuse your NFP charting. You may have thought your cervical mucus dried up due to being post-ovulation, but that may have been due to the medicine and there might not have been any ovulation at all. Do you chart your temperatures as well? That would be a helpful cross-check at this point. But, like I said, if you had already confirmed ovulation before starting the medicine, then there are a couple of other scenarios.
First may be that yes, you are pregnant but you are not testing positive at home. Are you using first morning urine to test? I have a friend who didn’t test positive at home for over 2 weeks. Your doctor can definitely do a blood test and check for sure.
You may also have suffered from a LUFS cycle, which is a lutenized unruptured follicle cycle. The follicle gets very large but at the time of ovulation the egg does not burst out. However, the follicle still starts triggering progesterone and usually continues to produce progesterone for longer than your usual luteal (post-ovulation) phase. 18-21 days is the normal time from the LUFS to your next cycle, which is right where you are. Are you having any pain from your lower pelvis? A cyst is also possible, but if you aren’t having pain or any bloating/swelling then that is probably not as likely.
So the bottom line is, there is probably no rush on this unless it’s making you nuts. I would wait another 3-5 days and if you still haven’t gotten your period, do one last home pregnancy test and if it’s negative, contact your doctor and see if you need to come in for a blood test. Every woman has an off cycle, even a cycle with no ovulation, from time to time, so it’s not necessarily anything big to worry about. In the meantime, try to do some stress relief if you can! Hope everything resolves itself soon.
Maria asks…
How long should I wait to take a HPT after a miscarriage?
I have had one previous pregnancy that ended up fine. We were trying for our 2nd child for 9 months finally I had gotten pregnant then on 7/15/07 I had a natural miscarriage at 4 weeks along. On 7/24/07 my HCG levels were back down to 0 on August 5th I took a pregnancy test and it came out negative which I figured it would have but I haven’t gotten my period yet its been exactly 5 weeks so far I haven’t had any symptoms of getting my period and how long do you think it should take for my period to get back to normal or when should I take a HPT? Thank you all for the answers and advice and please no rude comments
Michelle answers:
I have miscarried too and you will probably not get pregnant OR have a period until you have a D&C. See, some of the placenta and other, sorry, dead cells are still in your uterous and need to be “cleaned” out. You really need to see your OB/GYN immediately. I don’t mean to scare you and you shouldn’t be, you just need to follow the next step so you can have many babies after. Hope this helps and good luck.
Robert asks…
1 Negative test & No Period?
Your Questions About The Oldest Natural Pregnancy
Mary asks…
VBAC after Csection, how long should you wait to get pregnant again?
So I had unscheduled csection little over a week ago and I just feel miserable about the whole thing, I can’t do much for myself, all I do is sleep and sit in the living room, feed the baby. Anyway I am really depressed, disappointed. Both me and my baby came out healthy and that’s the most important thing. Anyway, my question is with my next pregnancy, which I don’t plant to have for another 2 years or so, if say I get induced again, is it true I’ll have csection since I already had one? I read that if you get induced when you already went through a csection you have to have another csection. This makes me really sad and upset to be honest, because I really don’t want another csection. Also I was told if you go for VBAC my chances of having my uterus rupture is very high. This is another thing that terrifies me, and say if your uterus ruptures, can you have more children or you can’t? and can it be fixed? I plan to have more children, and I am thinking about going to a birth center but I was told if you wanna attempt a VBAC is it’s crucial you go to a hospital where they can help with emergency just in case it happens while giving birth? I am clueless since this was my first baby, I did everything I could to have a natural birth but things didn’t go my way and that frustrates me. I am helpless and crippled and I hate being dependent on others even if that’s my husband or mother… It’s only been a week and half since the birth of my baby and I hate not being able to do anything for myself, my recovery is going well but I still have a long way before I am back to my old self or able to do things like cleaning and cooking for my family. I was healthy, very active 25 year old and now I feel nothing like my old self and I don’t think I’ll feel that way ever again. I can’t even sleep on my side, I have to sleep on my back and even that when I wake up it feels as if my inside is falling out. My biggest fear is needing more csections or not being able to have more children in the future and this terrifies me… In another word c-section destroyed a dream for me. A dream of having a natural birth and I can’t get over it to be honest….
Michelle answers:
Inductions are more likely to lead to C-sections in any case. This is why if you are trying for a VBAC they don’t like to induce you unless necessary. They want your body to do most of the work to avoid a C-section.
As far as uterine rupture goes, the risk is actually very low but it also depends on the type of incision you got. I myself got a ‘bikini cut’ and the risk is low with those. But it is something the doctors and nurses will be prepared for either way since there is some risk.
I know how you feel, I really do. My son was an emergency section and the first few weeks were hell for me. I couldn’t do a lot as far as caring for him went and I hated that. We recently moved and my new doctor has given me the option of a VBAC and I’m going for it. My son will be around 2 1/2 when that time comes and I believe they like to have at least 2 years between babies if you’re going to try for a VBAC.
If this is something you wish to do with future children research it a bit. There are tons of support groups and blogs out there with women in our shoes.
John asks…
What do you think about this?
I am 20 years old and overweight. Other than that I am extremely healthy. I walk daily and eat the proper foods (meaning I follow the food pyramid guide). My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant now for two years and I have been checked three times to ensure than I can get pregnant. The doctors tell me nothing is wrong with me and I have been pregnant once before but lost the pregnancy at around 8 to 10 weeks without cause. It was a natural miss-carriage and only required an internal ultrasound rather than a D&C. I have yet to get pregnant since then. I was reading online and found that lack of vitamin D interferes with fertility do you think this could be the reason why we have not gotten pregnant? I have a vitamin d deficiency and am not taking supplements for it. At the time I was pregnant I was on the pills, but ran out a little before I miss-carried (I assume the vitamin d would have still been in my system so this, I think, is not what caused the miss-carriage).
Michelle answers:
Miscarriages that early are common. There’s no usually anything that you could do to prevent that. If you already know that you need vitamin D then you should be taking it. Take it whether you are trying to get pregnant or not. If you know you have this problem always keep an extra bottle of it around at all times so if you run out you can take the other one for a few days until you can pick up another one. As far as the food pyramid I hope you are following the current ones at http://www.mypyramid.gov/ and not the old ones. The original food pyramids are actually following the same diet guide lines they use to fatten up pigs.
Besides for the vitamin D, get an ovulation test kit to find out when you are actually fertile as well as if and when you are ovulating. Many things can effect your fertility, but first you should take take of these two things and then go from there. Chart your ovulation and cycles and if it turns out that you are only ovulating ever other month or few months then you can take that information to your doctor and go from there.
Good luck to you.
Michelle answers:
I didn’t even read all that…
It is doing the animal good, and it doesn’t hurt them. They’re sedated for a while during the surgery, and they’re given pain relievers later, which is why they’re droopy and act tired. It’s the owner’s choice. If you don’t like it, don’t do it. You’re not changing anything by posting this. By spaying a female dog, it prevents a lot of health issues, and it /saves/ the lives of future puppies. Puppies have no soul before they are born – they don’t exist. It is better for something to not exist than to suffer or experience life and then die shortly after. Most puppies born end up as either orphans or in shelters, where they are eventually put to sleep when not adopted – and mutts or bad breeding lines can result in early developmental problems and bad conformation, which later leads to severe pain for the dog and it will either die on its own or have to be put down. And by neutering male dogs, it obviously prevents puppies being born.
Guess what? My dog isn’t spayed! What about that!
My dog has excellent show and police dog lines. Her conformation is wonderful and she is built great. By breeding her, we end up with healthy puppies and we KNOW they are going to get good homes. Bad breeding can end up, as I said before, with very bad results. Most dogs out there should not be bred, for the welfare of the future puppies, and even the mom. And if someone doesn’t want to breed their dog, they have their own reasons. A lot of people don’t have the time to take care of them, clean up after them, and sell them. I see you have no idea how the real breeding business industry is – its close to a full-time job.
And for reference to others – here is a quote from one of her questions (freaking out about her dog being pregnant.) “thanks for the help! By the way, im only an 12 year old girl asking for my pregnant dog!! Hhe thanks again!!”
You’re just a kid. You don’t know everything.
Maria asks…
Just found out I’m 35 weeks pregnant?
I’m a 18 year old college student. I was on contraception for 2 years (the pill) and forgot it sometimes and obviously about 8 months ago my boyfriend got me pregnant as I’ve just found out I’m 35 weeks pregnant. He is very excited although it was a shock to us both, he says it was the best Christmas present ever but I’m still adjusting to the idea. I’ll be 35 weeks and 5 days now, found out last week when I went to my doctor complaining of stomach pains, movements in my abdomen and back ache. Funny thing is i’m not even showing apart from a little bump but I just thought I was putting on weight due to the pill! The doctor examined me and asked if I had my period recently and I told him I hadn’t had it for a while but I thought it was just the pill. He asked me to do a pregnancy test and it came up positive, he said I would be around 18 weeks after feeling around my stomach and checking the baby’s heartbeat and sent me for a scan that afternoon, I felt devastated, I’m only 18 and the first thought that popped into my mind when the test came up positive was abortion which I feel guilty about now. When I went to the hospital, I met the midwife and she told me I’m 35 weeks! Was also told I’m having a baby girl when I asked the sex. I’m very scared about labor and birth now, my midwife told me to phone her whenever I needed to ask anything as I’ve got a lot to learn for the next few weeks, also I’m going to antenatal classes starting in 2 days. I just don’t know what to do with myself, I don’t feel that I want this baby but in a way I love this baby and would do anything to protect her. I have happy moments but I have sad ones too. My family say that they will support me but they are also very shocked and trying to adjust to the idea. I want to look forward to my baby’s arrival but I’m so scared. I always said I would want a natural home birth for my first baby but I don’t know if my midwife would let me do this as I’ve found out so late in my pregnancy, I’m going to see her again tomorrow but I don’t like he idea of having my daughter in hospital. I also don’t like the idea of a stranger handing her to me, I want to be the first to hold her. Is this possible? Also, how can I look forward to motherhood? I want to be excited like my boyfriend but I’m finding it hard although I love my daughter already. Has anyone else found out about being pregnant later on in pregnancy?
Michelle answers:
Did you know there is a show I did not know I was pregnant. I found out I was pregnant when I was fours but I was TTC for three years, so I test after one day late. But my sister found out she was pregnant when she was 25 weeks. At first the doctor said she was having twins because she was alright showning but then they said it was because she was already 25 weeks along.
I like firefox MUCH better than IE but on certain occasions i would have a ff winfdow open and it shows the window error thing. i go back and it was firefox is already running or something s i cant use it…
Michelle answers:
Well sometimes i encounter the same problem hehe… Think its a bug in firefox. But its nothin to worry abt. Hold alt+tab and if theres firefox select it from the small window u gettin. If u get the error again go to task Manger and then to processes. In that u’l find firefox.exe runnin. Click that and hit end process. That will quit firefox and u can run firefox frm da desktop shortcut again.
Paul asks…
FireFoX????????
I always hear that Fire fox is better than Internet Explorer and its faster safer ect….But what are the bad things about firefox?
Michelle answers:
I really don’t know of any bad things, since it’s open source. The only complaints I have are that cut and paste could be done a little better; and it should allow shortcuts like Internet Explorer. I really don’t like bookmarks.
On the plus side of things, it allows Java and Javascript.
Microsoft tried to set the standard for both programming languages, but Sun Microsystems wouldn’t put up with any of that, so Microsoft purposely crippled all future versions of it’s browser – and as a result – Internet Explorer will no longer enable Java or JavaScript. Also, Dynamic HTML is disabled. That was supposed to be one of the next steps, in the evolution of the internet.
Microsoft and it’s monoploy have done more to cripple the internet, than all of the spammers, virus writers, adware / malware writers, software pirates, and hackers combined.
